ECTEL honours seven dominicans

Former Prime Minister Roosevelt 'Rosie' Douglas

Seven Dominicans including former Minister of Telecommunications Reginald Austrie have been honoured for their works in the telecommunications sector in the OECS.

Last night, the Eastern Caribbean Telecommunications Authority (ECTEL) in celebrating its 10th anniversary held a ceremony at the Fort Young Hotel to honour these persons.

Chairman of the Integrity Commission Julian Johnson, telecoms director Sylvester Cadette, former permanent secretary Jenifer Astaphan and the late Roosevelt Douglas were among those recognised.

Telecommunications Minister Ambrose George, who addressed the ceremony, commended ECTEL and the NTRC for “having transformed the sector  through a proper and transparent regime”.

He spoke of the organisation’s development of new and revised regulations to govern the sector among its other achievements.

Who is the reason why every body walking around with two or more cell phones today?
Who went all the way to the Privy council to fight the Cables monopoly?
Who is the reason why telephone rates have tumbled in Dominica and the region?
Ron Abraham should have headed the list..
Because of Ron Abraham and Marpin Telecoms, ECTEL and NTRC exists today.

Well Earl Williams may have turned out o be a major disappointment but we really should give him credit and the UWP for spearheading the fight on Marpin’s side for the freeing up of the telecommunication sector not only in Dominica but the region. Mr Austrie did a lot too but only after he took over from Pierro when Roosie died. Logic says Pierro should have gotten and so should Edison James.

On the other hand awards are not given to deserving people in Dominica except those given by the Cultural Division. Most of the awards go to Party Hacks. Look at the independence awards given to those for education. Cannot say what was their outstanding achievement at all except being freedomites who helped form DAT to weaken PSU.

    Hello ECTEL

Could someone tell me why was Ron Abraham not given an award? This is one of the Individuals who have brought us where we are today. It also meant that he sacrificed his dream as well.
