Three days following the resignation of Lennox Linton as leader of the opposition United Workers Party (UWP), the Marigot parliamentary representative has broken his silence on the matter hinting at discord among his party as well as the need for change as his reason for his departure from the party’s helm.
In a public statement via his Facebook page, Linton said, his resignation from the post of political leader of UWP emerged from the national yearning for change “that is a must. For real change that people, especially the youth can believe in.”
“I stepped up to the responsibility of political leadership in response to the need for change. I served in the responsibility of political leadership, on the agenda for change. I have stepped down from the responsibility of political leadership in the embrace of change,” he voiced.
According to the Marigot MP, his relationship with the party was never “till death do us part,” but instead to make meaningful change for all.
Linton posited that political parties and their leadership who are sincerely committed to improving the quality of life for all must periodically rethink policies, renew systems, and rebuild organizational structures to remain relevant and fit for purpose.
While he stated that all political parties have their challenges with infighting and leadership succession, he disclosed that the UWP is no exception.
“In democracies, where people enjoy the inalienable right to decide who they want to be, while at the same time dictating who others should be, no political party has any monopoly on these disruptive behaviors within the party, that hurt leadership efforts and injury the party’s image as an honest agent of change,” Linton voiced.
He added, “still, a house divided under itself cannot stand and it is in the balance between democratic freedoms and the discipline for collective leadership responsibility that eludes us from time to time.”
The former radio talk show host and journalist contends that his journey during the past nine years has not been without its challenges in his effort to usher in the benefits of change to secure the best Dominica for all Dominicans.
“Dominica is hurting,” he says, “joblessness, worsening poverty, spiraling dependency, and relentless attacks on the freedom of the human spirit are destroying the right to lives that matter. A people deprived by the government of the means to meet their needs are imprisoned behind the bars of those unmet needs.”
While he believes that the Opposition’s quest to gain power has been unsuccessful due to an unlevel playing field, he alluded to betrayal within his own party for his defeat.
“And yes, there has been the infighting, the vilification from within, the backstabbing and the treachery, but I’m alive, I survived to stand aside, to continue to serve, committed to secure a course correction so that the leadership of the party going forward is protected from similar impediments to ensuring that Dominica is on the ballot, and not the parties and interests we define in mindless prejudice, of colors. It’s time for change.”
Linton says he is hopeful that his resignation presses the leadership reset button, on the clear understanding that living for others, is a rule of nature and “ if there is no enemy within, the enemy outside can do us no harm. Let this be a moment of new energy, enthusiasm, and commitment to the movement for change that is to be, the change that begins between you and me. In all of us, for each of us, and in each of us, for all of us,” he encouraged.
In his parting words, he thanked his family and supporters and gave the assurance that he will continue his effort to create a better Dominica.
“I did not come into this cause for Dominica that needs assistance, as political leader of UWP or any other party. I came to serve and I’m privileged to have been in the position to serve at the level of political leader of the United Workers Party. The United Workers Party needs something different right now.”
I think that Lennox is finally worn out after all the upheaval of the years with no real progress. He has reached his breaking point and it is time for someone else to lead who might get a break through. The problem is finding the right person with integrity and toughness.

There is a bit of history involved here; we don’t speak patios, neither do we drag our way of speaking, our history dates back beyond the 1700’s and into the early 1950’s when people from the islands of Antigua St. Kitts, Nevis, Anguilla and Montserrat came to work on the Estates around Wesley and Marigot when Dominica was progressive. Some people also came from Barbados and Guyana; they spoke no patios.
So, we from Marigot and Wesley inherited our accent from the early foreign settlers to our villages.
As a matter of fact, those people from the Leward islands practically created Marigot and Wesley; actually, Marigot more than Wesley.

It with great relief that i say , Lennox Linton should have resigned a long time ago. His oratorical flourishes are arguably unmatched but his intellectual dishonesty is palpable. He invariably minimizes the progress of the DLP while exaggerating their missteps or failures out of context. A true statesman would praise where praise is due, criticize constructively when warranted, not to mention his “Dominica bashing overseas.” You may not agree with the CBI, but one cannot argue that it didnt save Dominica from a more catstrophic economic event post hurricane Maria. The economist has the knowledge base and temperament to deal with the rat race rigors of politics in Dominica. He is well read, travelled and is a real PHD with local, regional and international working experience.
All Dominicans should rally around Thomson and pray for his fortitude and soul as he will be making his move to rescue Dominica.
Mr. Thomson Fontaine is a knowledgeable, astute, respected and morally sound person. Most governments would be ecstatic to have him on their team.
However, he is much too low-keyed and lacklustered to be an inspirational and motivational leader to galvanize the people into taking action for a good cause. Not all men were born to be leaders despite their intellectual prowess.
At this critical moment of crisis, the party needs an inspirational leader, and people of impeccable character that can be trusted to lend this leader their full and unwavering support. Trust is an important ingredient for success.
Calling on Dr. Thompson Fontaine! Sir will you please heed to the call? If it is true that the Hon. Linton is leaving VOLUNTARILY then you are the chosen one sir. But as you well know, it’s not going to be easy and the ruthless Cabal will try harder to convict and imprison you with that case they have hanging over your head. Hence, this too may become a major distraction thus creating an impediment that the UWP’s recovery process may not be able to successfully weather before the next election. Again, I am not against him in any way shape or form. I think he could be a great leader, but first he has to be able to beat the DLP.
That will not happen. Fontaine does not have the political acumen to win over the people and succeed in Government. He is another boom boom fly like Lennox was.
but does he have the charisma to pull the people. One thing to be brilliant another thing to be a people person.
My question is who will be the brave soul to take up the mantle. Many say Clement Marcellin is the best. While i say maybe, i advise that the party look into finding new candidates.
Clement as leader i dont think this will happen, his behavior in parliament is disgusting.
