Minister for Information, Science, Telecommunications and Technology, Kelver Darroux has announced that all systems still in place for the official launch of wireless access in the Botanical Gardens.
The project is being done through the National Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (NTRC).
“All systems are still in place for that and I believe that we have set a new date for the 23rd of October to have the official launch of that programme,” Darroux said.
According to him the programme was air-marked to have been launched on Friday 28th August, however following the passage of Tropical Storm Erika, it was postponed.
Darroux said the programme will will create the perfect opportunity for students to use their new tablets, which are now being distributed by the government.
“So again it is another opportunity for our students to have the tablets now to utilize it in a conducive environment for studies and research… also Dominicans on a whole,” Darroux said. “We have to be aware that the world that we are living in, there is nothing we can do about it, the technology is everywhere, we cannot hide away from it.”
Eh ben weh nothing is straight forward in Dominica, Everything becomes an issue. Come on are you not educated people. Put your energy in something constructive.
Frankly speaking I believe this is good news but there is already WIFI at the Botanical Gardens. What is needed is a name change to Roseau City Park
Air marked??
So long the gardens have wireless access, what kind of stale news that DNO.!! get fact straight
the same thing i checking. Well to be fair not the entire gardens. There are some dark spots
I do hope that some filters are going to be placed on these tablets IP addresses…….. for these students and bravo to the politicians for acquiring their votes from these students as young as 14 years old…just remember they will be 18 by the time next election comes along…….sing a song…….
the Gardens already has wireless internet wii
Ha, now we will see school kids with their labour tablets flocking to the Garden at lunch time, and after school like crows. Mothers, if you wan to find your child, is in the Botanical Garden it will be!
underground wiring island wide…step by step…..God Bless the nature isle
the place already has wireless. all summer there has been wireless.
i think free wireless should be put in the public library next to DBS since it is one of two places children goes to study
There is free wireless at the Public Library. Get that straight!!
Great Initiative. But we need to make the Botanic Gardens a safe place for everybody esp. our young people. If they are all over the place accessing Wi-Fi we need to bear the predators in mind. Just saying
The Botanic Gardens are not at all making the most of their resources. It is a beautiful serene place, and attracts many cruise ship visitors and tourists.
I have been there many times, and every time, I think it would be great to have a little cafe with local drinks and snacks. Also, there should be more than 2 parrots which are sectioned off part of the year. There could be agouti, many different birds, iguanas, pigmy goats, rabbits and all kinds of animals making up a petting zoo.
And a shop selling crafts, plants and seeds, a flower garden, fish pond, children’s playground – the possibilities are endless.
As well as better picnic tables and benches and information about the island.
In the days of increased Internet use and TripAdvisor reviews, Dominica needs to step up if they want tourism.
Dear Sandw,
Thanks for the comment regarding the Botanic Gardens and the main ideas you have brought up.
Your idea seems to be turning the gardens to a wildlife park etc. A botanical Gardens by no mean is a wildlife pack.
2. If you want drinks etc you can find (Darvina) whom sells during the tourist season and crafts etc.
3. There are 4 pairs of parrots available to the public. you can not separate them as parrot move as pairs etc.
4. plants and seeds, a flower garden, fish pond are already in the gardens. I guess you have not been using the gardens properly.
plants/seeds/flowers can be brought down by Agriculture. Flower garden is near the parrot. and the fish pond is near the interpretation building (bright green painted building).
Thanks for your comment, really appreciated
Lighting is great then people will want to access the gardens at night, our people are not ready,
Wireless coming to Botanic Gardens!!!!!! a very controversial area of discuss because on one hand there is the issue of access to IT technology which must be welcomed (albeit there are examples in more developed countries, and based on health concerns, have gone ahead and discontinued wireless services within public schools and opted for broad band fiber optics).. but on the other hand there is also the scientific evidence and the ecological issue of the negative effect of wireless devices emitting radio frequency signals which can potentially cause a decline in animal (bird & insects & small mammals) population, reduction of some species’ useful territory and deterioration of plant health IN THE BG, the only extensive green space within the capital city… and as such the long term consequence has to be factored into the equation. The intent is indeed positive but still examples like these highlights how strong a pillar is ecological sustainability in our overall national…
Great initiative. How about some lighting now?
Solar-powered lighting has come a very long way.
Very Good however you first have to understand the importance of a Botanical Gardens and the Ecological roll it places. The gardens at night is the home for many bird species etc. Lighting up the gardens will now affect theses animal species.
So my question to you, is it really worth it, affecting what makes us the nature isle?
My take, there’s already few lamp pollst, that’s enough of light. The WIFI is for persons using the gardens during the day, school kids come and access to do school research etc not to come and chill out at night etc.
