The plural of person is usually people except in formal or legal contexts, where the plural is often persons. She is a very nice/shy/interesting person.
I thought that I was the only one being annoyed at hearing Dominicans constantly using the word person instead of people.Where did this “person thing” come from.. Each time I hear persons this and persons that , I am annoyed. They also say departmant, instead of department, statemant, nstead of statement, famerly, instead of family and the list goes on..Some of us in Dominican love to embrace other cultures Let us continue to speak like true Dominicans.
People (peoples), Person (persons), Individual (individuals), oh boy… what’s the meaning of these words?…. I am confused!!!.
Well maybe it’s better to use; “you people” or those people” sounds familiar?
I think that is the beauty of the English language, which surpasses all other languages; words can be manipulated to mean the same….
We need lots of rain to wash away skeritt and his evil wicked labor party
Hurricane Season start
What advice did they give to people with tarpaulin roof?
“Persons” in areas prone to flooding, landslides…
I`m beginning to get annoyed hearing the word “Persons” relating to a umber of people. It really s distasteful.
The above should read: Residents, or Villagers or people in areas prone flooding, landslides etc…..”
The correction I have given is specific, not generalised and relates to the audience intended for.
I Hope this is helpful
To say “persons”, one never knows who is it is being referred to. (It hurts my ears)
So true.
Just when did this “persons” thing start?
And those in the media who keep using it should take some basic English lessons
OMG it hurts my ears too, Dominica just going backward in every which way. God help us!!! From people to persons, from multiple hospitals to one, from 70000 people to 40000, from having teeth to no teeth everywhere. I can keep going on and on.
Me too. ..you are not alone. Many here feel if they use ‘persons’ they will be perceived as educated. Lol
Well…don’t listen if you are not a person. I am not a resident but I am here as a person therefore I appreciate the inclusion. Keep your correction to yourself. You are very selfish
