UWI triumphs over Dominica State College in death penalty debate

The University of the West Indies debate team proudly walked out of the school’s auditorium after beating the Dominica State College in heated debate on the use of the death penalty in the Eastern Caribbean.

Representing the University of the West Indies on the proposing side of the debate were Management studies Major Abigail Durand, Paralegal Studies major Kadisha Jno Baptiste and Management studies and Economics minor Dominique Newton. On the other hand, Secondary Education major Jose Thomas, Accounting and Economics major Donalie Dailey and Information Technology and Biology major Jernelle Jno Baptiste of the Dominica State College opposed the use of the death penalty.

Jose Thomas the first speaker for the opposing team won the prize for best speaker.

The debate’s moderator past magistrate and local attorney, Tyanni Behanzin, described the event as successful and stated that he hoped to see many more debates of that standard in the future on a regular basis.

Members of the audience were given the opportunity to engage in an open discussion on the death penalty after the debate to express their views and opinions on the topic.

Participants were awarded cash prizes.

    THE DEBATE WAS POORLY MODERATED

HE TALKED A LITTLE TOO MUCH

THE DEBATE WAS ABOUT THE STUDENTS NOT A FORMER MARGITRATE

    HOWEVER IT WAS WELL JUDGED

    BUT DSC SEEMED UNDER PREPARED

POOR USAGE OF CASE LAW AND LEGAL PRINCIPLES FROM THE OECS JURISDICTION

NO Reference was made to the recent decsions of the OECS SUPREME COURT ON THE APPLICATION OR LACK THEREOF OF THE DEATH PENALTY as far as it concerns being mainly limited in its application where there is evidence of torture of the victim.

that sounds like one of our useless lawyers attacking Behanzin. I was there and saw the whole thing, The moderator was almost invisible, he played little role apart from keeping time and telling each side when to come on, It is very tasteless to try to tarnish the man for what was a very high level of debate, in fact higher than the usual Kiwani’s shouting and screaming debate. The participants thanked Mr. Behanzin, who prepared both sides and spent a lot of his time, from what I gathered. I am from the State College and he came to the College five weeks before the debate and visited on three separate occasions to assist in our preparation. We lost due to inexperience and immaturity, but to try to say something that was clearly wrong about Behanzin’s role, then you sound like some of those lawyers who do not have the integrity and substance of Behanzin! He should be commended for his organising of this events and placing his money where his mouth clearly is!!!

So what are they are going to do with the result? Will they present it to the Prime Minister to make a decision pro and con?
I understood that the death penalty still exists in Dominica but that it has not been used for some years. They should revert to it. Too many murders have been committed in Dominica. Young and older lives have been lost, snuffed out because of wicked hearts. They have caused much sorrow in the land, sorrow among the victims’ relatives and nationals.
It is time “to put a spoke in their wheel” – an old Dominican saying. Give them their just desserts as they deserve.
Those who did not spare lives, their lives are not worth sparing. In fact, by their wicked actions, they have forfeited their life.

time to bring back the death penalty because too much crimes happening now and no real punishment for it, other than a few months in jail. what about some mothers who lose their only son, or women losing their loved ones, children losing their fathers? Dominica needs to start having justice for the victims of these senseless crimes. And criminals keep doing it because they see there is no harsh punishment. Congrats UWI :)

Great job to both the University of the West Indies and the Dominica State College – you are both winners in this debate! Amazing how in the very recent past debates at schools and other public forum were such common events. Now there are people in Dominica who believe that in the 21stCentury Dominica cannot hold public debates – or does not have the facilities for such! Well done to both educational institutions – your job is to make the impossible possible.

Well done UWI, I was hoping the proposing side for the death penalty case would have won.

Is one thing that I am certain of, an executed person never came back to commit another crime…

Then again, we talking about Dominica’s judicial system here; there is much too much money to be made in recycling criminals.

Sometimes I swear the courts and them lawyers making more money that Dowasco. LOL!

Their victims did not stand a chance even though they pleaded for their lives. Hang them or execute them! Imagine someone plotting to kill another. I thought that in Dominica, they kill and with no remorse as if it is going out of style.
It is as if people’s lives mean nothing to them and they are bailed out and free to roam the country. Is this fair to the victims and their family and fair to nationals in general? Get the noose and prepare it for hanging those heartless people!

Behanzin goes to the courts every day, so what this lawyer is full of it. The man goes to Magistrates’ Court, High Court Civil and was at the Court of Appeal on a matter, so what is this crap talk. Those lawyers who steal land for people and make birth certificates, he will be the peoples’ lawyer whether all you like it or not!!!

Dominica needs Debates and more debates then action. Pple have to realise it is ok to disagree. Debates are healthy for our democracy. We need to maintain that. I do not hate you because I disagree with u and vice versa. We can still find common ground and work together to get out country into the 21st century.

    • Justice and Truth
      November 14, 2012

It also needs action. Some people do more talking than acting. This is why nothing is solved and achieved. Too much talk and no action. They must get with it and act for the situation is crucial.

The debate was interesting; well infuse with lots of information and excellent participation by the public. I listen on Q95 and was somewhat disappointed by the quality of the live programing. Let’s hope it was recorded and it can be rebroadcast so we can get a better feel. I must thank UWI for putting such event together. It shows that we have the capability to debate subject of National importance on a high level. BLESS

True say. When there are positive things no one comments. Congratulations to the winners. The other side are winners as well. Jose Thomas did a very good performance.

    • November 13, 2012

      @neutral

You have a point! This is not the news of a killing or a normal death–so there is no need for the R.I.P comments which goes on for 4 to 5 days, adding up to hundreds of them, after that news article.

Also, it is probably because there is not much from the News Article itself, to comment about–that is my set-back.

We know that the debate would happen between the two groups; but all the article told us is who won the debate–giving the names of those who participated– and that the moderator was pleased with it; what else is there for us to write comments about? But those comments will probably come later; let us wait and see.

    • Justice and Truth
      November 14, 2012

They should have invited Clarence who killed the 75 year old to the debate then after bring him to see the body in the morgue. Then bring him back stocky to think of what he did

      • November 13, 2012

        @UWI Student

He probably has suffered enough already–that is why I have no opinion for or against the death penalty.

I just cannot imagine a person taking the Life of another in cold blood, for that person not to know the continuous torment of his and her mind.

And if not, what is the point of taking that persons Life through the death penalty? However I still believe in God’s fair justice, mercy, and compassion; whatever He has planned I know that is what will be established.

      • Justice and Truth
        November 14, 2012

They should also have invited the other one who was released, stating that the case against him is dropped. There was no case from the beginning. He was a suspect. He probably has something to hide and is not telling the truth. This may have made him deux parlez.
I am confident that something will give (as the saying) and the truth of this matter will project its ugly face and head. Let us pray for that.
