UWP candidate accuses police of not investigating report of vandalism

Glenroy Cuffy

The United Workers Party’s (UWP) declared candidate for the Roseau Central constituency,  Glenroy ‘Soso” Cuffy is accusing the police of inaction in investigating a matter he reported on the weekend involving the vandalism of his vehicle.

Cuffy told Dominica News Online (DNO) during an interview on Tuesday that he made a report on Sunday [February 3] but at present the police have not moved on the matter.

He explained that his vehicle was vandalized while parked on the link bridge road between Roseau and Goodwill in the wee hours of Sunday morning.

According to Cuffy, the battery compartment where the two batteries are usually kept was damaged and both batteries were stolen and the wires leading to the batteries were cut.

“I went to the police station and I made a report. The station officer at the time took the report and I was told by the station officer who happened to be a woman, that there were no G.I’s [General Investigators] available…,” he said. “I was advised to report later down in the morning or they [would] give me a call.”

Cuffy continued, “I waited for the call; I didn’t get the call. About 3:30 pm, I went down to the police station and I did a follow-up. I was told there were no photographers so they were not able to come. From that point, I can tell you I have not seen any police officer.”

He went on to say that as far as he is aware, no police investigation is being carried into the matter

“I was told the police would come to visit me and see what happened to the vehicle,” he stated. “I have not seen anyone and so I conclude that there is no investigation.”

Cuffy said his vehicle is his livelihood; he uses it to transport materials for business and personal use,

“That’s my daily bread; that’s what I survive by,” he indicated. “My customers are disadvantaged.”

Meantime, Cuffy said he’s not assuming that the act is politically motivated but if it is, he is not intimidated and if it isn’t, he’s urging perpetrators to desist from such criminal activities against members of the public.

“I have not concluding that this is politically motivated, although many persons may be speculating, but what I can say is that if such is the case, I believe at this point in time, if that has to reach that point, if it’s for me to come out in the political arena, I am not going anywhere, I am not intimidated,” he remarked. “I will continue to advance my ability to represent people’s interest and so I am not fearful of anything.”

He warned persons to avoid interfering with other people’s private property.

To all those who are too smart to understand the dynamics at play, here’s a little food for thought. If your vehicle is damaged, or vandalized, a police report is required to process a claim with your insurance company. His insurance company may not replace the stolen battery, if it cost less than his deductible. That’s a figure that we do not know, since we have not read his policy. Given the cost of things in Dominica, that battery probably cost a grand easily. Irrespective of who this gentleman is, he has a right to file a claim with the Police Department, because of vandalism to his vehicle. This should not be a national story either.

Glenroy Cuffy, stop making everything political, man. Get a life and find yourself a new, decent vehicle. What is wrong with you and the UWP apparatus? Stop making a fool of yourself, man. That will not work against the Labour Party. Get a meaningful job and take care of your family, man. UWP has a bad reputation for fueling gossips and trash.

With these renewed attacks on the police I wonder what was the purpose of the opposition meeting with the police commissioner. Were they sincere with their approach ? Or were they just pretending ? Were they just fishing for points to crucify the commissioner later ? The UWP candidate (undeclared ) did not take this matter to the insurance company to make a claim . An insurance claim report would certainly be good in helping the police investigation. Insurance prefer that process so if they need to have the person arrested for false claim they would have had the documentation.
I guess its normal for people to go to the police then the media to report theft . So now I know what to do when I have shop lifting in my store. For shop lifting, or If your car or house catches fire you go to the police first ,then await on a police investigation and then you go to the media before you make an insurance claim. That is being politically correct. Tanks Mr Cuffy….you have my vote.

You have my vote, Yea right. If you do not know police duties and insurance customer service what use are are you . That means you know nothing about representative values so how can you represent anyone. Just like the politicants In the opposition who have no clue of Parliamentary practice . I know I can do better than that, that is why I will replace all of you……I alone , a one man opposition with appointed Senators

Glen Roy, let me give you a little advice, don’t expect police to attend every day petty little crime. You made a complaint to the police you should have got a paper statement take it to your insurance if you have any and make a claim. By the way Glenroy, that rusty box you have driving about the battery compartment should be properly secured.

Glen Roy, I understand your frustration. I too have been a victim of a robbery. However you need to keep things in perspective. This was not a homicide. If you have motor vehicle insurance and you want to make a claim, do so. Otherwise replace the batteries and move on.

In such a case of vandalism and robbery wouldn’t the insurance company need an official police report? If so, how would thenpolice issue him such a report to file his claim if they DON’T GO ASSESS THE SITUATION?

      • Joseph John
        February 7, 2019

Insurance companies do not need police reports to investigate a claim and make or refuse payment. They are independent companys. How many people you know with hurricane insurance claims who went to the police. If there is theft of your car you make a claim you do not call the police. If there is an accident and no one was hurt or killed you may or may not call the police. Sometimes you just make a report to the police.
This guy just want to further negative emotions against the police.

      February 6, 2019

Zandoli, I vehemently disagree with your advice. The main issue is the flippant reaction of the police. The police are there to serve and protect all citizens. This was a gross dereliction of duty. So if all citizens were to just move on when robbed, it means we are giving the criminals a free pass. Crime will then continue to escalate to unprecedented levels. If this incident is political and is swept under the proverbial rug, then things will become frighteningly bad as revenge then becomes a factor. No robbery should be taken lightly. When we let down our guard bad things multiply exponentially.

lbo, I truly appreciate what you saying but in most cases the police don’t have enough time to attend every little petty crime. Take for example the UK sometimes a burglar enter into your home 🏡 you call the police they might be busy and don’t come or call on you days later what can one do? Why should he get special treatment just because he did not secure his battery compartment properly!!!

Brods, in the overall scheme of things, a stolen battery does not deserve national attention. These things happen. It may or may not be politically motivated.

As I said, I have been a victim of a break and enter at my home. You want to talk about being violated when some total stranger kicks down your down rummage through your drawers, throwing your stuff all over the floor and taking what they want, and leaving your house a mess? I have been there.

So I called the cops, who came and to my surprise, their reaction was a big yawn. The first thing they asked was “do you have homeowners insurance?”, “call them, we see this all the time. Unless we catch them in the act, there is little chance in hell of arresting them after the fact”. They took a brief report and everything else was between my insurance company and me. My insurance never asked for a police report, neither did they come to my home. An adjuster came to my place of work to get a list of the stolen items.

It has been proven that when the police stamp out petty violations of the law, like traffic offences, crime usually decreases. Stealing batteries may be an insignificant crime to you but to the victim the vehicle may be his only source of income. No crime should go uninvestigated. No one has a right to mess with my personal possessions without permission. The Police Force is too politicized. In no other jurisdiction a senior or junior officer can make political mischief on the local Talk Shows without being reprimanded or dismissed. Mr. Mills biased and political diatribe brings the Police Force into serious disrepute. A police officer’s job is to carry out his/her duty without fear or favor. One should never make spurious excuses for police ineptness, prejudice or wrongdoings.

This is a very serious situation when there is no police to investigate a basic case like this. I think it was a political sabotage and also it was because of Mr. Cuffy’s political leaning why it took the police so long to look into the matter.
I really hope the police do not contribute in the spoiling of Dominica.

Why is it political? Is Mr. Cuffy saying that because he is a politician he is not subject to the random acts of criminality that many ordinary folks endure in our society. I have been a victim of theft, recently and in the past and for all the incidents I would rate the police as extremely lazy and inefficient. It is not politics, just a police force with no motivation.

Hell yes it’s political when he is a prospective candidate for the opposition and the police refuse to investigate vandalism against his property. The act itself may very well have been political to! I guess DLP cronies will say that the battery fell out while he was driving and he didn’t realize. You know…. like the stone that heat the good doctor in Point Michel and they said it came from a construction site. SMH.

  9. REMEMBER VENEZUELA
    February 5, 2019

In Luke 17:32 we see a three word warning that reads “REMEMBER LOT”S WIFE.” As we read the account of Lot’s wife in Ge. 19,we see that she got several warnings but because she did not take heed it costs her her life. Similarly we have gotten several warnings but we keep ignoring them.
As I read above article I feel compelled again to warn us because clearly, what we see happening in Da today is a duplicate of what caused Venezuela to be where she is today. Chavez ran the Red Clinic, the people were made poor, the rule of law was only there to protect the government while the opposition was arrested and jailed. Venezuela has the biggest oil reserve in the world! Yet we are reading of women having to sell their hair to survive. What do we have in Da? Skerrit destroyed everything we once had and fortunately for us, Venezuela is in chaos and turmoil at a time when we are getting ready to vote. I am a laborite but I put DA first and beg us to put DA first and vote Skerrit out! DNO…

  11. Ibo France
    February 5, 2019

I might become repetitive but it’s worth repeating, every arm, organ, organization, institution of government in Dominica, all, without any exception, are monumental failures. If the incident had happened to a Minister of government or the most Senior Counsel, police investigators would have swarmed the scene with alacrity. This behavior of the police is indefensible. The Force lacks training, human and other resources, and is hopelessly politicized. The commissioner serves at the behest of the PM. His main preoccupation is to carry out the political directives of his master. If you want to hit Mr. Carbon in the head just kick Mr. Skerrit in his derriere. Dominica would never live up to its fullest potential under Skerrit’s stewardship. There are too many inept political appointees in key positions in the public service. (Police Chief, Speaker of Parliament, Electoral Commissioner, President, PS’s, etc.). The DLP government is an existential threat to Dominica.

I keep hearing that some people have been DECLARED candidates for constituency on UWP ticket. So what happened to the democratic process of choosing candidates at a convention by atendies. This must be the new “dictacratic” decision making. Normally before primary or convention a would be candidate is called a “hopeful” or even a caretaker. So this business of declared candidacy really have me confused. Is that self style, or declared like the opposition leader of Venezuela . Should the police hop because you are a “declared” member of Parliament , declared leader of the opposition or declared Hon PM.
So because you have acquired fake candidacy you can give the police one day to jump to your demand. This happened on Sunday today is Tuesday and you have already lodge a complain with DNO a media outlet. No complain to higher authorities but to the media about two days without action. And you complaining already.
Nice poster picture ready for campaign even before convention…

Where is the newly promoted Acting Deputy to investigate?????? and arrest?????? I suppose it must not be in his or his Red masters and handlers because Mr. Soso Cuffy is ‘Blue’—– This police force is nothing but the armed wing of the Labour Govt- It is certainly not here to serve and protect all the citizens of Dominica. But so was Defense force and see what happened to its members—in time Carbon and Mr. Acting Deputy. we go see !!!!!!!

Well remember Soso we are living in a Dominica where the police force is not what it used to be ..It is political, and a highly broken institution…Imagine an inspector is even calling talk shows to defend his party, and a head puppet on a string is saying that he cannot stop him . Wasn’t Danny threatened with a firearm? Did anything happen?
The police is now largely an intimidatory force to turn out in numbers at opposition meetings,or CCM protests to spray protesters are with teargass…Hope those wicked semi illiterate idiots get their day in court. You now have to protect your property!!!
