Saints has emerged as champs in the Maxroy Trading Southern cricket league after they soundly defeated Marinor Granites in the finals by nine wickets at Poree, Pointe Michel.
Winning the toss and batting first Granites were dismissed for 138 in 23.1 overs with the lower half of the batting having to make some meaningful contributions. Hayden St. Rose got 21 and wicket keeper Gian Benjamin 21. Captain Reginald Darroux hit a quick fire 17.
Bowling for Saints, John Matthew grabbed 4 for 26 and Kirsten Casimir 2 for 38. In search of victory, Saints raced to 141 for 1 from 15.2 overs with national players Kirsten Casimir 60* and Tyronne Theophille 55 * guiding them home.
Meanwhile in football NDFD Back Street put on a spirited come from behind fight back to be crowned the Rayburn Blackmore Mahaut KO Football champs.
In the finals played at the Mahaut playing field before an appreciative audience Back Street, who were 2 goals down during the half, scored two late second half goals and won on penalty kicks over Busta Warner.
Ronnel Julian and Irwin Bruno ensured that Warner had the upper hand during the first half as they each scored a goal but Back Street pressed on and piled on the pressure to pull one back in the 73rd minute of play through Jerome Charles and in the 90th minute Kenny George got the all important equalizer to send his team to the penalty spot.
Warner made a harsh of their kicks and in the end it was NDFD Back Street Stars that was celebrating with victory with the trophy and EC$1,500.00 cash while the losers got EC$750.00. Ernie Bruno of Warner was voted MVP.
The LIME Premiere Division of the Dominica Football Association picked up steam over the weekend with victories for Scotia Bank Bath Estate and Kensbro.
Kensbro went on a goal spree against the hapless Icons teams of Newtown trouncing them 7-0 at the Geneva playing field in Grand Bay. Icons now has only one point from four matches and are now in danger of relegation along with Wacky Rollers.
In the other premier division game played at Benjamin’s Park in Portsmouth between former champions Bath Estate and Northern Concrete Steel Bombers of Portsmouth, the lads of Bath Estate won that game 3-1.
Bath Estate took the lead in the 2nd minute of play through Lester Langlais and 10 minutes later Kurlson Benjamin, fresh from overseas duty with the national team, made it two nil bu blasting a well directed right footer which got a slight deflection from a Portsmouth defender on its way to scoring.
Portsmouth pulled one back through the penalty spot after one of their players was pushed from behind. Glenworth Elizee made no mistake from the spot kick sending his team into the half down by one.
However, in the second half a beautiful right footer outside the 18 yards box from Hugo Riley put a further dent for Portsmouth sending the score 3-1 in favour of Bath Estate which remained at the end of the final whistle.
