X-Men and Raptors win basketball championships

Last night (Wednesday) in the LIME National Basketball Finals, which was played in front of a huge crowd of over 500 persons, saw the conclusion of the regular basketball season.

Both series, with records of 2-1, gave the possibility of two teams being crowned the champion of a division (Premier & Division 1) .

The schedule for the evening were  game one, Gloria Shillingford Raptors verses Raffoul Snipers and game two, the Glam X-Men verses Paix Bouche Eagles. And the fans who turned out in their numbers from Roseau, Wesley and Paix Bouche were not disappointed; the games were played to a very high standard and a standard not seen in Dominica for a long time and adding to the overall excitement of a finals was the premier game being carried live by DBS radio. Top scorers for divison 1: Gloria Shillingford Raptors – Devon “Antiguan” Barton 27 pts, Steve Hypolite 16 pts and Curtis Akiel 16 pts, and for Raffoul Snipers, Hendricks Holsborough 27 pts and Lenin Paul 20 pts.

Game 1 –  With good weather, the fans from Wesley and Paix Bouche came down to support their teams Gloria Shillingford Raptors and Raffoul Snipers and they were on the edge of their seats or toes as the game went back and forth with lead changes. At half time the scores were Raptors 35 pts and  Snipers 32; that slowly changed by the third quarter with Snipers taking a one-point lead when the game entered the fourth quarter leading 48 pts to 47 pts. The game remained close until the last minute when the Raptors took the lead and maintained to win the the game 73 pts to 69 pts and become the new 2010 Division 1 champion, the first for Wesley, which ended to spontaneous celebration with their sponsor Honorable Gloria Shillingford by their side.

Game 2 – Which would decide a game five or the new 2010 national basketball champion who will be able to represent Dominica as the champion team of Dominica in regional tournaments. The fans, after witnessing the nail-biting finish of the first game, were even more hungry for great basketball excitement – and they were not disappointed even after some technical breakdowns.

The first quarter ended 23 pts to 23 pts with both teams feeling each other out but neither team could dominate or take control of the game. It remained tight and ended at half time with X-Men leading by one point 44 pts to 43 pts. The second half continued no different than the first half and remained tight with lead changes on a regular interval, then came the final quarter and both teams went to their big guns to take it home – Garth Joseph and Davidson Toulon for X-Men and Andel “Brad” George and Lynvor John of Eagles. At the end, the X-Men won the game and became the new Premier Division champion. The final scores were The Glam X-Men 80 points and Paix Bouche Eagles 75 points; top-scorers for X-Men were Garth Joseph 27 pts and Davidson Toulon 19 pts while for the Eagles Andel “Brad” George with a game-high 40 pts and Lynvor John 19 pts.

This concludes the regular season of the LIME National Basketball 2010 season.

Jacko, get your facts right, mickey won 2 championships in Windsor Park, 1 in Massacre and 3 in Lindo Park, its not the place , its all about the team and management. It was good to see basketball become a talking point again great job by the Executive and President Dave Baron.

@Xmen Fan Waiting for the ball to come to his hand is EXACTLY what a big man is supposed to do! They get into position & POST UP! It’s the guards job to work it in to him. Unfortunately the Xmen point guards are lacking in their passing & dribbling skills.

When basketball in Massacre Robo winning championship and when its in goodwill Mickey wins. Next season We want basketball in Paix Bouche or Grandbay we one of those teams can win too.Coruption in every corner and in everything in Dominica.

If the games were properly refreed the X men team would have never made it to the playoffs farless to win this championship. Even after X men won the championship there was no big celebration on the court becauise the basketball fanantics didn’t see excitment in X men games. the calls were one sided all th time.

@ Xmen fan From your comment it’s hard to believe you watched any games, especially last night. Toto does hustle & play hard but the man missed at least 10 layups … wide open! Garth missed 2 shots the whole night. Of course he is the top player on the Xmen. The top player is not necessarily the top scorer, but if that is what you want to go by I’m sure he has one of the highest averages & best percentages. To bad the Xmen don’t have a good point guard so he could be utilized properly. His temper & language do need an adjustment!!!

As for Mickey, it’s ridiculous that he did not give the entire team some minutes, especially Gwen. You can not blame that on Garth. MICKEY = ONE VOICE, his own.

    CONGRATULATIONS XMEN.

Garth uses his body once in a life time in those games. analyse how he used it in th efirst quarter………. or did he use it at all. He needs to play better ball and stop waiting for his team mates to give him the ball in his hand.

    @XMen Fan
How you expect Mickey to put Nigel on the court in a do or die game like that. Nigel knows he is not the star player. That games was above his level, when you fighting for the trophy like that.

Boy you are hung up on Garth. And I agree he is not the hardest player, he is not the most accurate player and even Jojo plays a faster, more accurate game that him. So did Toto last night, I agree with that too but Garth is there for his size and intimidation and domination. Were you at Paix Bouche, when Garth make a swing of his body he literally knock down two guys in his path. He physically just slap the ball out of their hands on many occasions and that is why Garth is there. He top scored at many of the games, yes because he is the go to guy. All teams have a go to guy. Even in the NBA.

Embrace the basketball, Mickey heped them to put on a good fight and they came out Victorious. You mentioned Garth got the comment but do you feel that Toto was confident enough to make a comment on TV or was Garth?

DABA had a good season and the weather held up well, we witnessed very exciting games especially from the first division. Wesley and XMen wanted it last night they fought harder for it and they got it. Snipers are highly skilled, impressive, but they need HEART, they need GUTS, that was what gave Wesley the win, simple as that.

X-Men Fan, its only a game and Mickey never coaches to loose, but anytime X-Men don’t need mickey services, thats no problem for him.

Really I am a die hard x men fan but i must be frank here today with my comments.

I dont understand how Mickey Joseph running his show. Gwen sponsored the team and you mean on the last day of the big game he did not even get a five minutes sweat – what a thing. Mickey allows gath to play the entire game like he is some kind of God and plays extremely well. Garth is not the best player on that team. As a matter of fact I have been to every x men game and Garth’s attitude is less than pleasing. He blames everybody when they miss a pass. He makes no effort to get the ball considering his height ans size yet he blames all the players except himself. The F’s that come from his mouth on and off the court is something else. For a person that come from the NBA standard of basket ball, Garth should be dominating the games and letting his height and size work in his favor.

I wonder what was his average score for the season.

Fact: the X men won the game and the championship but it was not because of Garth. Toto played a damn good game last night Yet Garth was the one that got the interview. Mickey has Garth like a God but he must try and listen to the spectators view of his star player.

The amount of basket that Garth missed in the first quarter.mmmmmmmm and he is standing right beneath the rim. he expects the other players to work hard and just give him the ball.

Folks, Mickey’s game plan in the last four minutes of the game was ‘ Fellas we have four minutes, just get the ball and give it to Garth” that statement upset everyone who was standing by the bench – both supporters and non supporters of the X-men. This guy plays the entire game not because he is the best but because they are bias towards him.

And what about Murphy – not even a minute of play. The guy got frustrated and took off to have one or two. LOL

Anyway Mickey start looking for another star player because the one you have is going to start his own team

I hope next year will be better.

Where are the pictures or clippings from the games. Let us see our young athletes, promote them, they are our local celebrities and we should praise and promote them. Lets get to know them. Show some pictures so they will feel proud and motivated to continue to do good. If they had commited a crime their pictures would be found and shown. Lets promote good too.

Same goes to Marpin, SAT and the Government, who fail to film the games and air them for the rest of Dominica to see. Marpin came a filmed a short portion for news, but please tape all of it and show it even on the GIS promgram, let us see our own celebrities, lets encourage them.
