The Sports Division in the Ministry of Culture,Youth and Sports is undertaking major resurfacing works at the Benjamin’s Park Hard Courts in Portsmouth.
The resurfacing works are part of the Division’s preparatory work for Dominica’s hosting of the 2011 Windward Islands Schools Games (WISG) from July 24 to 31.
The hard court project is undertaken by staff of the Division with assistance from a Portsmouth contractor and his staff.
The Sports Division ordered the special material for the surface from the United States which was transported to Dominica with help from Tropical Shipping.
The 2011 WISG will see participation from students athletes from Grenada, St.Lucia, St.Vincent and host country Dominica in basketball, football, netball, track and field, and volleyball. The teams will be housed in Portsmouth and the sporting events are expected to take place at the Windsor Park, Grandbay, and Portsmouth, with the Benjamins Park being the main venue for the court events.
The resurfacing works became necessary given the levels of deterioration of the existing surface and the fact that the hard court is heavily used both by locals and nationally as a multi-use facility.
The Division is pleased to have undertaken the project and is happy with the level of cooperation received from the community.
Sports Division looks forward to the support of the Dominican public during it’s hosting of the 2011 CBN WINLOTO Windward Islands School Games.
last minute dot com? How long has the event been slated, and only now… still it’s all good PR
even if it was long over due am happy to see that its being done now..better late than never right?..good work guys
I am looking at the backdrop of the Benjamin’s park and I’m thinking – What a waste. The town of Portsmouth has so much underutilized flat land. The sugar loaf estate, Baron estate, the Garraway estate, point Round area have so much potential. It is amazing but sad. Maybe it is time the Town council start taxing these land owners so much so that they are forced to sell and or develop these underutilized areas.
Good work!! Hope everthing works out well and that the court will be used to its fullest potential.
