The Dominica Olympic Committee (DOC) has described as “encouraging and excellent” the performances of three Dominicans who represented the country at the the Pan American Sports Organization (PASO) Festival in Mexico City on August 15 and 16, 2014.

The athletes are David Registe (Long Jump), Erison Hurtault (400m) and Yordanys Duranona Garcia (Triple Jump).

David Registe secured gold with progressive jumps of 8.04 meters followed by 8.06 meters on Saturday, August 15, a release from the DOC states. According to the DOC,  this performance was a life time best for the Alaska based Dominican-born athlete who got to 8 meters for the first time and established a national record in the process. Former Dominican Olympian runner, Erison Hurtault, who is also based in the US,  “narrowly placed 9th in 400 meters” and did not compete in the finals, the DOC goes on to state in the release. It adds that Garcia (a Cuban who’s married to a Dominican), smashed the Festival’s record in Triple Jump on Sunday, August 16 with a “Gold Record performance” of 17.20 meters.

The Dominica team placed 9th overall out of a reported 35 countries from the Americas and the Caribbean which participated in the Pan Am Games.

The athletes were “ably assisted” by Coach Rafael Echavarria (personal coach of David Registe) a qualified coach who, the DOC says, has assisted Dominica over the past six years.

“The Dominica Olympic Committee and its affiliate, the Dominica Amateur Athletics Association, applaud the progressive development of our athletes as we prepare for the Toronto 2015  PAN AM and RIO 2016 Olympic Games.  Go Dominica go!” concludes the release from the DOC.

Congratulations to ALL the athletes. Including the young 16 yr old Shannie Angol who didn’t get gold but did her utmost to compete against athletes who were much older than her. I do not understand how the DOC overlooked this opportunity to congratulate her, in effect encourage her in their release. Ggreat potential in the 16 year old. Congrats Shannie.

It will be great for the DOC to provide a result link, so that the results can be independently verified. I personally do not trust the current DOC from the President to the vice president to the general secretary. Here it is that we have a development program for athletes and coaches and we are sending Rafael Echavarria us US coach although the personal coach of David Registe; why can’t we send one of our local coaches, Nabi Wallace for example to gain more training/knowledge in assisting our local athletes. The article stated “who, the DOC says, has assisted Dominica over the past six years. How and Where?

    Show me the facts/proof.

    One Love Dominicans!!!!

Just tell the athletes congrats and move on. Who cares if you do not trust the results given? Then go research for yourself. We complain that the country has no money, especially to promote track and field but you still want DA to send a coach EVEN THOUGH they get the benefit of a very qualified one who is going with David ANYWAY. Stop the hate and congratulate.

Congratulations to the athletes who performed well at the Pan Am Sports Festival. But DNO please do not let the DOC confuse your readers that this is the PANAM Games. The PAN AM games will actually be held in Toronto in 2015.

Again great job to the individual athletes, but this was not the PANAM Games.

You are right. DNO’s headline is, to say the least ,misleading.
This event was the Pan American sports festival. established mainly as a training/rehearsal opportunity for the Pan American Games, to be held next year.
