Dubai, United Arab Emirates – West Indies Under-19s recorded a superb victory by 18 runs over Australia Under-19s on Thursday to win the three-match limited-overs series.
The Windies made 229-8 in their 50 overs and bowled out the Aussies for 211 in 48.3 overs to win the third and final match at the Global Cricket Academy. After losing the first match, the West Indies rebounded to win the second match by 102 runs and took the series in style on Thursday.
In the batting, West Indies were led by Kyle Mayers, who made a superb 98 not out off just 100 balls.
The 18-year-old left-hander from Barbados blasted nine fours and two massive sixes to lead a superb fight-back in the second half of the innings.
The side had slumped to 95-5 in the 31st overs but the last five wickets put together 134 runs in the final 19 overs.
Speaking after the day/night match, Mayers said he was delighted to perform so well in the Windies shirt.
“When I went in we were in some trouble so I knew I had to bat for the team and get a good total on the board. I was not really looking at the score too much. I was looking to bat time, and I knew once I batted to the end of the innings the team would get the score we were looking for,” Mayers said.
“Missing out on a hundred was not a big thing to me. I was just happy to do my job and help the side build a winning total. Everybody in the squad is very happy with today’s victory. It is a great feeling to perform this way and win for the people back home in the West Indies. A win like this in the match and in the series puts us all in a good frame of mind for the upcoming three-day match.”
After the batting heroics, the bowlers then went to work to restrict opposition batsmen.
Four bowlers took two wickets Ronsford Beaton (2-31), Derone Davis (2-35), Amir Khan (2-39) and John Campbell (2-33) in a superb allround team effort.
The three-day match against the Australians will be played at the Global Cricket Academy. First ball on Sunday is 10 am (2 am Eastern Caribbean Time).
