Young soccer player of Dominican parents continues to impress

Jafi Alexis

Editor’s note: In April Dominica News Online featured 9-year-old soccer player Jafi Alexis, whose parents are from Portsmouth but living in the US, as creating waves in the sport. Jafi has continued impressing everyone who sees him play.

Brazilian Soccer School (BSS) player Jafi Alexis recently returned from a summer soccer camp with the Bundesliga Eintracht Frankfurt FC club, in Germany. Eintracht Frankfurt is one of the top clubs in Germany.

After one week of intense soccer training Jafi received several awards: the first award he received was for achieving a score of 136/140 for his overall performance on the field.

The second was an MVP award at the end of the week that was received for being the most talented player among a field of kids at the camp.  The group included fifteen year olds!  The coaches were highly impressed with his individual skills and he was invited back to the club for a two week academy training camp to be held in the summer of 2012. There he will be training with more gifted players.

According to BSS coaching director Horace McFarlane Sr, “Jafi’s talent: speed, dribbling skills, coordination and soccer IQ is exceptional and will take him to great heights. Everyone who has seen Jafi play understands that he is a talented player and always leaves an impression. Next year both he and his dad are looking to expand his international soccer experience.”

The Germany trip caps a tremendous year so far for the diminutive player from the Bronx, New York.  In April, he attended the Mundialito tournament in Portugal, which included teams from Real Madrid, Barcelona, Sporting Lisbon, Rangers, Everton, and Valencia, to name a few and Jafi left his mark.

McFarlane Sr. who is also Jafi’s trainer, said he ran into coach Daniel Goncalves, Academy Coach at Sporting Lisbon, at a conference in New York and asked if he recalled seeing Jafi at the tournament. Coach Gonzalez said that all of the participating team coaches who saw Jafi play spoke very highly of him. The Real Madrid coaches were also impressed by the “Morenito’s performance.”

Jafi is currently looking forward to going back to the BSS fall program starting in September.

My idea for playing soccer is as follows: players move in attack, while the one who has the ball, decides what to do with it. If he decides to pass the ball, then he would move as the other guys in attack. You just have to know how to move.

Good for the young man but he is not from Dominica, so why was this story even featured? Are we trying to make ourselves feel good on the back of other countries nationals?

His parents are from Dominica? What does that say? When we have a born and raised talent like this young man please run a story and I will be happy for Dominica.

reggae boys in the world cup was predominantly Jamaican who were not born in Jamaica- jamaican parentage. The Barbados team that played Dominica in D/ca was also made up of barbadians who were not born and bred in B’dos.

      Well said Admin.
Some People are just too dam negative. Whether he is a Dominican or not, he’s a young child who seem to have some direction in life unlike so many around the world who are like sheep without a compass/GPS. So just be happy for him, if not then just shut the hell up.

Piper, you are so much of a pessimist. I bet that is how you look at life in general. Truly tragic. If you do have kids, please do the world a favor and don’t share your pessimism with them.

Come back in 6 years with a follow up. Many kids show promise in their early years but never make anything out of it. It is much too early to judge whether this kid will go anywhere.
