Tropical Storm Ernesto has formed in the Atlantic Ocean and is moving towards the Caribbean islands, however local weather officials have said it poses no direct threat to Dominica.
Ernesto has become the fifth named storm of the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season.
The storm was named late Monday afternoon after a Hurricane Hunter plane found a small, closed area of surface low pressure east of the Lesser Antilles.
Just before 5 p.m. the center of Ernesto was located about 295 miles east southeast of Antigua with winds of 40 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).
Ernesto is moving about 28 mph towards the west-northwest.
The NHC said forecast expects some decrease in forward speed in the next couple of days and Ernesto will track swiftly towards the Leeward Islands.
Weather officials in Dominica have said the storm poses no direct threat to Dominica with the center passing 150 miles north of the island.
However, heavy rains associated with the storm will affect Dominica over the next 24-48 hours.
A Flood Warning has been issued for the island from 6 PM today to 6 PM Tuesday, August 13th.
A Flood Warning is issued when flooding is imminent or occurring.
Dominicans living near waterways have been told to be on the alert and be ready to move to safety as required.
A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for the following countries:
* St. Kitts, Nevis, Montserrat, Antigua, Barbuda, and Anguilla
* Guadeloupe
* St. Martin and St. Barthelemy
* Sint Maarten
* British Virgin Islands
* U.S. Virgin Islands
