Martin ready for action against Pakistan

Bridgetown, Barbados – New West Indies leg-spinner Anthony Martin has already given a lot of thought to how he will approach the upcoming matches against Pakistan.

The 28-year-old Policeman from Antigua is a clever operator and is planning how best to utilise his skills when he comes up against the visitors.

The lion-hearted Martin was impressive for the West Indies A Team in England last year, and was brilliant for the Leeward Islands in the WICB 50 Over Tournament, when he took a superb hat-trick and led them to a share of the title.

The WICB Selection Committee on Wednesday unveiled the Windies squad for the 1st and 2nd Digicel One Day Internationals at the Beausejour Stadium in St Lucia on April 23 and 25. First ball in both matches is 9.30 am (8.30 am Jamaica Time).

Speaking on Wednesday, Martin said: “I am overcome with joy. I am excited and really looking forward to playing against Pakistan. I believe I have it in me to make a positive contribution and also have an impact. I’m excited. I have dreamed about this day, the day when I would get the chance to represent the West Indies. For me this is the beginning and I really want to do well for West Indies and make the people proud.”

Martin added: “Playing for the West Indies is the ultimate for any cricketer in the Caribbean. I learned a lot about bowling and about the game in general in the last year, since I played for the West Indies A Team and I have been trying to learn more with every day on the cricket field. I try to put all that I learn into play when I take the field.

“I put a lot of thought into my cricket. I am the kind of cricketer who likes to ‘study’ the opposition and come up with plans of how best to approach the task at hand. I have been in the camp for a few days now and already I have been able to settle in and get used to the environment. I am really looking forward to this opportunity.”

Martin is part of the West Indies camp in Barbados as the squad gets ready for the next two months of international cricket. The camp will continue until Sunday and the team will travel to St Lucia on Monday.

Squad for 1st and 2nd Digicel ODIs: Darren Sammy (Captain), Dwayne Bravo (Vice Captain), Devendra Bishoo, Darren Bravo, Kirk Edwards, Anthony Martin, Ravi Rampaul, Kemar Roach, Andre Russell, Marlon Samuels, Lendl Simmons, Devon Smith, Devon Thomas.
