Strength and integrity of Kalinago women highlighted

Cozier Frederick addresses the women’s gathering on International women’s Day in the Kalinago Territory

The strength and integrity of Kalinago women took centre stage during International Women’s Day celebrations this year in Dominica.

Minister of Kalinago Affairs, Cozier Fredrick, said at an Indigenous Women’s Round Table Breakfast Discussion held in the Kalinago Territory on Sunday, Dominica’s indigenous women have played a significant role in civilization and development of the country.

Cozier said although many have argued overtime that there seems to be a division between men and women, he stands against this notion.

He remarked that based on historical records such as enslavement, women were just as important within that period as men.

“When we hear stories of men standing up and rebelling against the society at the time when they fought against an oppressive system, women were an integral part of that movement,” he noted.

He said Kalinago people have never been victims of discrimination and although their contributions may have been discounted, they are still there.

“If we speak about Kalinago influence, we have to look beyond those subtle and small aspects of discrimination and look at the positive impact of indigenous people…we have to move away from crying and being meek…to highlighting the contributions of Kalinago.”

The minister pointed out that Kalinago women are engaged in major roles in society such as school principals and leaders of health districts, among many others.

He said Dominicans who now discriminate against women are not representative of Dominica’s heritage.

This is all well and good, but We have a Carib chief that’s rendered ineffective by the parl rep. The drug and drink problems are spiralling out of control. Unemployment in the territory is atrocious. You have a teacher spreading rumours about a young lady catching aids. And is untrue. Police officers and people to be respected preying on the young girls. Rapes goes unreported ( I know 3 young ladies who are scared to report ) and that’s just the tip of the ice berg. You have educated people in the territory being unused because of there political affiliation and a pm that has shown his disdain for things to develop the area. The territory has gotten a lot but the social ills will take a lot of hard work

Government has failed miserable over 19years to invest in visible (not loud BS talk) social, tourism, economic and agricultural development in this rich, dedicated, committed Carib Council and its hard working dedicated people who continue to wave and wait outside for government to drive through and offer a penny to them.
It is sad in 2020 to see the state and deterioration of our hard working, dedicated, culturally rich Kalinago people who reside in their Territory with alot of potential in tourism, handicrafts, culturally talented in many ways, where if all of these are well managed and supported the people and its Reservation should be busy in agriculture, Tourism, farming and other challenges that is able to uplift the Territory to this higher height.
I must also say that we need the Carib Chief to be seen and heard. Must be available & visible to pontificate strongly and openly the real development needs of the Kalinago area and its people. Chief must be seen to be at working.
