Dominican, Shane Shillingford, has been named among the 13-man Windies squad to tackle Zimbabwe in the 1st Test match at Kensington Oval in Barbados.

The announcement was made by WICB on Friday.

The match will be played from Tuesday, March 12 to Saturday March 16.

Many were caught by surprise when Shillingford was not featured on the team after he created history at the Windsor Park on Thursday, April 26, 2012 when he became the first West Indies spinner in 46 years to bag ten wickets in a Test match.

The feat was never achieved on home soil before and it occurred during the final Windies Digicel Test against Australia.

The first West Indian spinner to haul ten wickets in a Test match was Lance Gibbs in England back in 1966.

It appears that Shillingford has caught the attention of the Windies selectors during the ongoing Regional Four Day Tournament where he has so far taken 24 wickets.

West Indies and Zimbabwe will also clash at Windsor Park Sports Stadium on March 20th-24th during the second Test.

I am very happy that Shane Shillingford has been recalled to the WestIndies team. I hope that he will play in Barbados and perform creditably.I thought he deserved an earlier opportunity against the Ausies but it wasn’t to be.That is life, he just has to make good use of this opportunities. All the best Shane make your country proud.

They have to perform excellently and even then they are overlooked. You know, when they’re from a small island, they tend to overlook them and also to discriminate against them. What else is new? We know this is true.

Shane you need at least 10 (ten) wickets in the first test match to impress the selectors. When the 1st test is over, you need another 10 (ten)wickets in Dominica, to further impress them.
With that you will go on tour for sure. Nothing more nothing less Shane. Narine had a hell of a bad tour of Bangladesh. He took just 3 (three ) wickets for 300+ runs in just 2 test matches. Test cricket is your strength. You did it against Watson,Warner,Cowan,Clarke, etc.DO IT AGAIN SHANE. They BAS OO DEE NARINE with KOOL PLANCHE in Bangladesh. Don’t let it happen to you, because you know what it will mean for you. SO YOU KNOW WHERE YOU STAND BETTER THAN US.
Go For it Shane! I still consider you to be the VERY BEST finger spinner in the Caribbean,no matter what they say.

I thought 11 players take the field, so if the line up is 13 then he is a step-knee and he may not get playing time.

Grow up fellow Dominicans let the man play his game in peace and just support him, good luck Shane and do your best make us proud

I am happy for shane and any player who get selected, on merit, but there seems to be a partern where the selectors including a player to attract big crowd when a match is being played on their home ground cause the second test match will be in Dominica, just look at what happened to Shillingford last year against Australia, he performed very well and was left out of the team, untill now. Am i the only one seeing that game by the selectors? Anyway hope Shillingford makes it difficult for them to drop him in the furture. Shilly go and perform with bat and ball and prove you belong, good luck I will be watching.

This is just the point I was making. Am not sure why it is that because Shane is a Dominican people can’t or should not be objective. The culture you described by the WICB is very obvious. As for the persons talking about stats, if we go that way maybe we should also include Benn, Miller, Bishoo. The fact is Cricket is a business, and Boards are interested in making money end of story!

Zimbabwe is an easy target and gaurantee victory for West Indies. Like it or not Shane’s presence on the team is just that a presence. In the Caribbean it may not matter if he plays or not, but out there Narine is a better sell to the paying public and he will get the nod over Shane, because frankly Shane’s stats are not all that when compared to Narine!

When last you visited the “cricinfo” website? You will swallow your tongue when you go there, leave out ODI and T20 bcuz Shane has never been given the opportunity to play in these versions of the game.

      March 8, 2013

You don’t know what you are talking about. In ODI Narine is the better one. That’s not Shane’s strength. I WON’T ARGUE THAT AT ALL………However Shane is a good enough test bowler and he needs to play more test cricket. He has played 8 tests 29 wickets Average 49.79 Economy rate 2.63…….High average!
Narine 5 tests 15 wickets Average 48.06 Economy rate 3.3 High average!
Both bowlers need to bring down their average.
Narine is younger, and this is significant. However Shane is not at all bad.

      March 8, 2013

@Jagots – What utter rubbish you talking about Shane’s stats not all that when compared to Narine? You should start watching cricket with your eyes open and cease from speaking fables.

Narine in just five test matches has a worst bowling average than Shillingford’s average in 8 test matches.

We are currently unable to compare Shillingford and Narine in ODI or T20 cricket because Shillingford is yet to play ODI or T20 cricket for the Windies whereas Narine has.

Shane, don’t rejoice yet. We are only playing against Zim. You have to perform consistently all the time to guarantee your pick on the team. They will play musical chairs between you, Narine and Permaul. That is how they treat spinner on that team.

because is dominica they playing they add him for a crowd…..i mean they will still get a crowd but soon they live dominica they dont need him again…so they pressing small island people

The WICB does not make money depending on “croud”. Most of their money is made from TV rights. because the stadium was filled in Dca for the WI vs AUS game and empty in ANU for the ZIM vs WI game does not mean that the WICB did not make money. besides, a very large proportion of perons who turn out at these games get complimentary/concessionary tickets anyway. If the WICB was depending on gate fees they would have filed for bancruptsy a long time ago!
