Dominica is one of seven Caribbean countries in the pilot phase of the “Total Visitor Satisfaction” (TVS) survey.

The Total Visitor Satisfaction survey, which measures visitor satisfaction in 7 service sectors including Accommodation, Sites & Attractions, and Safety & Security, is part of a Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) initiative aimed towards having totally satisfied visitors in the Caribbean destinations.

On August 28 and 29, Dr. Afzal Abdool, the CTO consultant with the TVS programme, met with Director of Tourism, Colin Piper, and research and statistics staff representatives from Discover Dominica Authority, Central Statistical Office, and Ministry of Tourism, as well as the enumerators who will conduct the interviews, to present the details of the pilot phase.

The results from the pilot phase will be presented during the Caribbean State of the Industry Conference in October in St. Kitts.

Tourisim plays a vital part in countries like Dominica if we are to get out into the world. It is factual that we have many sites of natural beauty; we, the locals need to appreciate those natural sites, by keeping them clean and secure for visitors who come around, if we are to uphold the commendations we are receiving so far.

We ought not to forget that most of the reasons people from other countries choose to leave their homes to visit countries like Dominica is because they are searching for the kind of relaxation that they may not have in their own homes/countries–regardless of their height of wealth and other material assets; for all of that is vanity that does not bring them the peace and tranquility which they want in their minds.

But whilst they are here with us, they will need “food” “entertainment” “cleanness” and “refreshness” among other aspects, which make a visitor feel satisfied to choose us as there vacationing venue.

Even if we will want to serve some of our own “local dishes”, most people would like to eat of their own kind of foods, for at least once or twice, whilst they are away from home.

If we are going to continue advancing in serving people from away, that they might want to return to spend their free time with us–we have to start taking considerable time to learn about the different people–in regards to what they eat at breakfast, lunch, and supper time; what they enjoy for entertainment–before bedtime–and of course, anytime they want to just simply relax.

We do not have very many beaches, but for the few we have, the Ministry of Tourism, has be concerned about the surrounding of our few beaches.

We need proper “changing rooms” and
“washrooms/toilets” at least at our popular beaches in Dominica–which should be kept clean for those who come to use them–especially our tourists.

Those people are not used to undressing and dressing right on the shores of the water as we, the locals do in Dominica. When people write they only speak the positive, but there are many negatives which remains in the dark.

Let us do the concrete research that will give us the concrete resolution for the benifit of our tourist industry in Dominica–as we move on from number 7 to number 1, and to remain in that spot     .

Let’s hope this helps us and we get positive reviews. However, it will show us where we need to improve and we take it in good spirit. All positive, no negative.

This is a long overdue mechanism as it will provide concrete quantitative and qualitative date as regards trends, ect. The interested parties in the tourism industry will now be better positioned as to where to spend limited resources.
