Wesley woman on remand after allegedy attempting to murder cousin

A 22-year old woman of Wesley was remanded into custody yesterday after being charged for the attempted murder of her cousin over the weekend.

Muriel Thomas allegedly stabbed Rosemund Cheryl Thomas with a knife in her neck during a dispute.

Thomas was also charged with grievous bodily harm.

Her bail was denied on the premise that she was a flight risk and that the victim could still be in danger as there were allegations of threats from Thomas. The prosecution also feared that the defendant would interfere with investigations.

Her preliminary inquiry is scheduled for May 20 at Wesley.

The victim is now out of the hospital.

I read through most of the comments. Some where rather interesting. My opinion on the matter is that we are now witnessing the product of a phenomenon which has been in the making for a few years now.
A great section of our community migrtaed from wesley in the 1980’s. Most of those who left were those who had an aspiration for a better life and also had the opportunity to do so. As a result a huge void was created in the community. The young generation not having a a wide cross section of role models to look up to turned to the Tv influence made available through the American media being more readily available.

Relatives sending barels from “overseas” thus giving our children the impression that things they desired could be attained easily did not help either

Someone mentioned the absence of the father figure and lack of that fatherly influence as being one of the contributors to the demise in our societies. I would have to concur with that insight.

However my fellow parishoners, sitting back and pointing out the ills will do nothing to curb or for that matter eradicate the rash of violence that has tainted our little beloved community over the past years.

I would recommend that a group of civic minded wesley citizens get together ( and I know we have lots who fit this description) get together to establish an organization that can look into ways in which we as a people can help to resolve some of our social ills and return our people to the place we were in the 60’s and 70’s a thriving producing viable community of friendly people. we can do it. YES WE CAN. If this idea interest you email me at [email protected]

While I don’t condone what Muriel did. She deserves a break, because she has had a troubled pass. What she needs is counseling and some from of rehabilitation not Jail that’s not going to help her.

    • Pooh Bear
      December 30, 2010

are you saying that because she has had trouble in the past she should get a break? I think that for this reason only she should be taught a lesson so that she will not get involved in such stupid behaviour again.

        December 30, 2010

To my understanding, “so sad” is not stating that because Muriel has had trouble in the past she should get a break, she is stating that the yound lady is troubled (disturbed) and sending her to prison for a few months/years will not help her, she needs counseling etc. to assist in recovering her troubled self. Correct me if I’m wrong.

What trouble has she had in her past that allows her a break for such and act? Maybe its because she got away with so much in the past that caused her not to stop and think before acting this time…….

our laws in dominica are the best. a young lady stabs her cousin in the neck shes charged for attempted murder. an ex cheif of police son shot an unarmed man in the head with a hand gun and gets charged with grevious bodily harm…she is denied bail on account that shes a flight risk where as he is granted bail..

this young lady dosn’t have the means to be considered any flight risk where as the ex police cheif son had connections overseas and the financial means to be considered a flight risk.

in dominica there are too sets of laws, one for the upper class and one for the lower class. if you have whats considered to be a big name in dominica then you’ll more than likely get away with murder.
if you’re what they consider a nobody then stockfarm will be your new address for the next few years.

I don’t think that thinking is reserved for Dominica, all over the world you are finding this disparity of justice. We are all equal but some are more equal than others.

I don’t know the situation surrounding this incident but I am certain that the victim here who happens to be a cousin of the accused is probably having second thoughts about proceeding with the case.

Using a knife to defend yourself in a dispute was a bit over the top but in the end blood is thicker than water and no matter what the gravity of the situation is family always forgive each other and there should be no difference in this case.

When people don’t pray and just live like animals, what do you expect? Some people are so uncivilized it makes you think twice before casting an eye on them much less to approach them. The country is so overpopulated with savages , if you say the wrong thing is slice they want to slice you up. Just look at all these senseless murders that occured over the year. This makes absolutely no sense. They need to do a pilgrimage in Dominica. Send holy water over the place to wipe out whatever evil is spreading over the land. I have some sage to burn in every village starting tomorrow. This just too much man

Holy water is from d devil not from God. It is manufactured by d devil. What they need in Dominica is nothing carnal but spiritual. A spiritual revival to sweep over the land to run away every evil forces.

    • OHOH
      December 30, 2010

Well when we turn our backs on God what do you expect?. God does not push Himself where he is not needed. People are just laying blame on each other and no one is looking inward. So many people are preaching violence all in the name of politics. Persons who claim to be intelligent, educated. What does it gain to have all that and you are a trouble pusher, a preacher of violence and not peace. ” BLESSED ARE THE PEACEMAKERS: FOR THEY SHALL BE CALLED THE CHILDREN OF GOD”
What do we think when every weekend there is a bram somewhere. No time for church. So many are staying home and say that they pray to God – What about community prayer. What about supporting each other in our spiritual life. We complain of our young people all the time but what example are we the adults to our children. We send them to church and we remain home.

What about the many fathers who have turned their backs on their children especially their sons. What do you expect to happen to them in the future. They have needs – emotional, physical, spiritual. So many of our women are being abused and what do we see – women are the main culprits , the catalysts to so much of this behaviour. We talk and talk but no action.

We need to find time to worship our God – find somewhere we can go to him in all humiliaty. No time for silence to search our hearts. We look for the faults of others and not ours. Like Jesus said ” Who is without blame lelt him cast the first stone”.We are like a people who seem to think that God does not exist except in ltime of need – when something iunfortunate happens to us.

Give Jesus his rightful place in our hearts, our homes, our schools, our place of work, on the fields, in the streets, in the valleys and on top of the mlountain and allow Him to do what he long to do.

By the way we also find that many of our young people who used to go to church have stopped since they started working – Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and give to God what belongs to God.

Words cant even expresss how i feel, i remember this girl muriel like it was yesterday. Quiet little child always looking for some love and affection from a father figure she never had.her mom brendaly was a nice girl as i can remember and she tried her best raising her daughter in the right way/ When kids grow up they always tend to go to a different direction. we cant blame the mother for nothing. she did it . And i believe the government need to instill a hash punishment for such cases. Because some women too like to go to the extreme or a man that dont even care about them. Face it people we are certainly living in the last days, and the devil is on a rampaage seeking all that he can get.wisen up young people and ask God for the guidence to face the challenging world of hurt, misstrust, pain TRUST IN THE LORD AND HE WILL GIVE U THE DESIRES OF YOUR HEART.

I used to boast to my friends in America that while all islands have their problems, Dominica isn’t like that. Told them that while I have my American passport, I will always keep my Dominican passport because I will need it to “run back home”. I used to boast and say “google us, you will see for yourself, crime rate next to nothing, stable economy, etc., etc.” Now I am SCARED and ASHAMED to say that. Everytime I come to DNO is nothing but bad news: murders, stabbings, shootings, political corruption. Alas, alas…what have we come to? Have we sould our contry to the Devil? Where did we go wrong? When will this madness end? It is really time for Dominicans to stand up and demand a stop to this. Our country is too small for things like this to be happening, day after day, after day. There is blood on the streets of every village and as I see it, on the hands of the government who sit idly by, dedicating time and resources to other things while Dominicans kill themselves.

I don’t have the answer but there has to be a way to put an end to this. 2011 is coming and if 2010 is any indication of what is to come I am more than scared. Dominicans stand up and take back Dominica.

      ” maximus glutamus”

What are you referring to; when you speak of ” maximus glutamus?” If that is supposed to be English, I wish to inform you that you will not find that used in an medical, or scientific term. That’s what happens when people like to use words the believe is big, and long, only to find out they are using them wrong and has also spelt the words wrong!

Now since you are from Wesley, and you might be a cuz, I wish you will not feel offended me impressing upon you that the familiar scientific, and medical term that I know is ” Gluteus Maximus” and that part of the body is located between our Gluteus Medius, and our Adductor Magnus, actually it is part of our Hip.

” She is from Wesley she attempted to murder a family member over the weekend and we are only now hearing about this. Meanwhile, the Grand Bay headlines stayed as the main story from the moment the incident happened until yesterday.” ( Concerned).

What is so special, or so good about a family member attempted to murder one of her family?

Why would someone want the name of their community to stay in the headlines, or making the headlines because of a criminal offense. Killing someone is not a good thing, never mind killing your own family, or stabbing each other with knifes!

If you would like to see your village make headline, where murder, and stabbing’s are concern, if you are so concerned to a point where your name is ” Concerned” perhaps, you should help solve all the murders which has taken place in Wesley over the years, including the murder of my nephew, and the murder of the man who confessed to killing my nephew!

There are other unsolved murder mysteries in the village, if you can solve them, that might be a reason for you to argue that Wesley is not kept long enough in the headline.

In the meantime, do something constructive, promote something that the Community of Wesley can benefit from, when you have accomplished something interesting, and important enough that you can be proud of, call it to the attention of DNO, and if Wesley, did not make the Headline on DNO, then you can scream bloody-mary!

    Hahahahahahahahahahahahah!

Until then be quiet; I am from the Village of Wesley, and I do not wish Wesley, to make the headlines, and kept in the headlines, because of some foolish person committing a dumb crime! And let me warn: two of my younger sisters have returned for the holidays, if anyone of you ignorant Wesley thugs ever think of bothering them while they are there, don’t try, because, I the King of Wesley, the King of mud, will find you and they say; revenge is sweet!

When I heard about this I was really taken back. Before a conclusion is prematurely arrived at the facts of the case must be presented. I know both of the young ladies involved. Cheryl was very close to my family. In fact, we are related. And not because we are related I am speaking from this angle. She is a very nice girl. Very helpful and though she could be saucy in the mouth at times, is very respectful. Muriel I know as a little child. I know first hand that she had a rough, rough upbringing. She came over to Wesley from Marigot with her mother as a child and I guess remained there. I am not sure how she and Cheryl are related. Persons maybe just saying that they are because they have the same last name.

Nonetheless, what Muriel did was WRONG!! It is unfortunate that they both had the same boyfriend but what right does Muriel have to be at Cheryl’s home at 3 a.m. in the morning? After she stabbed Cheryl, my girl changed her clothes and put on Cheryl clothes before calling the ambulance. This is how heartless she is…she rode the ambulance to Marigot Hospital with the unconscious Cheryl and when Cheryl got back to her senses threatened her by saying, if you tell anyone who stab you I will kill you!. Doesn’t someone like that, irregardless of their economic status deserve to be behind bars? I certainly think so and I commend the justice system for their foresight.

Even sadder is that the young man in the middle of this cannot do anything for either of them He himself is before the law for his foolish behavior. It is a really sad situation all around. I am hoping and praying that Cheryl pulls through and is able to function properly to take care of her children. As for Muriel, I hope she learns a serious lesson in Stockie! Don’t fight for no man! Don’t loose your freedom, your dignity for no man! It is not worth it. The man want to have his cup overflowing with women, you cannot deal with it, leave him. When one door is closed a window is opening somewhere. Besides, if there is a confrontation to be had, confront the man not the woman.

Young people need to understand this and stop putting themselves in such stupid situations and bringing down the name of my beautiful village.

Does he/she realized that this is simply the truth? He/ She seem to be commented to every other post. I agree that the justice system in beloved Dominica is biased but what Muriel did was totally uncalled for. She had enough time to think before she act, bearing in mind that she is poor and unemployed and has three kids (and they say one in she belly) before going all the way to Cheryl’s house at 3 in the morning…..

I just say it how I see it. I am a born and bred Wesleyan. I lived there from birth to 26 years of age before migrating. When I hear about these situations my heart hearts. It has been one of my life long dreams to have a home in Dominica catering to young women. To provide them with counseling and other assistance to help them see their worth. To help them develop the skills that they have. Some are excellent cooks, some are fashionistas in their own rights, some are hairstylists..etc. These are skills that they could develop and use to better themselves. What is happening is a domino effect. These young people are living out what they have learnt. They grew up seeing that sort of violence in their homes and just sub-consciously think that it is right. There are other ways of resolving issues besides violence.

Some people talk about the Church. Yes, the Church is an institution that is supposed to help people in need. But, we have lost sight of the true meaning and representation of the Church. It has become a money making venture. Persons are no longer concerned with or about each other. They spit out quotes from the Bible, but do they really understand what they mean? I think we need to get back to being spiritually connected with ourselves and each other. That will help guide us away from being so quick to react negatively.

I have been reading some of the comments being made by others. While I support some of the sentiments shared some are just simply crazy!!!

This situation has a great lesson to be learned. Cheryl and Muriel are examples of what the result will be for persons engaged in these kinds of lifestyles. I am hoping that those who share their opinions here and maybe in such situations are taking note

. A VERY SPECIAL NOTE TO YOUNG WOMEN –
If a man is with you and says he loves you and chooses to have outside women, your responsibility is to confront him. You and him are the ones in business not you and the other woman (except if she tries to tackle you or something- then she have to take what she get right there and then. Not later – that is premeditated).

If the man says he loves you and want to have other women and you cannot deal with it, as I have said before- LEAVE HIM!!!!! There are sooooo many other men around who would respect and love you.

If the man says he loves you and want to have other women, then it is plain to see….HE DOES NOT RESPECT YOU…LEAVE HIM!!

I totally agree with you, and note that I am from the north east, far removed from Grandbay. It never ceases to amaze me how in 2010 we can still have such stereotyping in Dominica. I ve found that the reporting of news in this country is too lopsided.

  33. Concerned
    December 29, 2010

This is what I call bias reporting. She is from Wesley she attempted to murder a family member over the weekend and we are only now hearing about this. Meanwhile, the Grand Bay headlines stayed as the main story from the moment the incident happened until yesterday. What I find amazing is that information regarding crime in Grand Bay is always highlighted but crimes involving other communities are down played. If they make the headlines they are soon removed and replace with something else whereas Grand Bay and surrounding communities get the headlines and remain in the headlines. While Grand Bay is not free from problems; there are people in Grand Bay who are successful with great accomplishment; these are never highlighted. What about all the positive things that happen in Grand Bay year round; why are not hightlighted like the crimes are? We should be reporting both the positive things about our communities and not just the negative things like the increase in crime rate. For all of your who had so much negative reporting to say about Grand Bay what do you have to say about the rest of Dominica for the attempted murder in Wesley and the othe murder?

Who made the reputation my friend? Who?
Like the saying goes one bad apple spoil the whole bunch, therefore a group of people maybe involved in their nonsense and as a result the whole community pays for it.
This, however does not mean that everyone in the community is bad.
Dominica is ours whether we are from GrandBay, Roseau,Wesley,Portsmouth,Scotthead, and so forth.
It doesn’t matter. What matters is if one place is affected we all are affected. Something can’t happen in d/ca and it doesn’t affect all of us.
Its a time for us to be united and put God first in our land. PPl do not be fooled.Dont be to materialistic but be realistic.Lets see God do wonders in our land and let it spread throughout the c/bean, because we are all in the C/bean pot.

      December 29, 2010

Concerned, based on your comments you are not in the ‘reporting’ business. The aim of news organizations is not only to keep people informed but KEEP and INCREASE readership. Just my opinion but a headline which reads “2 murders in Belles/Capuchin” would trump “attempted murder in Roseau/Portsmouth” on any reporting site. Crimes which take place in Grandbay are not the only ones which stay on headline new–your BIAS is what’s in play here.

Execution style murder in Roseau and surroundings don’t get the same publicity. My advice to you is to keep reading and observe the headlines. It took me over a year and a half of reading articles online and observing the trending before making my comment. My comment did not stem out of just one headline.

Here you go generalizing….maybe you need to find another village to move to. Everyone who is truly from Grand Bay will say to you; that although there are a few bad ones in the bunch they are not all bad. It’s not about victimization but rather about accuracy. If your family member did something wrong; and is considered bad would you like somebody to apply that title to you also? Grand Bay has some of the warmest people on the island and some thugs or wanna be thugs in the midst. Don’t blame the entire community for a few bad ones. Research who’s who in Dominica and you will realize that most of the people who have gone out to do postitive things in Dominica and abroad has some kind of history/roots associated with Grand Bay. Stop assuming you know the community…know what they say about assuming?
