Tourism Month ends with award ceremony

Calibishie Lodges receives award for Accomodation of the Year

The Ministry of Tourism and the Discover Dominica Authority (DDA), this morning, closed the curtains on Tourism Awareness Month with the 2011 Tourism Industry Awards Ceremony at the Fort Young Hotel.

CEO of DDA, Mr Colin Piper, highlighted some of the activities that made the month a resounding success, including Hike Fest, the Roseau Paint-A-Thon and community fests like Marigot’s May Fest, as well as the emphasis on education during the month.

“Tourism Awareness Month 2011 embraced education as well. The Tourism Youth Congress challenged 11 students from the various secondary schools across the island. The exceptional level of intelligence exuded by the youth of Dominica, as they expressed their opinions and concerns about realities and the future of our tourism product, was simply spell-binding. It is these types of engagements that instill the sense of ownership in our children and sustainability of our tourism product and our country, by extension, depends greatly on it,” Piper remarked.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism and Legal Affairs, Mrs Claudia Bellot, believes that the activities of Tourism Awareness Month have impacted various segments of the population and will remain a permanent part of Dominica’s annual calendar

She said, “The success ratings of the various activities for Tourism Awareness Month will certainly ensure that these activities secure pride of place in the annual calendar, while the interest which has been generated has spawned many new ideas, which will form part of your future programs. I am sure that many of these activities will also serve to broaden the scope of the activities and attract greater and sustained participation and impact.”

At the ceremony, a number of stakeholders were awarded in various aspects of Dominica’s tourism product and the winners of the competitive activities that formed part of Tourism Awareness Month were awarded their prizes.

I think that DDA and Colin Piper need to practice the very motto that they promote – I am Dominica.

The Fort Young Hotel is NOT the only hotel in Dominica. Why do they continue to have every single function of prominence there – is it that Dominica’s other hotels just don’t make the grade? I really do want to know – or is it a directive from higher up that the former dollar minister must continue to be compensated for his time in office?

I think that right now – Dominica needs and entire year of awareness – not just a month….
