In search of a junior tourism minister

Dominica's 2011 Junior Tourism Minister Kitwanie Carbon

Dominica’s next junior tourism minister is about to be selected, and he or she will come from one of the island’s secondary schools.

Eleven secondary school students will take part in Discover Dominica Authority’s (DDA) annual Tourism Youth Congress where that matter will be settled.

The DDA says the Congress is mirrored on that organized by the Caribbean Tourism Organization and seeks to develop students’ ability to prepare and present speeches.

In Round 1 of the competition, each student will speak for three minutes on the topic What is the impact of vagrancy on tourism?  What options do we have for dealing with vagrancy and tourist harassment in Dominica?

The top five students of the first round will advance to Round Two and present on the topic:  Your community, the next tourist paradise?

The winning student will represent Dominica at the Caribbean Tourism Organization’s Tourism Youth Congress in St. Kitts and Nevis in October 2012.

Miss Kitwanie Carbon, winner of the Tourism Youth Congress in 2011, was the winner of the regional competition held in September 2011.  Miss Carbon is expected to serve as chairperson at the regional Congress in St. Kitts in October this year.

Participating schools in this year’s local event in keeping with the observance of Tourism Awareness Month here are: Goodwill Secondary School, Pierre Charles Secondary School, Portsmouth Secondary School, Castle Bruce Secondary School, North East Comprehensive School, Convent High School, Dominica Grammar School, Dominica Community High School, Wesley High School, Orion Academy and the Saint Mary’s Academy.

why do you loose your time on such stupid things as junior tourism minister, carbon competition etc while the island have really serious issues: rise of the crime, absence of normal regulation, badly equipped police force, pre-historical healthcare system and disabled educational system as well as sky-high unemployment…
