Details are now emerging that a total of three Australians were attacked in Dominica during the just concluded Test between the West Indies and Australia at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium.

On Saturday evening DNO broke the news that a media person was attacked and robbed on Old Street. He has been identified as Daniel Brettig, a correspondent for ESPNCricinfo. The incident prompted the Australian team manager, Gavin Dovey to remind players to take extra care when leaving their hotel in Roseau, according Australian media reports.

DNO also reported on Saturday night that another Australian travelling with a group of cricket fans reported being mugged in Roseau.

There are reports in the Australian media that on Friday evening (June 5) an employee with the series’ television broadcaster, Ten Sports, “was also set upon” in Roseau.

Brettig told the Australian media that he was attacked by two men armed with knives and thrown to the ground minutes after he withdrew some money at an ATM.

“They approached me in a manner that suggested I was going to get hurt so I turned to run,” Brettig said according to a report in the Sydney Morning Herald. “They caught up to me pretty quickly, grabbed me and slammed me on the ground nose first. They emptied my pockets, took my phones, took my wallet. They had knives and I had a tear in one of my pockets like it was from a knife.”

He was taken to hospital with a bloody nose and cuts to the head. DNO reported that EC$300 was also stolen from him.

Brettig also told the Sydney Morning Herald that he did not want the incident to color his view of the island where the Australians otherwise felt welcome.

“I’m going to try really hard, and I am trying really hard, not to let it change my opinion of the place because I love this place. I was here in 2012 [for the previous Australian series against the West Indies],” he said. “The only thing that it will change about me is that there is no way I’m going to walk around on my own at night pretty much anywhere on a cricket tour any more.”

The Australians head to Jamaica on Monday for the second Test in the series.

It is so unfortunate and shameful that visitors to our beautiful country are no longer left to enjoy the beauty of the country and its people. In the past, we could promote Dominica as a place where these ugly incidents would never happen. Over the past few years, they have become all to prevalent. Bob Marley sings “I do want no Peace, give me equal Rights and Justice”. King Short Shirt sings “Uneasy rests the Head that wears the Crown.” Those who have in Dominica can be considered the ones who are wearing the Economic Crown of the country. It must to be understood that the growing numbers of uneducated and economically deprived will not make it easy for those who have to enjoy it. There has to be a change in the economic order and only Political change will bring that about. Those who have and are capable of seeing the truth better become engaged now, before it is too late. Where there is Equal Rights and Justice, there is Peace.

It is not unfair to assume that of every nation, about 10% are idiots. Dominica has thus about 7.000 idiots. The remaining 63.000 are hard working decent people, nice and compassionate. My friend and I came to meet three of the idiots on Cork Street, when I was visiting Roseau in December 2013. I had had friendly relations with everyone, until one night I was followed and attacked. I managed to punch one of the attackers and run, but with bleeding cut and had to seek medical attention at PMH, X-ray and stitches. I forgave the whole nation after my stay at the PMH. I was cared for, given home-cooked food, other patients’ relatives spent time talking to me and worrying about me being all-alone. Everyone was very apologetic about what had happened, on behalf of the Dominican nation. like that can happen in every town and city around the world. In the most brutal environment you are killed and then robbed. Luckily the thugs and robbers in Roseau are quite reasonable. :)

Mr. Brettig, I am so sorry about this experience. It must have been frightening to be handled by two persons armed with knives. I hope that this will certainly not dampen memories of this beautiful gem and the love of the people. I was totally sadenned when I heard. It is vexing to know that our tourist are treated that way, when the majority of the people here are friendly and always willing to help a touris.

Best wishes to you and do come back. We will take much better car of you and the rest of the team.
Our streets will be much safer and lighteed up, where no corners will be dark and scary to approach.

All these criminal acts are motivated and instigated by a bunch of desperate losers who will do anything to disrupt and give the country a bad name. A word of caution because at the end of it all when the bell rings it will be 17000 against 25000. Some(like Arthie)must be careful what they are asking for. Slow waters run deep!

With the smallest taste of development we Dominicans are starting to show our bad ways. Build a stadium for we Dominicans so we can take some sports tourists dollars but a few of us Dominicans took it literal. And yet again in an ironic twist such horrible situation seems to make some of us day as it presents another opportunity to take some political shots… another day in DA

Well, we did it again, Dominicans like the reputation of being first in everything, when in reality we are behind in everything.

Nevertheless, this time we are absolutely the first. I challenge any historian, or any other person in Dominica to point out any place on earth where cricket is played, that members of a visiting team, and the International Press which covered the game was ever attacked and robbed!

I doubt any Dominica cricket historian, or any statistician can name one place in the Caribbean, England Australia, South Africa, India, Pakistan, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, or any other place on this planet where cricket is played that such a disgraceful event took place. Our people are so ignorant they talk tourism, not understanding the visiting cricketers to our island are tourists.

If these criminals are not caught and brought to justice, this incident may cause the International cricket players to boycott Dominica in the future. Then again, a nation government which…

    • Francisco Telemaque
      June 8, 2015

Then again, a nation government which prides itself on begging and handouts encourages that sort of behavior, the government help breads the criminals in our country.

In Dominica the government focus is not on providing jobs, the focus is to have people go to Skerrit, and beg for food, and money; that gives him the opportunity to shove his hands into a draw, pulls out a few measly dollars and hand to the hungry beggar as if he is a god!

I was informed that a poor person recently received two hundred dollars in an envelope which reads ” from the prime minister.” People should be questioning where is Skerrit getting all of this personal money from in order to maintain some sort of welfare service! If the money did not come from an official and legal government welfare service, where is the origination of the money?

  12. KID ON THE BLOCK

Every Dominican who resides in Dominica knows who the desperate trouble makers are they will do anything regardless the cost and consequences to put the blame on one man- Skerrit and his Government…Shame..Shame..Shame…What a conspiracy! Desperate people will do desperate things!…Shame…Shame….Shame!

    • Francisco Telemaque
      June 8, 2015

Facts, who else to be blamed except Skerrit?

The man is the head of the country, he has not attract not one single viable foreign investor into the country, in almost twenty years of holding the title of prime minister!

All he dose is talk fart about hotels. Who the hell is going to invest into hotels in Dominica to depend on tourism to survive, when Dominica does not have an International Airport to bring long term visitors to the island? If there were operating industries in the country, perhaps these culprits may be employed, hence they would not think of robbing visitors.

I am not condoning what these criminals, has done, but no one should fail to blame Skerrit for all of the ills of the country. Hunger, caused pain and desperation; and so desperate people do desperate things. The ones who robbed and injured the visitors perhaps never held a job in their entire life!

New Kid on the block! This is not only a Linton or Skerrit thing. This is a matter of national security! Did you attend the match? Did you attend prior matches? Do you realize that Australia had the largest crowd? Do you also realize that Australia is farthest away from us than every other team but New Zealand? Now be mindful that Jamaica is very popular; as a matter of fact, Jamaica is known as the Caribbean by most people. This could mean that the Australians might have taken the opportunity to go to Jamaica, also considering that Dominica seems to be a new and exciting destination. If they were here primarily because of Jamaica and came to our shores and these series of unfortunate events happened then we are in trouble. The Cricket world will now know about us and eliminate Dominica as a new destination.
Mr. New Kid on the Block, though the economy is ailing internationally, Dominica has potential for sustainable development, instead, poverty keeps creeping up!

A bunch of cowards looking to capitalize on people who work so hard. This is shameful and an embarrassment to our Dominica. Having test matches is one way of bringing in tourist and improving our economy. I think during times like these even we Dominicans must look out for the safety of ourselves and the tourists alike.

There is no country on earth where one can walk with impunity especially at nights in an unfamiliar location without running the risk of being assaulted or mugged. I don’t condone this behavior but safety in numbers is important. I live in the UK for many many years and I’ve learnt as a black man where I can go in safety. Dominica is a peaceful country but it only takes one bad apple to spoil the entire barrel

  15. June 8, 2015

Again, it all boils down to leadership! Living in New York city in the 1970’s and early 1980’s, the city was ridden with crimes and drugs. A young federal Prosecutor by the name of Rudolph Julliani came on the scene talking about the quality of life in the city. There were pip holes, x-rated movie cinemas and go-go bars all along Time Square and he vowed that those things had to go and the city must become the safest big city in the United States. At first, I was skeptical. During the mayoral election I voted for incumbent, David Dinkens, the first and only black mayor of New York city. But, thank God, Mr. Julliani won and the city was transformed and law and order came back to the city and the quality of life improved remarkably. Today, New York City continues to be the safest big city in the United States of America. Mr. Skerrit has not proven himself as a leader. How do you expect the people to abide by laws when he says the law and constitution does not pertain to him?…

    • funiti

get votes nor can a country develop by selling passports, u have no vision we need people to empower our young

The issue isn’t with the policemen on a whole. The issue is with the police force high command and security ministries inability to manage it’s resources effectively.

The average policeman is desperate to see operational change to the betterment of the public and society but are being frustrated by their commanding officers,

who in turn are being frustrated by THEIR commanding officers,

who in turn are being frustrated by the politicians and PS’s,

who in turn are being frustrated by Skerrits circle of colleagues and ‘friends’,

who in turn are being frustrated by Skerrit’s INNER CIRCLE of colleagues and friends,

who in turn are being frustrated by Skerrit and his authoritarian style and micro-management…

    $hit roles down hill…

When a prominent hotel in the middle of Roseau during the cricket match called the police for extra security they replied they were stretched. However, You could not find extra police patrol in Roseau for an International Cricket Match, but when the Jamaican artist came in just recently they were all over even on the bridge in Canefield.
What message are our law enforcement sending when they are very well aware of the influx of foreigners and the potential negative impact of crimes against tourist.

It just shows a very POOR MANAGEMENT of the police force human resources.

What I don’t understand is that some of us would try to blame everyone and everything to make excuses for the people who committed a crime on innocent people. There are no excuses for the bad behaviour displayed; only people to be blame are those who are responsible for the offences committed.

I call on the police to begin to rethink their approach to crime prevention and to begin to be proactive. The police leadership needs to decide on actions INDEPENDENT OF GOVERNMENT and to implement plans which can prevent unlawful acts, particularly at times of high visitor numbers. Laws should be put in place to allow for spot checks and searches where there is suspicion of anyone that they may intend to participate in criminal activity. If persons are found to be carrying weapons, then they should be disarmed and charged with carrying an offensive weapon. The most important thing is that proactive action must be effective in preventing such incidents. I also feel that such an actions should trigger a response from the govt where some sort of reward should be offered for information leading to arrests and prosecutions with anonymity offered to those who make such reports. SOMETHING MUST BE DONE!!! SOMEONE TAKE RESPONSIBILITY PLEASE AND MAKE THAT DIFFERENCE!!

I hold Skerrit, Blackmoore, Cabon and Mano responsible for this embarrassment. They were able to send over a hundred officers to frighten Saisburyians, and everyday they are out here planning on arresting villagers for a peaceful protest, but they did nothing to protect visiting Australians that came here to enjoy themselves. Yet, up to this day I have heard Nothing from them? Not an apology or condemnation? Are they in Dominica? This incident clearly shows that these guys are not concerned about making Dominica the best place to visit, to live, and to enjoy life. As for Man he should resign from being vice president of West Indies cricket because this incident happened right in his nose. He is the local rep of WICB

In a previous article a FOOL by the name of Real Possie had this to say: “And DNO just as bad to let a statement like this come out.” Fools like himself and others always like to blame DNO for publishing stories that take place. But please fools, take a look at this same story posted by Australian Journalist Martin Smith, on Cricket.com.Au “Aussie journalist attacked in Dominica.” Here is the link: http://www.cricket.com.au/news/reporter-mugged-in-dominica-daniel-brettig-players-warned-after-attack-australia-west-indies/2015-06-08

So STOP blaming DNO for reporting what is happening in Dominica! This is the computer age and nothing is kept in secret. Who Vex Vex – Freedom and UWP are not in power and therefore they do not have the resources at their disposal to do what needs to be done. The fact remains the Government machinery failed to put the resources at their disposal to proper use. They did not see the need for increased patrols and surveillance in and around Roseau as a priority. And they are quick to say that the police are stretched but when comes to cordoning of the court with SSU for a private case Isidore vs Eammanuel they could find resources – the situation in Salisbury they got resources, the planned protest at Melville Hall they got resources where police were camping out for days at the airport. The renaming of the airport police were checking vehicles at the bay in marigot; So there aren’t any excuses for the govt and its short sightedness. I am sure they will get resources to go to Public Works to deal with the workers there as threatened by Pinard. This Government continues to fail the country period!!!

These incidences are very close to a national disaster. Them fellers should be all over the press, radio showing the seriousness of the situation. Just sending a letter of apology isn’t enough. We have an ambassador to Australia, his voice and that of the Prime Minister should be loud and clear as regards the total condemnation of the incidences, after all the robberies and beatings were done since Friday.

Further to my comments as regards Government’s reaction to the crime against the Australians , Mr. Darrell Tytre said on Q95 this morning, the Ministers of Government are having a meeting with regards to the hurricane season, therefore, they will respond after the meeting. I would appear , what has happened to the Aussies should take second place.

  38. June 8, 2015

The culprits should be found as quickly as possible and punished severely to suit their crime,we are not in need of such a low life attitude in dominica, the police cannot be standing at the back of each victim and criminal at the same time, cctv should be placed next to each cash machine and all over roseau especially next to the hotels,i hope the rulling gov’t will take swift actions against these lazy criminals in order to deter crime.most times these crimes are done by lazy ,idle person with no respect to human lives…find them and throw the prison keys away in the ocean but before doing so make sure that they work in the prison to supply their own food and clothes,,do not make it easy for them to eat and drink the tax payers money in prison…good luck to the police officers …but the law needs changing in order to suit the crime.

  42. June 8, 2015

Based on comments from an earlier related news flash. The police can’t be everywhere at the same time however along with cameras and the police changing off some of their policing tactics I believe it could help. They can’t keep policing today as the days back then when Dominica was a paradise. The police could go to sleep for his entire 8 hour grave yard shift, wake at the end of his shift brush his teeth go home and need not sleep anymore. They’ve got to now try too keep a step or two ahead these crooks.
One thing that I believe can help a whole lot is for the police to begin patrolling in plain cloth, unmarked vehicles.Roseau is small, they could use bikes, roller skates, scooters,to cover the area quickly.Keep their equipment concealed, radios, badges etc. since they don’t carry guns. For all you know the crooks might attack them,if they’re that desperate.

  43. June 8, 2015

I won’t even waste time on saying what the authorities should do,that’s up to them…

Part of the sentencing should include a public flogging .Old Marketplace bear back 365 strokes every Saturday for the rest of the year. A Sewo session should be held whilst they are being flogged.( With WCK, etc Stars,Dupex etc. Its about time we get serious on crime be it private white colour, political and other types of crime rapist look out public amputation not castration
Like having a weak member public flogging is no laughing matter. Crimes against the state ej passport sale fraud, failure/cheating of land transfers etc ,etc.

        June 8, 2015

I do not condone what those authorities do to the criminals when they are caught. However, I have stated it, right here in Canada. If those criminals (Canadians) were residing in those countries, crimes would have been eradicated a long time ago. This is only what I admire about those countries. I do not fear informing my MP and MPP about it.
Criminals in the democratic world get away with too much which is why crimes are increasing and some extremely vicious ones. Through the years crimes have escalated in all countries.
When there are attorneys who state their clients are “first time offenders and they did not waste the Court’s time”, what do you expect? I call it the height of stupidity to make such a statement and if it is in the records, it should be erased.
Therefore, we in the democratic world must pay for increased crime. Our very own Laws protect them. They have more rights than victims. How sad and what a disgrace!!!

You somewhat made a good point. I reside in Toronto. No matter what, to a certain degree I feel save. Of course, I also pray to God to protect me. We are told to always be on the alert and know our surroundings when we go out.
As a Christian Catholic, I am not without Holy Water. I bless my surroundings, myself and keep a small bottle of it with me. If I am out and alone and ever attacked (I hope not), I will take my Holy Water and splash it on them. I will also show them my blest Rosary. Much more could be stated about that.
You can also pray the Our Father and the Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel and your Guardian Angel, if you know the latter two. They have protected people from even rapists and other criminals. I have read about that. I heard on US TV of two stories which occurred in the US. There may be more.
There are certain prayers to be said for protection. Then, I hope for the best.
D/can criminals could be bold, dangerous and vicious.

Aye, this is madness. Now we going to be labelled in the international media a place where tourists cannot safely walk around the capital at night for fear of being violently robbed and beaten…many capital cities have violence that tourists are warned about, but considering it all happened in one night and that one of them is with ESPN, this will likely become a media scandal that could impact our already-faltering tourism negatively.

But what will we do about it? That is the real question. What will *actually* tangibly change?

    June 8, 2015

At least 2 other Australians were robbed in Roseau on Friday night that are not mentioned in the article. I was one of them. The theft of my cards and drivers licence has ruined the rest of my holiday. It is a shame for the 99% of Dominicans whom I have found very friendly and welcoming that there are a few low-life criminals preying on tourists. Sadly this will forever colour my view of Dominica and as a result I will probably never come here again and will tell my friends in Australia never to visit Dominica. The resorts of Barbados, St Lucia and even Antigua are a far safer option.

Hey Paul, like many other Dominicans I apologise for what has happened to you and your friends on your visit to DA. I am sure you know or at least heard form others what a lovely and friendly island dominica is, and this isolated incident, please don’t let it change your mind.

Althouh this is an embarrassing incident I am convinced on you next trip things will be better in regards to police presence and vigilance of ordinary citizens looking out for visiting friends like youself .

Be advised Paul these perps will be caught and jailed. STAY TUNED

    • The Real Facts
      June 8, 2015

From afar, I am sorry to know that and to know the rest of your stay was ruined.
As I have been told, St. Lucia has had its share of crimes on tourists/visitors. Wherever you visit, please be careful.
In bygone years, Dominica was not like that. It is shocking. I ask myself what happened to our little island of Dominica. The same applies for the other islands and progressive countries. Crimes have increased and those criminals are more wicked than ever.
These criminals must be put away. If caught they must not be allowed on the streets only to re-offend and in a worst manner.
It bothers me that they commit crimes and are still out on the streets, free as ever, enjoying life. Something is wrong with the System.
I have no empathy for them. I would put them all away for some years. If possible, I would try to rehabilitate them.
All governments worldwide must do better than that, to keep those criminals out of mainstream society. They do not deserve freedom.

  50. Kracker Jacque
    June 8, 2015

Safety and security were probably important factors the victims considered in making the decision to travel to Domiinica. Make no mistake, these wicked and senseless actions of a few wayward perps will put a stain on Dominica’s reputation and a blemish on the island fledging tourism industry. The amount of money robbed from the victims will pale in comparison to the potential loss of future tourism dollars. May God bless the victims and their families and may He protect the law abiding citizens of our land from the growing criminal scourge.

Tis is so sad for us on a whole, but we are to be blamed too because when the talk came about putting CCTV Angelo and the rest claimed that they were infringing on their rights. • Titiwi
      June 8, 2015

Real Possie, I normally don’t support your views but I am all for cctv. Yes, it may be intrusive but that applies also to the miscreants. If I have no bad intentions or are not bent on crime I have nothing to fear from these cameras. A little intrusion is a small price to pay for increased safety and security. I must be honest and say that for some time now I have been afraid to use an ATM at night in Roseau.

    June 7, 2015

The police commissioner and the minister of national security needs to be fired with immediate effect. You cannot tell me that you have international cricket in town and you do not have police patrolling all over Roseau. It is due to there incompetence and mismanagement of the resources of the state that this has occurred. They are assisting the criminals of the land by not making available security to the citizens and visitors of the country. This performance is appalling and it needs to be questioned as to what are our tax monies paying these people for, is it for them to provide political mischief or to protect the country name.

But they are the ones that wants to go after the people in Salisbury and use dangerous chemicals on people protesting for their rights. how much more incompetent that you can get? It is ridiculous that these people are still purporting to serve the people of the country. I await to see what takes place with these idiots for their inaction in protecting

Brettig told the Australian media that he was attacked by two men armed with knives and thrown to the ground minutes after he withdrew some money at an ATM.

Up to this time I have heard nothing from Blackmoore! Blackmore, Skerrit and Cabon should all take responsibility for that. They knew their was going to be a test match and their would be visitors and therefore security should be very high. All ATM’s should be under extra high security. But Blackmoore nd his gang are busy threatening to arrest Salsbury farmers. What a shame!

  61. The Real Facts
    June 7, 2015

I am saddened to know this and disappointed that some people do not have the common sense and courtesy to leave visitors alone to enjoy their stay in D/ca. They give D/ca a bad name. Some of the visitors who were previously attacked in D/ca already have done so. It is bad for tourism/visitors.
Who would think they would do this to the cricketers, stealing from them and harming them?
Who could commit those crimes? You have no conscience; no heart. No excuse for them. Shame on you! You are doing well by making your way to Satan’s cauldron of everlasting fire. He already has you in his clutches. Only the wicked that are under his yoke would do something like that.
Those who know who they are should report them, incognito (if they wish), to the police.
An apology should be sent to each of those who were affected.
I am one for happiness, peace and safety. Let it be known that my words are insufficient to describe those bastards who placed a curse on themselves.
