The Dominica Labour Party Government (DLP) has reiterated its commitment to developing the Tourism sector as one of the drivers of national economic activity and diversification.

The DLP’s 2014 general elections manifesto has outlined several initiatives to be implemented by government and has described Tourism as a high priority sector, based on the country’s natural and cultural resources upon which to develop a sustainable industry.

Prime Minister of Dominica the Honourable Roosevelt Skerrit has stated that Tourism has been identified as a growth industry and has set a target for Tourism to account for fifteen percent (15%) of the country’s gross domestic product.

“In order to achieve this goal we have drawn up and started the implementation the Tourism Master Plan of 2013. At the centre of the plan is the commitment to diversify our tourism product. Hence, eco-tourism has been, and will continue to be, supported by educational tourism, cultural tourism, heritage tourism and sports tourism. The environment for investing in Tourism will be improved. Dominica will become more visitor-friendly with the Roseau Renewal and the Portsmouth Enhancement Projects. Once again, the Dominica State College will establish a new faculty to provide students with the necessary skills to boost the Hospitality sector,” Prime Minister Skerrit stated.

Senator the Honourable Robert Tonge has been given the portfolio of Tourism and Urban Renewal in the new DLP Administration. Several projects including hotel developments in Portsmouth and on the site of the old Public Works Garage, the construction of an international airport and the Roseau Renewal and Portsmouth Enhancement Projects are part of government’s plans to improve the Tourism product.

Cuba is opening. Tourism will drop dramatically in all the islands south of Cuba. The Chinese have built a $3.4 billion mega resort in the Bahamas. Only cruise ship passengers will come. No one from Canada or the USA will bother to travel this far. even the Dominican Republis is worried about Cuba opening to the US market and the Canadians fly into Miami and poof into Havana.

MR SKERRIT SHOULD STOP TALKING FOR THE SAKE OF IT. ECO TOURISM IS THE EXACT OPPOSITE TO MASS TOURISM WHICH CATERS TO SAND, SEA AND SUN TOURISTS….. SO PROJECT SUCH AS THE HOTEL AT THE PUBLIC WORKS AND THE RESORTS ON THE BEACH AT PORTSMOUTH ARE NOT ECO TOURISM PROJECTS. ECO TOURISTS SEEK SMALL SCALE, ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY, BOUTIQUE HOTELS WHICH RESPECT NATURE AND BLEND INTO THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT… SUCH AS ROSALIE RESORT, JUNGLE BAY RESORT AND SECRET BAY RESORT… TOURISM IN DOMINICA WILL NEVER TAKE OFF BECAUSE THE POLICY MAKERS DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT THE POLICY STATES….

Roseau needs to be abandon as the capital city or demolished and re- erected with focus on modern facilities. I have identified the area in canefield – industrial area all the way back as the new area to erect a modern day capital…..New Roseau vs Old Roseau ( that way the historic part of Roseau stays . These are the drastic changes that are needed , no band aid on roseau – bad roads, stinky gutters etc..

PM you have a Minister of Tourism let him speak.

You have already started to micro-managed Mr. Tonge new role.

Mister Tonge, I am happy you step forward but I hope you have cemented in your mind the principle things you will not accept including micro- management of your Ministry by the PM.
So when they present themselves and you are unable to address them, you can walk away from the position.

Which of the places do not have sidewalks? Are you referring to Roseau? Goodwill area and Pottersville also never had sidewalks. I foresee if sidewalks are to be constructed how much money it will cost the government.

    • December 18, 2014

      To Badmind.

Hello and good morning my people. We all know that the sidewalks in Roseau need major work to make them safe. No one should wish that someone get hurt just to sue our Government regardless of party Affliation. The money comes from the tax payers.
