WEATHER UPDATE: Hurricane Jose intensifies to Category 3

At 5 pm, Jose intensified to a Category 3 hurricane near latitude 15.5 degrees north and longitude 52.4 degrees west or about 590 miles east of the Lesser Antilles.

Interests in Dominica are advised to monitor the progress of Hurricane Jose and to make the necessary preparations as the system moves closer to the Leeward Islands.

The concern for Dominica at this time is possible impacts associated with feeder bands from Hurricane Jose. The current projection is for an increase in cloudiness, showers and thunderstorms, which could be moderate to heavy at times and gusty winds, by Friday afternoon and particularly on Saturday.

A flood watch or warning may be issued for Dominica by Friday Afternoon.

Meanwhile, the latest weather outlook for Dominica predicts that lingering moisture and instability will continue to produce cloudiness, scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms across parts of the island chain during the next 12 to 24 hours.

Persons in areas prone to flooding, landslides and falling rocks are advised to continue to exercise caution.

Moderate seas are expected during the next 12 hours with waves peaking near 8.0 feet. Small craft operators and sea bathers should continue to exercise caution. A further increase to peak between 10.0 to 12.0 feet is expected thereafter.
