United Workers Party (UWP) candidate for Roseau Central, Glenroy ‘Soso’ Cuffy has said that the budget allocation for the agricultural sector needs to be increased.
Cuffy said while speaking at the UWP Eastern District Zonal Rally in La Plaine on July 21, that if the UWP comes into power, they will send farmers to work to earn a living for their families and produce for their country.
“Everywhere in the world, agriculture is taken seriously by every government, so much so that they place high budgets or they have allocated big budgets to ensure that they care for the farmers so that the farmers can produce for the nation and to sell their produce outside to bring in much needed foreign exchange to their countries,” he stated.
“As a result we need to tell you we must increase the budget allocation, as a party, in agriculture… the feeder roads, we will unblock them. We have to stop that rural urban drift so farmers who are skillful in producing to sustain the livelihoods of their family and this country, we going to send them back to work.”
Cuffy worked in the agricultural sector, more particularly, the banana industry, for many years.

Agriculture is the way out of poverty for us. Soso, you and the UWP are right on track. Let us support Soso and Team Dominica, my people! Let’s vote for them! Okay, Sir; you have a small point here but there is more to it than the talk.
No matter how much money the government put in farming, if the productions of farmers are not being sold outside of Dominica–then it will be almost useless.
Dominica is a farming country, but the “Roseau Market” is not enough to see a rising farming industry in on the Island–once again these products must be widely exported to the countries where farming is less abled.
For example, Toronto is a city of 3 million people, and we depend on the farming from outside for our food products; so wherever there is a supermarket there is also a huge produce department, with fish, poultry, and other meats.
Tell us how you plan to “create export” for our farming production, otherwise, you are

I am from the Southern part of the island,a Labour Party stronghold. I supported deceased Roosie Douglas (hope his soul is resting in peace). After Roosie Douglas died, I became a little cold cause I wasn’t too confident with Pierro. But when this young boy who became a one-man rogue regime took over I totally gave up on these incompetent fools! I can’t support the likes of blakmort! I worked on the Castle Bruce School built by the UWP during their reign, and I can testify and attest to the fact that truck loads of plantain and other agricultural produce was leaving that area. Whilst walking home one evening in Castle Bruce,a young woman was proudly boasting that she earns$800.00 every week from agriculture. All this is now gone and you supporters of the one-man rogue regime labarats want to be proud of red clinic!

Dominica used to export tons of bananas every month, there was always a ship at cane field loading bananas. What happened!

Agriculture needs to exhiit a comprehensive plan which filters into other industries. Agriculture cannot continue to operate in a silo on its own. It needs to realize it supplies raw materials for manufacturing and agro processing which in turn filters into retail and the tourism industry. The demands put on agriculture in terms of production should be market driven with allowances for manufacturing and agro processing. Why do you think a cup of juice is now twice as expensive than soft drink .
Everything by the UWP is, we will do this and we will do that but never ever telling us HOW THEY are going to do things THEY say they are going to do. Soso, words are cheap.
