Third Annual District Sports Festival coming

The 3rd Annual District Sports Festival which is organized by the Sports Division in the Ministry of Culture, youth and Sports will commence on Saturday May 26, 2012.

The eight festivals which are to take place in the eight districts of Dominica is an annual event which sees villages within their respective districts competing in cricket, basketball, Football, Netball, Volleyball, Rounders and Track and Field.

These activities are held in a fun filled environment and are geared towards developing a greater awareness of sports participation and hence rejuvenating community sports.

The festival was seen as a strategy by the Sports Division to develop sporting structures at the village level, and the Division is please to report a level of success in that regard. A number of village and sports district committees have been formed in recent times and the process at ensuring that others are formed are ongoing.

The first festival for 2012 will be held in the North East District at Marigot on Saturday and Sunday, May 26 and 27. The court events will be held on May 26 at the Wills Strathmore Steven Primary hard court while the field events will be held on Sunday 27 at the Lio Park. Teams representing the villages of Marigot, Wesley, Woodford hill, Calibishie. Atkinson, Concord and Belles are expected to be part of this festival.

Following the staging of the eight festivals the top village from each district will compete in the final on November 18, 2012 to determine the top sporting village for 2012, this community will be awarded at the 2013 National Sports Awards carded for May 1, 2013. Goodwill received the top award for 2011.

The second District Sports Festival will be held in the South East district at Delices on June 3, 2012; villages from Grand Fond to Delices are expected to compete on that day.

    Oh …. Information has just reached me that Delices ( Fond Thomas)has been identified as the venue for the festival….Guest Great minds think alike …..

    Way to go Sports Division. You guys with the initiative of ur head the Sports Coordinator. Hope its gonna be well organised by the sports officers so that it can be of success. To hmm, lets hope something can be arranged for u all to have your activities.

    there is no playing facility in the south east now…don t know where they will on the 3 june

      There are more than enough playing facilities in the south east…… Delices for example has a playing field and a hardcourt within close proximity of each other… That might Just be a good venue to have it and take it away from la Plaine for once … (Just a thought)…..hmmm

        lol……only reason it is being held in delices is because our playing field in la plaine is being renovated………….don’t hate because we have better facilities than u guys :-D
