UPDATE: Homeboy Shillingford shines bright as Windies win big

ROSEAU, Dominica – Shane Shillingford continued his amazing comeback to international cricket as he bowled West Indies to a comprehensive victory over Zimbabwe during the second Test match on Friday.

The tall off-spinner took five wickets for 34 runs off 15 outstanding overs, as West Indies won by the huge margin of an innings and 65 runs on the third day. The Windies bowled out the visitors for 141 in their second innings to take the series 2-0 and retain the Clive Lloyd Trophy. Shillingford’s brilliance was complemented by the accurate off-spin of Marlon Samuels who picked up three second innings wickets to end with 6-50 in the match.

The West Indies won the first Test at Kensington Oval by 9 wickets inside three days last week.

West Indies skipper Darren Sammy declared at the overnight score of 381-8 – a first innings lead of 206 runs – and immediately Shillingford went to work much to the delight of the colour crowd of close to 8,000 fans.

He followed up his 5-59 in the Zimbabwe first innings on Wednesday and ended with the impressive match figures of 10-93. Overall he claimed a record 19 wickets in the two-match series to surpass the previous West Indies record of 16 wickets by Courtney Walsh in New Zealand in 1995. It was Shillingford’s second ten-wicket haul at his home ground following his 10-219 against Australia a year ago.

“It was a really great team performance and we are all very proud of what we achieved. Without my team-mates I couldn’t do it and couldn’t have achieved what I did today. The spirit was really good and I’m just happy we came out with this victory to clinch the series,” Shillingford said after he accepted the Match-of-the-Match and Man-of-the-Series awards.

“Today, I concentrated and was willing to be patient to get my wickets. It was a matter of not being complacent and applying ourselves. One of our goals was not to be complacent. We knew once we had them down we had to keep them down and that is what we did. It turned out the way we wanted it to. As a bowler I just want to keep taking wickets,” he added.

Reflecting on the period last year when he was left out of the Test team after his heroics against Australia, he said: “When I was dropped I felt ‘a certain way’, but I never let it get to me too deep. I was looking forward to the first-class season to go there and take some wickets and work my way back into the Test team.

“It was hard work to get back, but now I’m back I plan to stay here. Here is one of the places where the wicket is spin-friendly, but I still knew I had to get the balls in the right areas and build the pressure and that is what I tried to do out there,” Shillingford stated.

The victory was the sixth consecutive win in a row for the West Indies. The winning streak dates back to August last year when they beat New Zealand in Antigua and Jamaica; and last November when they beat Bangladesh in Dhaka and Khulna.

The Test results meant the West Indies won all the matches during the series. They won the One-Dayers 3-0 at the Grenada National Stadium and won the T20s 2-0 at the Vivian Richards Cricket Ground.

The West Indies was EXPECTED to hammer this hapless and inept side. Anything less would be an absolute shame. We will now see REAL TEST CRICKET with the arrival of the Powerful and super talented Pakistanis in July. If WI gets the better of them then this would be truly phenomenal. As for Shillingford, you’ve gotta play against which ever team is put before you. The world will get a better gauge as to his excellence or lack thereof in the Pakistan series.

Congratulations to you and the team; your success will be an inspiration to other local players. I know. Our youths are always looking for someones success to be inspired. Use all the observations from others to challenge yourself and stay in the nets, cherish your health and be very carefull with drugs and alcohol and you will have a great career. Good luck from someone who represented dominica as a proud cricketer…

Congratulations West Indies Team. Shane you surely did your best. I am happy for you and the rest of the team. You have made Dominicans proud of you and to rejoice that their very own, Shane, excelled in leading the team to win over Zimbabwe.
Victory is sweet. Enjoy it. You worked hard for it and deserve it. Take a good rest for now and rest at ease. Good luck for the future. May God always bless and assist you all the way to additional victories.

Congratulations to Shane Shillingford, you made us very proud. God’s guidance and blessings on your journey as a cricketer. Your hard work has paid off. To the Frazir Moh…whatever is his name, I hope he will over-ride his article and mention what a warm and welcoming people we are in Dominica because in another country he dare not put his foot on our soil. Shane treat that like how a dasheen leaf treats water and just concentrate on your career. We will as Dominicans continue to support you, you are our son. God Bless you son.

Congrats Dominicans for y’all great support for the match once again. I think it is now fair to say that Dominica is now the true hotbed for West Indies cricket support.

WICB, please give Dominica a test match when Pakistan comes to the Caribbean later this year for a two test series and we want a share of the pie when England and their massive Barmy Army supporters come to the Caribbean next year.

Congrats Shane. You did what i expected you to do.
Honestly since before the match i predicted
11 wickets for you at home… Like in Barbados you fell short of my prediction by just 1.
Let me just reiterate that you are the best test spinner in the Caribbean at this moment, and who do not want to accept that then…………
KEEP ON WORKING HARD….. Harder opposition are waiting on the horizon. Up your game by some notches..You have to sielnt them.!!!!!!
I am awaiting your 50th test wicket.
    So far it’s: 10 matches, 48 wickets,
average 31.22 Economy rate of 2.96.
    BRILLIANT YOUNG MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
The most successful spinners average at least 5 wickets per match. Saeed Ajmal, Rangana Herath, Graeme Swann, etc etc etc… You are not there yet, but convince yourself that you can be there too…..

  19. As I see it
    March 22, 2013

I don’t know what Frazeer Mohamed said about Shane that caused Dominicans to be so upset with him but Shans and the rest of us should not be upset with people when criticized but like Shane, we need to prove our critics wrong and use what they say as a motivation. Frazeer is a Trini and I guess he was disappointed when Narine was replaced by Shane just as I was upset when Shane was dropped for Narine. The compitition is good for our game as west Indians. Infact during a match between Trini and Guyana earlier this year, I think it was the morning before the team was selected to face Zimbabwe, I heard Frazeer Mohamid say that selectors should consider playing one seamer along with Sammy, and pick three spinners. When asked to name his spinners, first on his list was Shane, Narine, and the capt. of Guyana whose name I can’t remember. So please don’t take his criticizen of Shaneit too personal folks.
Just before the man of the match presentation Ian Bishop asked Jeff Dogoun if Shane should be considered as a good spinner? In respose Dojon said, “In conditions like this he is a handful. In different conditions he needs to learn to flight the ball more and invite the batsman to want to attack him.” he also said that Shane gets upset when he is attacked and that’s not good. As a Dominican I did not like it because most bowlers are more dangerous in conditions that help them. But does that mean Dujon was not fair to Shane? No! Shane needs to use this observation and to better his skills and prove Dujon wrong. Criticizen should make us better when taken in the right spirit even when it was meant to hurt us.

    • Justice and Truth
      March 22, 2013

Did you not read the article last week on DNO pertaining to what Frazeer stated? The man made some discriminatory comments.

    • Mamizoo
      March 22, 2013

As I noted Doujon and bishop’s comments were off bad taste. Shayne Warne did not flight the ball yet batsmen had a tough time facing Warne and arguably on of the greatest spin bowlers off all times.
I think that Doujon and Bishop’s comments serve to justify leaving Shane off the team for upcoming tours( my opinion).
Why should a bowler seek an aggressive approach from the batsman when the bowler can keep the batsman at bay and uncomfortable. After all the game is about numbers and Shane’s role is to both suppress runs and gain wickets. For gd sake he did both. Why should he invite the batsman to score runs. Now if Shane had those wickets at a very high runs rate then An and Doujon would get on Shane’s back for allowing to much runs.

    • SPORTS LOVER
      March 23, 2013

you should read the article so you will understand why Dominicans were upset by his comments. It is not that we were disappointed he was not happy that Narine was dropped. It was his comments, the words he used to describe Shane, bordering racism and very distasteful.

  31. Act of Contrition
    March 22, 2013

In two test matches played in Dominica, Shane took 20 wkts, and that makes me very proud as a Dominican. Although his 10 wickets against the Aussies was in vain since the Aussies beat us, I will take it ahead of the 10wkt victory over Zimbabwe. To me, Zimbabwe is not ready for test cricket and ICC is bringing down the standard of test cricket by making them play international cricket. To be beaten in 2 & 1/2 in both games is unacceptable and ICC should refund us our money. Windward Island against rest of the world would probably perform much better than the Zimbabweans. What I saw should not be called test cricket and Zimbabwe should practice against Kenya, Canada, USA, Afganistan etc.

    • Channel 1
      March 22, 2013

@Act of Contrition – You obviously don’t follow international cricket very closely. True Zimbabwe played poorly but they are an international ICC qualified top 10 cricket team.

They have just returned to the international scene after a few years of self-imposed exile due to political upheavals etc in their country. Zimbabwe has beaten and challenged a number of stronger teams in world cricket in recent years. They will become stronger as they begin to play more frequently.

Way to go Dominica, Shane and the West Indies Team, well done. We are very proud. Thank you.

Zimbabwe I am sure did their best to win also; but in sports as in other areas in life – when there is a competition one side wins and the other loses.

The trick is to accept the defeat with class and dignity and the winner celebrate your win because you deserve it.

Next time the tables can turn – so for now, West Indians enjoy the victory, we are happy it has happened in Dominica in our World Class Stadium.

Oh quit with the ignorant Fazeer comments.

    • Mamizoo
      March 22, 2013

Th ignorant Frazerr Comment! What it is that Shane has to do to be recognized as a full blown well deserving West Indian Team member. I listen to Ian Bishop and Dougon at the end of the game and Dougon is saying that Shane does not face the batsmen to play shots – ca you believe ths. Instead of admitting that the batsmen are afraid of playing shots or cannot play shots against he is hinting that against a top quality team Shane will not be ready. They quickly browse part te Australia performance and went on to Shane’s performance in England. Despite the fact that every batsman who has faced Shane will all tell you the same be it Australian, Regional, Shrilankan – they all respect Shane’s bowling.
After listening to this two commentators I knew then that they were just looking for justification to drop Shane from the next tour.
It is amazing the things that people do and say just to hold on to an empty and bias disposition. Note that Zimbabwe players score centuries against other top teams but today they an inferior batsmen because they are going against Shane Shillingford from the undeserving Dominica .
So my friend don’t take Frazeer’s comment lightly. This is a perpetual conspiracy. It is a repetitive victimization that our payers have endured. From Ervin Shillingford, to Jaan Ettiene ( the best leg spinner the wet indies had at the time not kieth Artherton) and now Shane.

Shane has vindicated all those who came before him: players such Shillingford & Shilingford; that is Irvin, and Grayson; Norbert Philip and all the others whom the West Indies selectors of the 1960/1970’s and into the 1980’s did not give a fair chance.

Dominica has always produced excellent players.

Even my mane sake, the Wesley Kid Telemaque, Lockhart Sebastian and others did not get the chance they deserved!

Shane seems to be the incarnation of Lance Gibes; he will become part of West Indies cricket history.

u sure is W.I that didn’t give the chance…, or our own selectors that pressing our players… it starts at home…. while we celebrate shane… we could be celebrating Mervin also together with shane… one of the names u mentioned can be asked about that..

” mots” Dominica best of the best was always selected, that is why Dominica was known to be the best in the Windward islands. At one time it was believed that the Windward islands could have produced a team that could have challenged any international team.

In the event, that hope materialized, there would have been at least nine (9) Dominica players on the team, Dominica selectors in those days had nothing to do with anyone who played West Indies representative cricket.

Mind you not only did the big four Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad, and Guyana who were the dominant, and which had everything to do with West Indies Cricket, discriminated against Dominicans, and the rest of the Windward islands, the players in the Leeward Islands suffered the d=same faith, for no other reason but for their birth place, which the big four term small islands, that was a stigma, until Grayson Shillingford was picked as a token, then Andy Roberts of Antigua who turn out to be a fantastic fast bowler.

When they could not do any better they brought in Finely of St. Vincent as a wicketkeeper, then when the kid Willet from St. Kitts made it the rest becomes history!

In the days when Caleb Laurent of Grand Bay was ignored, the West Indies selectors did the same thing to a very good spin genius from Antigua in the person of Eustas Matthew, the man was in his late thirties, in a conversation with the late Frank Worrel, Eustas ask him if he thought that he had a chance to make it into the WI team; Frank response to him was ” maybe in another twenty years.”

So if someone in their prime in their late thirty’s assuming thirty-six years old: 36 + 20 = 56 years, can you see the sort of thing our players may have suffered, he actually told Matthew you will never make it into West Indies cricket, and my theory hold true, since both Frank, and Eustas are long dead!

In the days in question people retired at age 55 years old!

Take it from me the Dominica selectors may or my not have favored some players, in a local sense, however, they had absolutely no say in West Indies cricket in general.
