Two of Dominica’s young athletes have qualified to compete in the IAAF U-18 World Youth Championship to be held in the Ukraine later this year.
Luan Gabriel and Ajani Reefe performed with excellence and met all requirements at the CARIFTA trial in Trinidad last weekend.
Gabriel clocked a personal best on track of 12.0 seconds in the U-20 girls 100 meters and 24.64 seconds in the 200-meter preliminaries.
Reefe clocked 22.67 seconds in the U-20 boys 200 meters.
Another Dominican athlete, who performed well at the trials and who qualified for the CARIFTA Games carded for this Easter in the Bahamas, was Donny Joseph.
Joseph accumulated a total of 4,080 points in the open boys Heptathlon which is a total of 7 events done over a two-day period.
He and Gabriel will be Dominica’s representatives at the CARIFTA Games.
Dayne Alexander, a rising talent in middle distance running, also performed well and ran personal best times in his two events.
In the 1,500-m he ran more than 10 seconds faster than his previous best, clocking a time of 4:27.52.
In the 800-m he shaved off two seconds of his previous best running a time of 2:04.96 seconds in the U-20 boys’ semi-finals.
His training partner Lynus Joseph clocked 2:09.59 seconds in the 800 meters which was 3 seconds outside his previous best.
Nabi Wallace served as coach during the trials.
The trip to the trials by the young athletes was made possible by many including Sports Coordinator, Trevor Shillingford & the Ministry of Sports, Billy Doctrove, manager for Luan Gabriel, Renata Siegenthaler, Thomas Letang, Bloaters Barber Shop, First Choice Delight and the Irish family.

Its good to see Goodwill Ambassador Billy Doctrove so instumental in the careers of our young atheletes and giving back to sports which gave him so much.This is very commendable and others capable of lending a hand should come forward and also play their part
