A Tropical Storm Warning has been discontinued for Dominica as Hurricane Irma, an extremely Category 5 hurricane, moves away from the island.
However, feeder bands from Irma will produce rain, gusty winds and thunderstorms across the island this morning. Large swells are also expected to affect the island.
At 5am, Hurricane Irma was located near latitude 17.9 degrees north and longitude 62.6 degrees west or about 185 miles north northwest of Dominica and is moving west north west at 16mph away from Dominica.
Maximum sustained winds have remained near 185mph making Irma an extremely dangerous Category 5 Hurricane.
On the forecast track, Irma will continue to move away from Dominica.
As a result, the tropical storm warning for Dominica was discontinued. However, feeder bands moving in from the north, west and south west located on the southern and south-eastern side of Irma is expected to continue to produce pockets of showers, moderate to heavy at times, thunderstorms and gusty winds across the island during this morning.
Reported rainfall accumulations of at least 2 inches (50mm) have already occurred and at least another 2 to 4 inches (75 to 100 millimeters) are still possible.
Some flash-flooding and land slippage is likely and it may become necessary to introduce a flood watch at any time.
Thus, residents, especially in the north, are urged to remain vigilant and take all the necessary precautions.
• Persons in areas prone to flooding, landslides and falling rocks are advised to be extremely vigilant and to exercise extreme caution as flash flooding and winds gusting to near tropical storm force could occur during the morning period.
• Be on the lookout for fast rising water. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CROSS FLOODED ROAD or WATER-WAYS.
Occasional gusty winds to near storm force are still possible as the morning progresses.
In addition, large north-westerly to westerly swells of at least 4.5 (15ft) are also expected to affect the island. Large waves and dangerous rip-currents are likely, which will create unsafe conditions for small-craft operators. Sea-bathers and other users of the sea are advised to stay out of the water.
A Small-Craft Warning and a High-Surf Advisory remains in effect until 6:00 P.M, today Wednesday 6th September, 2017.
A small-craft Warning means in this case that surface winds greater than or equal to 25 knots and seas equal to or greater than 3m (10ft) are already affecting or expected to affect the marine area.
A High-Surf Advisory is issued when breaking wave action poses or is expected to pose a threat to life and property within the surf zone.
Note that, rough sea conditions will be maintained and a Small-Craft Warning and a High-Surf Advisory remains in effect for dangerous seas. All users of the sea are advised to take all necessary precautions to protect life and property.
• Mariners and other users of the sea should remain extremely cautious and do not venture out of port. All sea bathers are to stay out of the water.
• Persons living along the coast (particularly low-lying areas) should be on the lookout for possible flooding from sea-water intrusion.
The Meteorological Service will continue to monitor and provide updates.
