For the first time in its history, the San Sauveur Primary School Girl’s Football Team has won a football championship.

The team secured the NBD Primary Schools Girls Football Championship 2015  title on Tuesday.

The team won its first victory, 2-1, over Woodfordhill Primary in the semi-final round and went on to defeat the Petite Savanne Primary in the final game, 3-1.

The semi-final and final round of the competition took place on Tuesday 21st April, 2015 at the Castle Bruce playing field.

Coach of the team, Shane Seraphine, said all the players worked hard to secure the victory.

“It was a great feeling knowing that we won the championship but it was also a lot of hard work,” he said. “The girls worked hard throughout the season and it only shows that hard work pays off because even in the finals, we were down one love when the game started, but they had to fight back in the second half and they came three goals to overcome and got the victory.”

Seraphine added that the team “really wanted” the win and fought hard for it.

The victory is the first for football in general at the school but Seraphine is hopeful that it is the first of many.

“Most of the players will be leaving us this year and going to high school, so next year and the years to come, we will be going back to the basics and we will be looking for a completely different team, a younger set of players and hope that they can train as hard and rise to the level of these who are leaving us,” he said. “So we really need to get the younger players on board.”

The elated Coach said it was evident that the team put into practice what they learnt during training.

“This year was our best shot and we went all the way, but they have been training together for three years now, so it was a lot of preparation,” he said.

Kamina Scott, the Team Captain, scored all three goals to take home the title.

Congratulations to the San Sauver girls and their coach. Gone are the days when football championships were almost always won by teams around Roseau and the suburbs.
