WEATHER UPDATE: Irma now a major Category 3 hurricane

At 5am, Hurricane Irma was located near latitude 18.0 degrees north and longitude 47.5 degrees west or about 945 miles east of the Leeward Islands and is moving towards the west southwest near 15mph. Irma is now a Category 3 hurricane with maximum sustained winds near 115mph. The center of Hurricane Irma is projected to move just northeast of the Leeward Islands by Tuesday into Wednesday.

Regardless of the projected path, a deterioration in conditions to include moderate to heavy showers, thunderstorms, gusty winds and dangerous seas are expected, especially on Tuesday and Wednesday. All users of the sea are advised to be vigilant and make all preparations to protect life and property by Monday.

Interests in Dominica and the Leewards are advised to monitor the progress of this system and to make all the necessary preparations as Irma continues to move towards the Lesser Antilles.

According to the current weather outlook for Dominica, weak unstable conditions are expected to produce occasional cloudiness and scattered showers mainly across the central and northern portions of the island chain during the next 12 to 24 hours.

Moderate seas are expected during the next 24 hours with waves peaking near 7.0 feet. Thereafter, seas are expected to increase to peak near 15.0 feet in northerly swells.
