Luan Gabriel heads for CARIFTA Games

Gabriel in training

Dominican athlete Luan Gabriel has walked away with the fastest times in both the 100-m and 200-m in the U-17 Girls’ category at the Southern Games heats in Trinidad.

The event was held last Sunday and was a special training climax for Gabriel as she heads to the 2012 CARIFTA Games.

Her slow start in the 100 meters hindered her from running below 12 seconds but this did not deter her from returning in the 200 meters to run a blistering time of

24.68 seconds. Her performance in Trinidad has qualified her for both the 100m and 200m in the Southern Games Finals scheduled for March 24th and 25th.

At the 2011 Carifta Games Gabriel won a bronze medal in the 200m U-17 girls and has her mind set on winning two gold medals at this year’s Games in Bermuda.

In order to achieve this dream, her training needs to be complimented with high intense regional meets which will aid in getting her body into competition mode.

In light of this the Aspirers Athletics Club coaching staff solicits financial support to aid in Luan’s development as she goes after the sprint double, an accomplishment never before achieved by any Dominican athlete.

Those who can offer financial support should contact the club secretary Mr. Dani Burton at 225 0279 or Head Coach Nabi Wallace at 1868 715 0443. Contribution can also be made through a direct deposit into the account name “Aspirers Athletics Club”, Account number 300020510 at the National Bank of Dominica.

I watched this young lady at the last Carifta Games in Montego Bay and was very impressed with her. She seems to have the right attitude to go along with her potential and I really believe she could be the first female world class sprinter from Dominica with the potential to excel at major international meets including the Olympics i.e. if she receives the proper guidance and financial support. As a former High School track athlete in Jamaica I saw many super talented youngsters never realize their full potential because of lack of support, poor training facilities and the inability of their parents to support them financially. Luan will need all the support she can get; she will need to be exposed regularly to high profile meets where competing against the best athletes in her age group will bring out the best in her. However, in order for her to realize her full potential she will eventually have to leave Dominica for an overseas College with a good track and field program and reputable coach. Track scholarships are awarded to outstanding Caribbean athletes all the time so this is something which the Athletic Association can explore when she is eligible. There is no reason why Dominica cannot have world class athletes such as those produced by Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago over the years. Kirani James has put Granada on the world athletic map. Europeans will hardly confuse Granada with Granada in Spain anymore. The spin off form the success of athletes like Usain Bolt is difficult to quantify.
I wish Luan all the best and although I will be cheering for Jamaica at Carifta I would be just as happy if she takes the sprint double at the games in Bermuda.

This is so good for the country, but especially for the young lady. This is a step in the right direction when so many young people are just wasting their lives in unproductive stuff. Young lady congrats. Now this being said I hope now one thinks I am blaming anyone. This is where the sports arm of our Gov’t should pitch in and embrace the young lady. Should she go on to win the gold medals in her respective events obviously she will get praises but just think of how the island’s name will be mentioned during the news casts. Can someone post a mailing address for those of us who are away and would like to assist, that is beside the bank info that was posted.
