Dominica expects to welcome the MV Discovery of Discovery Cruises at the Woodbridge Bay pier on Wednesday, December 1st, 2010.

This is the ship’s only call to Dominica for the 2010/2011 cruise season.

This liner carries 698 passengers and 180 crew. It is 168.74m long with a GRT of 20,186.

The ship’s port of registry is the United Kingdom and is scheduled to call in at St. Kitts prior to Dominica.  From Dominica the ship sails to St. Lucia.

A brief ceremony with government officials, tourism stakeholders and representatives from the Discover Dominica Authority is expected to take place aboard the ship at 10: 30 am.

This is the third inaugural call for the 2010/2011 cruise season with three more expected.

Cruise tourism is a major component of Dominica’s growing tourism sector: 546’487 cruise passengers (275 cruise ship calls) visited Dominica during the 2009-2010 cruise ship season.

Approximately 237 cruise ships are expected to call at Dominica during the 2010/2011 season, bringing nearly 451,141 visitors to the island.

Good news for “THE ONLY CALL” for the season… What’s so very “good” here. Guide me. How many of the six hundred odd persons will actually disembark and spend some real cash in Dominica? That I would like to know first.

So why when the Government do good you does hardly hear people saying they do good. But from the moment that something is done / goes wrong all hell does break loose.

Cruise Tourism is the major component of our tourism. More than 80% of our total visitors are cruise tourists

Most of the merchants and locals don’t make a lot of money off the cruise ship traffic. Only certain tours are able to profit.
