Two Dominican female cricketers head to South Africa to represent West Indies at Youth World Cup

(L-R) Abini St.Jean and Earnisha Fontaine

Two young Dominican female cricketers are included in a 15-member West Indies Women’s Under 19 Rising Stars squad, who travelled to South Africa to compete in the ICC Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup.

Abini St.Jean and Earnisha Fontaine left the state on January 1, 2023, to join the West Indies U-19 women’s cricket squad, which will play in the inaugural ICC youth event later this month.

At a send-off ceremony for the young athletes this past Friday, held at the Billy Doctrove Pavilion at the Windsor Park Stadium, Minister of State in the Ministry of Culture, Youth, Sports, and Community Development, with specific responsibility for Youth and Sports, Senator Oscar George, was on hand to share encouragements with the young cricketers and wishing them well on the tour.

The Sports Division and Dominica Cricket Association (DCA) also congratulated the young women on their selection, and Coach Sam Kirnon for making sure the girls were ready.

It was just last month that the Cricket West Indies (CWI) Selection Panel named the 15-member West Indies Women’s Under 19 Rising Stars squad which is being led by batting all-rounder Ashmini Munisar who captained the team on their tours to the USA in August, and November in India.

According to the Lead Selector Mrs. Ann Browne-John, “The Under 19 girls T20 World Cup will be a historic event being the first of its kind in women’s international cricket.”

“We’ve held training camps over the past few months and the preparation will culminate with a final camp to be held in Antigua this month. This international exposure would no doubt be extremely beneficial, not only to this group of players but also serve as an investment and feeder group into the senior West Indies Women’s set up,” she added.

The ICC Women’s U19 T20 World Cup will feature 41 matches played from January 14 to 29, in South Africa. The official warm-up matches will be from January 9 to 11. The 16 participating teams will play in four groups in the preliminary round.

West Indies have been drawn in Group C alongside New Zealand, Ireland, and Indonesia and their match schedule is as follows:

Sunday, January 15: vs Ireland at NW University, Potchefstroom – 4 AM Eastern Caribbean Time.

Tuesday, January 17: vs Indonesia at NW University, Potchefstroom – 7:45 AM Eastern Caribbean Time.

Thursday, January 19: vs New Zealand at JB Marks Oval, Potchefstroom – 7:45 AM Eastern Caribbean Time.

Massive congratulations to you both. This is a monumental achievement. Now go out on the field of play and perform to the best of your ability to maintain your inclusion in the team. In other words, make the very best of this opportunity.

Good luck girls!!! The whole of Dominica is supporting you.

Congratulations girls on your selection. Hope you perform well and do Dominica and yourselves proud. However I’m not sure how effective you will be on the pitch in these tight jeans. Hope West Indies management provide the team with proper sports clothing.

Hope I did not sound too misogynistic in pointing out the unsuitability of the tight jeans worn by the two women in the photo with their West Indies team top. Obviously it would be their casual wear off the field. I wouldn’t think for one second that they would be on the field in these tight jeans, but for the purpose of promoting women participation in sporting activities they should have been pictured in their proper sporting outfits and not portrayed as modelling casual wear. Whenever you see photos of West Indies men heading off to represent the West Indies team they are always portrayed in their official sporting apparel. Just saying!

How do you know that their jeans are tight? There are stretch jeans with such fitting. These ladies look fabulous. You need to redirect your mind and give women, ladies and young girls a break. Men too like to tell women what to do. But where did we men got that from nuh??? I hope your pants are ok and that you change them regularly. You seem to be very jealous of these fine looking ladies. Ladies, take my advice, do not return to Dominica. Stay in Africa and start a new life. You’ll be happier there. Africa is your country; we don’t know who Dominica belongs too.

So very happy for the two young ladies. I do hope that they will do their best to advance to higher heights. There’s’ a lot of financial income in cricket and I urge many other young boys and girls in Dominica to forge a way out somewhere somehow and get into cricket. May the two young ladies lead the way. Roosevelt Chichi Skerrit and his NEP system will NOT do it for you. He’s a BIG failure. He did promise an increase in NEP wages, but I hope that your wait will not become too heavy. Once again ladies’ good luck and we will follow your progress.

Which villages are they from, may I ask? I think it is very important to know what villages they hail from. Thanks. Hail the women. Congrats and do well on your short tour.

Dormant Sense aka ds, it is not so important as to what village (s) the women hail from. They are Dominicans who are representing the West-Indies team. Have you asked that of every cricketer?

      • January 6, 2023

We would like to know if they hail from g walls’ village. That way we can congratulate g walls for something good coming out of his village for once.

I wish you all success in your endeavors. Howbeit, remember that you are traveling to the Mother Land – So my advice to you all is don’t come to this island of Dominica. Stay with your ancestors and live harmoniously. My tribe is from Zambia 🇿🇲. Very nice and intelligent people.
