The family of Scott Hapgood — the UBS banker accused of manslaughter in the death of an Anguilla hotel worker — released a lengthy statement Thursday claiming that “our dream vacation turned into a chilling nightmare” and a “literal fight to survive.”
The statement claims, “When Scott and our family went on vacation, we never thought he would end up defending himself and our young children against an armed intruder.” The Connecticut family also released a photo allegedly taken after the attack showing the strapping Hapgood with a bloodied face and chest.
Hapgood’s been accused by Anguillan authorities of killing a staff member, Kenny Mitchel, at the luxury Malliouhana resort on April 13 in his room. But the Darien banker has claimed via his reps that it was a case of “self-defense to protect the lives of his young daughters and himself.” The case has caused outrage among many locals who claim Hapgood was given special treatment as a wealthy tourist, as he was jailed but then allowed to post bail and leave the island. Rumors and speculation surrounding the case have popped up on social media sites, including comments on the Royal Anguilla Police Force’s Facebook page.
Dead men tell no tales. Children will not talk. Wife is standing by her man. Hagood making more and more excuses as to WHAT TRULY happened in that hotel room. It is really ad that Mitchel is not here to defend himself; he deserved that chance. It is in the hands of the Law and GOD to decide what to do with that man. A bruised face does not mean that he attacked you. It could mean that he was defending himself AGAINST you, in the process, clawing and biting the heck out of you in order to save HIS LIFE.

Why do you repeat and regurgitate the same story that has already been carried in the NY Post? Your readers need new stuff. How about doing an interview with the victim’s family in Dominica? Go out there and interview them as he is from Dominica.
You should have no problems in doing so as you are based in Dominica. Get an exclusive interview with the family which you can feature in your publication. The same way the accused family can release statements to the media is the same way the victim’s family should be doing the same. Please don’t say they will not speak to your online outfit without even trying to get an interview with them. Get your own story and please stop lifting stuff that has already appeared elsewhere.Get a new angle.
i haven’t heard the government of Dominica release any statement on that matter, I spoke to a minister about it, his response was, the government do not know the circumstances surrounding the matter, so therefore the government cannot make any statement. Can you people believe that? I said to him if it were the other way around what would the government have said? A white man kill a black Dominican man and we have nothing to say? If it was the black boy who killed the white American man, America would jump quickly to look for him, and even try to defend him, whether they know the circumstances or not, but no its a poor BLACK man,” choo poull “
It’s a very sad story and the only witness is the one charged with the murder. I feel very sorry for the family of the deceased and I pray God’s strength over them during this difficult time.
It is also important to note that I have not heard anything from our government or local police. I was hoping the local authorities would call their counterpart in Anguilla in an effort to get the truth but then again our local authorities must be concerned themselves because they know how they have treated the drowning of the Haitians as if to suggest they protecting somebody bigger than them. That is if they even informed the families of those Haitians that they perished so at least, they could have a wake for them. Family members must be thinking their loved ones busy working in Dominica not knowing they are deceased. I know we have a lot of Haitians here but they too cannot even tell their friends in Haiti because our authorities are tight lipped about it. So sad boy

If a hotel worker is going to steal from you they’ll wait until nobody’s in the room and sneak in with the pass key. They don’t strong arm you in front of four witnesses.
In investigations like these I would think the investigating officers took their own pics, so its OK for him to post his.. Will it be match those of d police? Let’s wait and see
So why is now alone them pictures coming out, why did you not release the pics right after. Also the hotel should release a statement saying whether or not you called the front desk asking for the young man to put the stories to rest, at least that part of the story. I all suspect an under the table money might pass. Free on earth but not free with God.

I know a man is innocent before he is proven guilty but one look at this picture tells me by sheer instincts, this man has an issue towards black men.

The word hold indicates someone holding on to something!

There is something that doesn’t add up right. If I was to guess, I would say that there was some type of interaction going on with the children and Mitchel and Hapgood walked in and flew into a rage. If there was a plumbing check, someone in maintenance had to have sent Mitchel to the room, so someone should know something about it. Also, if only the kids were there, Mitchel should have waited until an adult was present to be on the safe side. The kids are probably too traumatized to tell the truth.
I suggest they knew each other, and state an opinion, DNO did not print it; but I believe it is deeper than one can imagine.
If someone came to your hotel room and told you they are there to repair a sink, or clogged drain, if you know nothing requires repair, why would you let them in?
And where was his wife and children?

I had a feeling that it was a high profile visitor. Some people believe one that because they may have come from a certain level on the socioeconomic ladder, and a certain group, that their story will be more believable; and sadly some of them are right on that. I wonder if it was the other way around if the same manner, and level of handling would have been applied; more than likely no. In this case of dead man tell no tail, we don’t know where the truth lies, only having the opportunity to hear one side.
In America, there is corruption, at the heights level; nevertheless no one is above the law regardless of their socioeconomic situation.
If you are a murderer in America, it likely that you will be granted bail as long as you can afford to post bail!
Nevertheless, when bail is posted, you traveling is restricted, travel documents are mandatory surrendered.
What we have in Anguilla is corruption in its highest form; how can you grant a foreigner vacationing on an island bail after he murdered someone, charged him with lessor charge of manslaughter, which boils down to a high misdemeanor; and put his passport in his hand and allow him to leave the island.
Someone in Anguilla got paid to let him go free.
The only two places murderers were allowed to walk free, without a trial for murder in the Caribbean, are Dominica, and Antigua!
