Friday, January 21 will mark the commencement of the Sports Division-organized 2011 United Insurance U-20 Cricket Championship.
A 9:30 am ceremony at the Botanic Gardens will open the championship. At this ceremony, brief remarks are expected to come from Parliamentary Representative of the Roseau Central Constituency Hon. Norris Prevost, Mayor of Roseau His Worship Cecil Joseph, Second Vice President of the Dominica Cricket Association Herbert Sabaroche, Sports Coordinator Trevor Shillingford and Nigel Shillingford, a representative of the sponsor, United Insurance Company Ltd.
Subsequent to the ceremony, a ballorama amongst the nine participating teams will take place. The nine schools taking part in this year’s league are the same from last year: Dominica State College, Dominica Grammar School, Goodwill Secondary School, St. Mary’s Academy, Pierre Charles Secondary School, Isaiah Thomas Secondary School, Castle Bruce Secondary School, North East Comprehensive School and Portsmouth Secondary School.
Last year’s champion was the North East Comprehensive School.
The Sports Division would like to thank the United Insurance Company Ltd. for once again sponsoring this competition. United Insurance has been a long-time partner with the Sports Division in terms of developing cricket at this U-20 level and their annual sponsorship of $10, 500 has really gone a long way in terms of assisting the Sports Division in defraying most of the costs associated with the running of the championship.
A EC$500 cheque goes to the winning school.
The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports looks forward to many more years of continued partnership with United Insurance as we engage our youths in positive and healthy activities.
