West Indies beat Bangladesh by 77 runs

Windies celebrate victory

West Indies won the first Test against Bangladesh by 77 runs on the fifth and final day in Dhaka on Saturday, taking a 1-0 lead in the two-Test series.

Bangladesh, who were set a 245-run target, were bowled out for 167 in their second innings to lose for the 64th time in their 74 Tests.

Sohag Gazi took 6-74 — the best figures by a Bangladeshi bowler on debut — to raise hopes of a home win as the West Indies were dismissed for 273 in their second innings in the morning.

But the Bangladeshi batsmen floundered against a pace-cum-spin West Indian attack, with Tino Best taking a maiden five-wicket haul of 5-24 and left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul finishing with 3-32.

The second and final Test begins in Khulna on November 21.

Match scores: West Indies 527-4 declared and 273; Bangladesh 556 and 167.

I must take this opportunity to question the non selection of Shane Shillingford. While I congratulate Sammy and his guys on a fine victory, I must ask why is it Shane is given such a difficult time by Windies selectors. Shane has never failed the West Indies, but he has bee failed by the West Indies over and over again. One can look at the record since Shane appeared on the first class scene and he has been a performer every year. It took so many years for the selectors to recognize him and as soon as someone else appeared on the scene he was done away with. Don’t give up Shane. Keep performing. We are with you.

After we scored 500 plus for 4 declared, I thought it was going to be an easy inning defeat. However, when Bangladesh replied with their 500 plus. I then said it was a batting mat and game would draw. In the second inning we were at one point 200 for 1 wkt, I thought we needed another 150 to feel safe. After we lost some quick wkts and by the end of the day we had a lead of 214 with 4 wkts left, I said we need at list 75 more. But it so happened on the last day we lost all 4 wkts with a lead of less than 250. Then I told myself that we would win and indeed we won! This game called cricket is really a game of glorious uncertainties and the victory today confirmed that. I am olmost certain that with a lead of less than 300 runs sammy would not have declared and it would have been a drawn game, but the game took all its turns and twists, and at the end it was a good win for us. Let’s go windies! Although Shane was not treated fairly I am happy for the win.

Sincere congratulations to the West Indies Team.

We are getting there slowly but surely. We need to keep the momentum to the next match, throughout the present series and the next.

This tour must be used to build on a solid platform for future victories and to reestablish our glory days.

Whereas victory over Bangladesh will not be sufficient evidence that we have overcome our past horrors, especially considering the scare of a mini-collapse in the 2nd inning, we are confident that we are turning the page.

Now is the time to show the world that we are not only T20 Champions but a competitive team in all forms of the game.

Galye and others must settle down like Chanderpaul and Powell and be more patient, armed with teh knowledge that test cricket is not the calypso T20 cricket.

We need to ensure that we establish strong starts through a settled opening pair and seize opportune moments in games when they present themselves and dominate the opponent.

For instance, Chanderpaul should have been given the opportunity to establish a new personal best above 203, while we extend our score closer to 600 before declaring.

Any way, a hearty congratulations. Thanks for making us proud.

    Respectfully
    Roseau Valley

I don’t think we should judge our progress on the basis of this match. We are expectede to win and anything short of that would be a disappointment.

To judge our progress, we need to win against the top teams. Beating a team that has won 3 games out of 70 odd is no reasin to celebrate. I see these matches as practice sessions for the team.

It’s nice to win these games, but I would not jump for joy with victories over Bangladesh or Zimbabwe.

I was one among those who think that the West Indies had declared too early. After the home team had batted I said that the match was going to be a draw but after West Indies batted for the second innings and and made 273,I said the home team was surely going to win the match. I was frausted and went to bed, then in the morning surprisingly, I’m hearing that West Indies won the match, well done guys the bowlers did a fantastic job. Cricket is always a game of chances. You only have to wait till the last ball is bowled. Once again congrats guys.

      Wiliam, I hear you.

On the heels of an exciting W.I victory, we must commend Mr. Tom Lafond for voicing his concerns with the non-selection of Shane Shillingford. Mr. Lafond spoke amidst the silence of our Minister of sports and other sports authorities in Dominica. Nevertheless, I have found the reasoning advanced by Tony Cozier to be instructive.

In his article of 28 October 2012 entitled, “Permaul fast-tracked past Shillingford”, Cozier quoted an irate Tom Lafond, who was really flabbergasted by the decision of the W.I selectors. Mr. La fond called the preference for the uncapped left-arm spinner as a “a travesty” before (according to Tony) going on to “the ironic non-sequitur that the recall of Barbados batsman Kirk Edwards led to his concern that “we are going back to the days of insularity”

Tony proceeded to offer what I thought is a reasonable explanation for Shillingford’s non-selection – albeit the timing for this rationale is bad and does not justify the non-selection of Shillingford. It is for the precise reason that Permaul is still very young that Shillingford who has performed should have been picked. But Permaul did reasonably okay on his debut taking 4 wickets.

Cozier made a logical deduction, “to add Shillingford, although a fine bowler whose spirit is evident in overcoming the trauma of adjusting his flawed action, would be an overkill. He argued, “in the unlikely scenario that two spinners are required, the other should turn in the opposite direction to Narine.

As it is, Samuels and Deonarin are two accredited batsmen who have proven themselves as handy offspinners…. without Narine, he (Shilligford) would be an automatic pick. Unless Narine is injured, overcome by the bowling yips or commits himself fully to global T20 franchises, such a scenario won’t change.

Tony does admit though that on experience alone, left-arm spinners Sulieman Benn and Nikita Miller, have a much stronger claims than Permaul but the evidence is that neither seems to fit into the present scheme of things, perhaps, but not solely, as they are both past 30 while, at 23, the Guyanese Permaul has more of a future.
Anyway as long as the W.I continues to win, these issues will not be hot subject matters.

      Congrats to the Windies.

      Respectfully
