MV Queen Mary II makes another visit to Dominica

Roseau, Dominica –  The internationally famous MV Queen Mary II docked alongside the Roseau Cruise Ship Berth in Dominica on Wednesday, December 30, 2009, one of the few ports in the Caribbean region that can accommodate this vessel.

The Passenger capacity of the MV Queen Mary II of Cunard & P & O Cruises is 2444. It has a gross tonnage of 148,528. The ship originates from the United Kingdom.

This is the only call that the ship will make to Dominica during this 2009/2010 cruise ship season. The ship is captained by Mr. Bernard Warner.

This is very nice. I am surprised that the Roseau berth is deep enough fr such a ship. Bravo, I hope the visitors spent a grip on trinkets tours and restaurants.

Typical Dominican BS……….Always will find negatives when positives are being promoted. The size of the ship was not the main point of the article, but its stature.

  7. Don't attack the messenger about QM2 size and new bigger ships replacing it!
    January 4, 2010

Typical Dominica behaviour on attacking the messenger and not reading the message.

Dominica cannot accomodate the new class of mega ships like Oasis of the Seas, Freedom of the Seas because the dock at Roseau and Portsmouth are too small in size and too shallow.

Dominica needs to upgrade its existing infrastructure ASAP or its in the losing end of this game of tourism.

Yes the media needs to ask the Ministry of Tourism what is its plans if any it to accomodate this ships. The media has a job to do to look for problems and bring them to politicians attention, inform the masses in Dominica.

We must give all governments constructive criticism. We cannot sing praises all the time, If we praised all the time, nothing would get done in Dominica! Thats why there is intelligent ppl asking questions that need answers.

There is a reason why this country is backwards, ppl get offended when you point out the issues, fact and figures.

Queen Mary 2 was at one time something we could boast about like the “Worlds longest, tallest, biggest, largest) cruiseship built docking in Dominica but that time has long gone my friends. What is important for Dominica is our future, not our past.

I contribute to my country and i don’t depend on the politicians as some Dominicans do for all aspects of their lives.

When Oasis of the Seas, Freedom of the Seas and the new mega ships dock in Roseau I will praise the Government but until then I will keep on pointing out the poor planning and lack of foresight that we have now.

if most of the ppl on board were enticed to disembark the ship then i would say that your tourism future is radiant. but that’s not what happens. the plurality stays.why? i don’t know, maybe we aren’t marketing the country effectively to capture the foreigner interest.

“QM2 is not the “Worlds biggest, largest, longest, tallest cruiseship” anymore Dominicans!” -your ignorance is appalling. No where in the article did they claim that this particular cruise ship was the largest. Its quite obvious that as time goes on, and technology changes, and new advancements come around that the cruise ships, like everything else will change. It was just worth noting that this is in fact a prestigious cruise line, and it was indeed a great honor to have it in our port. The article mentioned that we are one of the few islands that can house a ship of such dimensions – therefore we have more hope over the other islands of being able to house the bigger ones that have just been built and those coming. Instead of ridiculing, and being such a pessimist, take time to appreciate your country or try to help make the difference!

Do we really need an international airport when these huge oceangoing liners are doing the same job as several jumbo jets,, i don’t think so, and i dearsay much safer too…

It is pleasing to have such a prestigious VESSEL in our Ports, with such a large passenger carriage, it is hoped in the future, the tourism revenue will be greatly increased when such vessels continue to make those visits. It is also hoped that the cruiseship berth in Portsmouth will be used to its fullness in the near future.

  15. QM2 is not the "Worlds biggest, largest, longest, tallest cruiseship" anymore Dominicans!
    January 4, 2010

I think the media needs to do some serious research, The Queen Mary the 2nd is no longer the Worlds largest, longest, tallest ship in the World. It lost that title to the Freedom of the Seas\Liberty of the Seas\Indpendence of the Seas and more recently Oasis of the Seas all operated by Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines.

Dominica’s cruise ship ports\terminals can’t handle the new class of super cruise ships due to size. Cruise Ships are getting bigger and bigger than before.

Noregian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Epic set to sail in May 2010 will have a passenger capacity of 4200 Passengers, Carnival Cruise Lines newest ship Carnival Dream with a passenger capacity of 3646. There is no limit to cruise ship size, they will get bigger and bigger.

Since our ports’s can’t handle these new ships we are losing out in the cruise tourism game if we can only handle smaller, older ships.

    TO Mouth of the South,

the mv mary could not dock the very first time because according to its requirements the area was too shallow. But much work have been done since which included alot of underwater dredging according to Port Authority News. So big things are happening in our country. Happy you are checking in though to see whats happening. As for me, some of us just have to stay at home! God bless you.

Excellent for Dominica. Hope it comes more frequently. We are getting the tourists and we need to keep them. And so we need to do our part in making Roseau a more comfortable city for families and for tourism on a whole
