Consultant Gynecologist and Obstetrician, Dr. Ruby Blanc, has issued a challenge to graduates of the UWI Open Campus to be agents of change.
Addressing the recognition ceremony of 44 graduates at the Fort Young Hotel on Thursday, Dr. Blanc said she is worried by the negative influences that is currently plaguing the society.
“Personally I am especially alarmed at the pervasiveness of materialism, negativity, laissez-faire attitudes, and acceptance of mediocrity, general inertia and laziness, promotion of dependency and get rich quick with as little work as possible attitude that is evident all around us,” she said.
She told the graduates that as educated people, they can either choose to ignore the issues or be agents of change. “As educated persons we can choose to hide our heads in the sand or clouds as the case may be, and pretend that these serious and damaging problems do not exist,” she pointed out. “Yet I strongly believe and I challenge you that you should be agents of change.”
She argued that the graduates “need to be the ones that set the bar higher … to be the ones that work every day towards strengthening the moral fiber and social conscience of our homeland and by extension the region.”
Blanc called on the graduates to be motivated by an utterance of Nelson Mandela when he said, “education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
First Class Honors BSc Accounting Graduate, Aneesa Dailey, told the ceremony that reaching her goal was not without its obstacles and self-sacrifices.
“Getting towards this milestone was not without its challenges,” she said. “I am certain that we can all identify that the trials of effectively managing a full time life, for some of us that includes having a spouse and children with a full time job and being a student all in the same day. Some of us had to give up many of life’s exciting pleasures and luxuries just to be able to make this happen.”
The graduating class consisted of three men and 41 women, who received certificates at the ceremony.
Of the graduates two received certificates in Criminology, eight in Early Childhood Care and Education Administration, three in Early Childhood Care and Education (Teachers).
Additionally, one received an Associate of Science Diploma, two received diplomas in book keeping while seven received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education.
15 students also graduated with Bachelors of Science (Social Sciences) degrees, one received an executive diploma in Management(CHSB), two, Post Graduate Diplomas in Instructional Design, two received Masters of Arts(Teacher Education and Teacher Development) and one an Executive Masters in Business Administration (CHSB).
Congrats to my baby Nimo on his achievement.
Y anonymous if it is your baby?
Keena, is that you baby?
The police are now warning Dominicans that they should cease from engaging in any illegal activity or suspected illegal activity, such as accepting property, including money, from persons to facilitate any transaction
Thank you Dr. Blanc for hitting the nail on its head.
There still exist in Dominica a few good professional of integrity and influence who are brave enough to say it like it is, thats why i still do have hope that Dominica will be delivered sonn from those evil dooers, malcontents in public office and disgraceful religious pastors priest and bishops all of whom are bought for thirty pieces of silver, all of who prefered JUDAS
Great Speech Dr. Blanc. I think the speech should be printed in its entirety.
congratulations to all
Dr. Blanc, how can you expect them to be agents of change when unemployment continues to be a major threat to our economy. Most times these graduates are either left unemployed or underemployed – in a field which they did not pursue studies. Again, it goes to show how little money is allocated towards development within our country. And before the negative comments come barging in, no, i’m not talking about infrastructure and roads.
Still, i hope these uwi students gorge their own path, and are blessed with the LUCK and Personal Relations to land a job along the lines of their field of study.
Amen
DNO you needed a slide show .. that photo is very poor.
Congratulations Aneesa we are very proud of you
Nimrod Jno Baptiste you have made us your family proud. We love you bro…..
Very pertinent words of caution – ” you can choose to burry your head in the sand ,ignore the problems. Or be agents of change”. The educated ones are the ones who have let this country down. A much wider intelligencia yet the intellectuals continue to behave and rationalize like their grand parents.
The intelligent people sit by and allow people who are less educated to fool them with lies and deception. While the educated ones may be subjected to the power and rules of the less educated ones the educated ones have the power to change the status quo by the stroke of a pen – one X nit a dissertation , not. Thes but a simp X.
If the educated ones are going to sit by and allow the country to go to hell in a hand basket what good s the diploma. In. Country with negative growth te university graduates are forced to seek government salaries and become sycophants to the hgh school graduates and non productive leeches and VAT’s posing as leaders. In order to breakths chain the diploma holders must separate the Steve’s from the ignorance and arrogance and let your light shine among the darkness of devious behavior , blatant self enrichment and theivery, inefficient aministrative actions and policies.
Another obstacle is the unethical behavior of lawyers. Yes they too are educated but history continue to prove that dirty lawyers conjoined to politicians or Dirty lawyers who are politicians themselves are societies biggest epidemy. the diploma holding people must again recognize these dirty waters and nip them in the bud very early. Again a simpe X .
I am extremely proud of you. You have done it Aneesa. You are one determined young lady. You set your goals and you allowed nothing to stand in your way. Let me borrow a line from a previous comment. To God be the Glory, Great things he hath done. Jacklyn my sister I know how proud you must be feeling at this time. Your little star continues to shine bright. Keep praying for her. I will do the same.
Aneesa my dear congratulations. You have accomplished yet another milestone. Don’t stop. You have the energy, the zest and the determination. You also have the academic capabilities. Use them to empower yourself. Dr. Aneesa Dailey has a good ring to it. Why not go for it. Love you Aneesa , YOU ARE GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dr. Blanc really needs to get in touch with reality. UWI is the biggest white elephant and institutional derelict that has refused to change their modus operandi for all these years, only to have other schools that just started pass them and she wants the graduate of this draconian institution to be an agent of change?? She really needs to get real.
3 men 41 women .we really run this world women.now you the 41 women are suppose to be women of worth do make them wake on all you stand up it is your right.
congrats
I was at the graduation ceremony today and I must say that I was very impressed with Ms.Dailey. She spoke with such eloquence and gave an excellent representation of herself and UWI. Her famIly must have been very proud today. Congratulations to all the graduates
I concur. All the speeches were of excellent quality. Congrats to Dr. Savarin, Dr. Blanc, Ms. Dailey and Ms. Reviere.
We need agents of “wake up” not change (like Obama) although certain changes do need to come about but they need to be in the best interest of DA.
I Was at the graduation ceremony and I must say I was very much impressed with the young lady, Ms.Dailey. She spoke eloquently and gave an excellent representation of herself and UWI. Her family must have been very proud. Congratulations to all the graduates
Great speech Ms.Dailey. The delivery and diction were excellent and the message timely and inspiring. All the best in your endeavors
Congratulations Aneesa. To God give the Glory, Great things he have done.
Kudos to the ladies who studied Early Childhood Education. Dominica needs to step up to the game. This is where Mrs.Blanc should begin,”at the foundation” Those teachers and administrators are ready to groom the littles ones for the future. This is where the example begins. It is time to have qualified and trained early childhood educators in Dominica. All the little cabaways we throw our children for care is not properly scrutinized and we wonder why we raise our children so well at home and they end up on the bad side. They were groomed by untrained staff at preschools and daycares. Remember parents your children spend more time in those institutions during the day than the time spent with you. Seek qualifications of the staff at daycares and preschools before enrolling your kids.
Do the graduates know why they have studied as they did and for what? That should have been told to them at the start. We are educated by our parents so that we can be better intellectually and economically than they were and perform our lives better. When we come to the level of higher education we are supposed to go to the next level and make our country better than it is so how can we be afraid to promote change? Yet so many of these graduates will be afraid or reluctant because of our negative politics which pervades everything at all levels in Dominica. As always the women seem well represented and our males well seek and you might find them somewhere else. Congratulations to them all Study is hard but the reward is sweet.
Congratulations Miss White! I am very happy for you. Continue to shower our little ones with the love and care you are always willing to give. May God bless you always.

This s the second D/can who tried to fool God lol!
His fellow northerner said politics is not about truth,So Dr. Blanc i feel for you the youth want to get along they will choose the easist route.remember men are in control here they see their plans in the making for the 41 ladies who are now qualified. They wanna drive new SUVs wear nice clothes fly out to shop in miami etc. They wanna party every weekend. Dr.blanc they are laughing at your observations.I know 3 ministers who are ready to dive in. new blood fresh meat with needs wants etc. perfect storm. ready to exploit.

THREE MEN and 41 women, hmmmmmmmmm
Some men study online a graduate with degrees too u know….
I know lots of women with degrees who are a complete waste of time when it comes to work.
Your comment is just nonsensical!
Come on bro/sis, tell the men be part of the numbers too. We need them at our sides graduating with us too. So look at the bigger picture, there are also women completing degrees online and they still surpass the men. So you should encourage your peers my friend.
Yes, indeed where are the men?
Sitting along the roadside
