Jason Holder will lead West Indies in the 2019 World Cup as the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) announced the squad on Wednesday evening.
Big-hitting batsman Chris Gail will be playing his fifth World Cup as the squad comprises few big names in Andre Russell, Darren Bravo, Shai Hope and Kemar Roach.
The flamboyant Kieron Pollard and star spinner Sunil Narine missed out a berth in the 15-member squad.
The squad was picked by the newly appointed interim selection panel, chaired by Robert Haynes, along with Jimmy Adams and West Indies’ coach Floyd Reifer.
Speaking about the squad, Robert said the selection panel gave preference to combination. “The selection panel looked at the skill set of the players and the combinations. We have looked at the wickets that have been used in England in the past, players fitness and their urge to represent West Indies. We came up with a balanced team who will represent West Indies in England.”
This is a weak line up, y leave out Narine when he is in form- one of the world’s best T20 alrounders. This is basically the same side the previous admin would have picked.
So much for change, same old …..
The West Indies are picking to loose this cup, I watch the IPL. 20/20 and what I saw of Bravo, Russel, Pollard, and the rest of the guys and one can clearly the shape these guys are in and there is no reason why these guys were left out for those who don’t know about the IPL. Its (INDIA PREMIER LEAGUE) It is going on right now all over India and they select players from all over. Great cricket to watch
I’m not an English teacher but I see this mistake much tooooo often, the word ‘loose’ is used for ‘lose’.
LOOSE means:
1. Not fitting tightly or closely
2. Not fixed in place, not secure
LOSE means:
1. Stop having, be deprived of
2. Misplace, drop, forget, leave behind
Just something to think about next time using these two words. No embarrassment intended. I learn from others also.
Pollard is a game winner/changer and to leave him out of the team is a major error in my view, likewise Dwayne Bravo, Narine etc. I don’t see what Bishoo is still doing on the team, for test cricket yes but nothing else. Samuels is talented but on the lazy side and so is Darren Bravo. This is just my view.
Dan, I agree with your assessment but would like to label Samuels as erratic (behavior and production) while Bravo is just aloof, period. On paper, the team looks like a good mixture of experience and youth in a lineup balanced with both explosive and circumspect batsmen. There should be no shortage of runs; however, we will have to wait to see if the bowlers deliver. Let us continue to “rally round the West Indies”.
So why they stayed until the final hour to pick the team? I thought that delay was a sign that they were going to bring back Pollard and Dwayne Bravo. But the same team Courtney Brown, Dowlin and Sebo would have picked and as a result hopes of winning the WC disappeared.
This team looks pretty good to me. If it were 20 overs I would have thought of including Pollard . Waiting until the end is ok ..
@Former Cricketer – Bring back Pollard and Dwayne Bravo for what nuh? On what basis should these guys be brought back into the West Indies ODI team? By the way, please note that Dwayne Bravo retired from international cricket late last year.
Like some of all you forget is serious licks West Indies was getting when all these so-called stars were regular members of the West Indies ODI team eh.
Surely you cannot be saying to bring back these guys based on their exploits in domestic T20 club tournaments around the world such as the IPL.
How anybody can call a guy like a Pollard, who has a dismal batting average of 25.71 after 101 ODIs, a star cricketer is really a mystery. Pollard is nothing more than a glorified club cricketer.
My sincere apologies to DNO who did include an attached link to view the full West Indies World Cup squad. Lesson learned here is it pays to scroll down before hitting enter.
It would have been nice if DNO had included the full squad names in the article. This probably would have spurred some serious (and good natured) banter on the inclusion and exclusion of certain players.
