Supermoon 2024: Its final appearance in the night sky tonight

Tonight, the sky will be graced with the final supermoon of 2024, known as the Beaver Moon. This celestial event will be the last of four consecutive supermoons this year, and it promises to be a spectacular sight.

The Beaver Moon will reach its peak brightness at 4:28 PM EST (21:28 GMT) tonight, but the cosmic show will begin once the sun sets, around 4:40 PM EST. The moon will appear larger and brighter than usual due to its close proximity to Earth, being just 226,000 miles away.

In the Eastern Caribbean, the supermoon will be visible from around 6:00 PM local time, with the best views expected a few hours after sunset.

In North America, the moon will be visible from sunset onwards, with peak brightness around 4:28 PM EST. The supermoon will rise in the evening in Europe, with optimal viewing times starting from 7:00 PM local time, and in Asia, the moon will be visible from 8:00 PM local time, with the best views expected a few hours after sunset.

In addition to the supermoon, stargazers will also be treated to the Leonid meteor shower, which will peak on Saturday night, offering a chance to see anywhere from a hundred to thousands of meteors whizzing through the sky.

Don’t miss this rare astronomical event! Grab your binoculars or simply step outside to witness the final supermoon of the year in all its glory.

Are you planning to watch it?

  • Find an open area away from city lights for the best viewing experience.
  • Use binoculars or a telescope for an enhanced view and to take in the moon’s craters and surface details.
  • Take photographs to capture the moment, but consider using a tripod for stable shots.

As the supermoon approaches its final appearance tonight, communities are encouraged to partake in related events, including star-gazing outings and educational programs hosted by local astronomy groups.

People are being encouraged to step outside this evening and prepare to be awed by the beauty of Supermoon 2024.
