Who’s the joker; Shane or Fazeer?

Shane Shillingford and Fazeer Mohammed
Shane Shillingford and Fazeer Mohammed

Just days before the start of the 1st test between the West Indies and Zimbabwe in Barbados, well-known regional commentator, Fazeer Mohammed, wrote an article in the online publication of the Trinidadian Express newspaper  in which he refers to Dominican off-spinner Shane Shillingford, as a “pelter”. In the article, he ridicules the omission of Narine in the West Indies team, “when jokers like Shane Shillingford and Veerasammy Permaul” he states, “go be in Barbados getting ready for the first Test against Zimbabwe tomorrow.”

Mohammed continues in his article, “you know what it is? Politics! It could only be politics. Ent it obvious? The second Test is in Dominica next week and they don’t want to make the hometown pick look so blatant, so they pick Shillingford the pelter for Kensington Oval, and then after West Indies mash-up this mingpiling Zimbabwe side, they go say they can’t change a winning combination and them Dominicans go get what they want and they go full up the stands in Windsor Park.”

The Trinidadian journalist/commentator goes on to state “So what if I call Shillingford a pelter? I lying? How you expect me to say the same thing about Narine? Where you was when he went to Australia to fix he action? Them scientists down there have all the latest technology and they bright too bad. Look how they fix up Marlon Samuels.”

Mohammed takes his commentary into the realm of regional politics with the following  statement. “You know what? I think we too nice. For decades we letting people all over the place say all kinda thing about we even though we propping up the whole of Caricom. And now that godfather Chavez gone, watch how all them prime minister go be asking Kamla to switch back on the Trinidad ATM and how they go give we all the work when the next hurricane clean them up.”

It is instructive to note that in the wake of Mohammed’s comments, Shane Shillingford went on to take 9 wickets in the 1st test against Zimbabwe, with a career-best man-of-the match winning performance of 6-49 in the second innings.

Many Dominicans, understandably so,  have taken umbrage at Mohammed’s criticism of Shillingford while some think that the article is a satirical piece which addresses cricketing and other broader regional issues from a Trinidadian perspective.

wow im from trinidad and some of the comments here are downright prejudicial toward fazeer and his race…im really disappointed if this is how the general dominican person thinks of indians as coolies…and although fazeer’s initial article did strike me as a ” what the f is this moment in time”…upon remembering my literature shakesphere in school i did see and understand his play on words based on the shakesphere play “much ado about nothing”…by allowing themselves to cave into ignorance and drunken pride dominicans will live to see that shillingford will drift out of international cricket after pakistan and other teams pumell him into oblivion…then after that charles and sammy will follow….you will be left waddling in your hangover vomit

This isn’t calypso nor a fiction story, that’s a sports commentator who’s reporting on the reasons why one should be selected over another player. Players are selected base on performance and statistics, so why would Fazeer make such comments about Shane Shillingford then to have other people defend him by saying it’s satire after Shane having a memorable performance.

I remember one of my teachers at college saying;”Caribbean countries compete against each other instead of complimenting each other”. As Hollis Liverpool stated in his calypso “All we have is seawater and sand”.The disease of Insularilty in the Caribbean can only hurt us not help us.Narine is no doubt an impressive bowler but it seems that he is better suited for the shorter form of the game.If the balling action has been accepted as corrected why bring it up again? Smaller islands have to work and perform twice as hard to gain acceptance in the region.

I would encourage many folks to read Fazeer’s article. I would hope that one would pick up the satire in that article. Fazeer is a supporter of Shane. Please remember Fazeer was one of the first ones to ask the selectors to explain why Permaul was picked over Shane in the recent overseas series. Many of us kept quiet but Fazeer went to bat for Shane.

Why has he chosen Shane to express his satire on? If he is expressing satire on those he loves, why didn’t he choose Narine for the article?

Did we forget our cheers when ‘Indian’ Chanderpaul got honarary citizenship of Dominica? Should we expose our true racist ‘Black vs Coolie’ feelings to Chanderpaul and the world? Do we attack the views persons hold or the persons holding views? Do the comments on this page reflect that Dominicans are basically smart, decent and God-fearing; or boorish hypocritical and racist?

If God be for you who can be against you?? Eh?? May I remind Fazeer Mohammed that “No Weapons Formed Against us Shall prosper” God always vindicate his children…I love Narine but he was just thrown straight in Test Cricket without any long games behind him..This omission will only make get better in the longer version of the game…Fazeer should recognise The West Indies Team is much better when we now have a bigger pool of proven winners to choose from..Just imagine Sarwan or Elder Bravo cant make the side..What does that tell you…Bishoo is still in contention and so is Nikita Miller..Look at Young Gabriel do you think there is any chance for Fidel Edwards to get back in there…Plus How come he Fazeer don’t comment when nearly half the side in the T20 is from Trinidad eh?? Answer me Fazeer answer..Just keep your mouth of God’s child Shane Shillingford…oh that same mic you use to critise could be your own demise….All I am saying God answers prayers so watch it Mister just watch it

Fazeer was only writing from the view of a couple trinis on the street having their drink as usual, and having a cricket conversation, trini style dialect of course. A coversation about shane, other cricketers, cricket history and even politics.

  15. DOMINCAN FANATICIST
    March 19, 2013

    DEAR FAZEER,
An attack on Shane Shillingford is an attack on the Sporting Sovereignty of the Republic of the Commonwealth of Dominica. We detest this publication and consider it a cowardly act ; a product of one of the most respected and loved Sports journalist in the West Indies.

Mr Mohammed has abused his obvious intelligence or better still has become an arrogant victim of it. The deliberate manipulation of the artistry of language through the conduit of satire has not escaped the observation of the often unsuspecting brilliant Dominican mind.

A very dangerous and insular war has started by this literary piece and may even create a Diplomatic Embarassment between Port Of Spain and Roseau. I need not tell you Fazeer that the SOCA music which was christened in Trinidad had its birth at ASTA-HOTEL ON VICTORIA STREET IN NEWTOWN ( Where the Venezuelan Embassy is now located )just ask KING shorty/Billomen about this . I need not tell you that the Calypso Artform was first practiced by the Maroons of Dominica before any other nation on earth. I need not tell you how the Soca music is now being flavoured by the BOUYON Genre.

So without going too deep into other aspects of this deceptive article. I must say that there has been a feeling of great goodwill between the great peoples of TNT and the great people of Dominica.

However we must fight the hydraheaded monster of insularity and work for the advancement of this Caribbean civilization. Fazeer must be man enough and do the honourable thing and apologise profusely to all those persons whom he offended in his article. The West Indian people can expect no less. But in making that appeal to Fazeer we must not be guilty in committing the very sins which we accuse him of doing.

We wish the west Indies well and remember WE ARE ONE PEOPLE LETS RALLY AROUND THE WEST INDIES.
THESE OFF FIELD DISTRACTIONS ARE NOT IN THE INTERESTS OF WEST INDIES CRICKET.

BUT FAZEER MOHAMMED YOU HAVE BLUNDERED ITS YOUR DUTY TO MAKE AMEMDS AND BE A MAN THAT WE KNOW YOU ARE, DONT IN THE MUSIC OF ARROGANCE AND CONTEMPTUOUS DISDAIN. DOMINICA IS AMONST THE LARGEST ENGLISH SPEAKING CARIBBEAN ISLAND AND WAS THE HOME OF FIRST CLASS CRICKET AHAED OF MANY LDC AND HAS LONG BEEN CONSIDERED TO BE THE HISTORICAL POWER HOUSE IN COMBINED ISLAND CRICKET.

WE WISH ALL THE PLAYERS WELL

    March 19, 2013

Fazeer is a racist. He is discriminating and jealous. He envies Shane. This is no satire. Some people make derogatory statements in jest but they are serious.
He should never have made such statements. He is fortunate that he is not in Canada or the US of all. He would be asked to resign his post.
Then he speaks in his dialect. He should speak proper English. I have Trinidadian friends. Thank God they do not speak this dialect to me. They speak proper English. I cannot stand people talking such dialect.
A Jamaican person was once speaking to me in her dialect. On reflex I immediately told her I do not speak Jamaican. I thought she forgot who she was talking to. :)
Setting any joke aside Fazeer is out of place. He is the joker; not Shane.
Go Shane, go! Congratulations and keep it up! God bless you!

In my opinion i dont need to read the who article of frazer to aske him to apologize on public radio for degrading us dominicans in the manner he does,is that how he encourage a young man who is rising to a level which maybe can bring the west indies side to the next level or he is just not happy that the young man in question is a Dominican, what is wrong with Dominica are we not in the west indies? And wat is his point about Chavez die and the prime ministers will come back to Trini treasury, what that man think? Is he going to be in Dominica? He should be ashame to come to dominica. But doe worry what he doe want to see in front of his door it will be right under his bed he better beleive that. I rest my case.

This is the reason i dont support. West indies cricket since i was old enough to understand, that all West Indies players has always come from islands like Antigua,Jamica, Guyana, Barbados and T&T. As far as cricket goes i dont gives a rat ass who play or who wins. Some of these islands thing they are the only islands that could represent the reion in any sport. Tell this indian go take a bath and maybe he will make the team along with his mama.

I wonder why comments are being posted pertaining to the writer’s race. “Coolie Man pissed that blackman dominate the action” is one such comment that is distasteful and has no place in this issue. I would just tell them: we may have plenty bush but we also have one murder a year, how many all u have? tell Fazeer to go and educate himself and his fellow indians to stop drinking rum and killing one another; Trinidad have over two murders a day; in Dominica you can sleep with your door unlock; in trinidad you have to make burglar bars for all your doors and windows. so fazeer when you attack Shane you attack all of us! and is one thing: a Dominican can take out maypwi good!! you too damn out of order! fresh!! and who all u trini think all you is!!

People, people, people, let not others laugh at us Dominicans. Fazeer is actually batting for Shane. The headlines read ” Much ado about Narine” and he goes on to ridicule some of the comments on the Trinidad street made by ordinary Trinidadians on the omission of Narine.

It is a brilliantly written piece that intermingles cricket and politics, The reference to the ATM machine for example mocks a famous speech by T & T PM Kamla that Trinidad is an Not an ATM machine and the the comment on work after the hurricane refers to the comment by PM Kamla that to give St.Vincent aid after a recent hurricane that Trinidad companies must get the contract to do the reconstruction.

so this is a great article in the mould of great West Indian writers of dialect like Samuel Selvon, Jan Carey and VS Naipaul. I recommend Samuel Selvon,s “A Brighter Sun” to those criticizing Fazeer.

I don’t think it was because he bowled so poorly. Then not to tour Bangladesh. All stemming from Australia. I think somebody was trying to cover/protect him. Fast forward to this series. They know they coming here, we still in our honeymoon with ‘test match’ stage, they add him to appease us,get us to attend the match.

This article represent the exact views of an Indian in Trinidad, they don’t like black people and they think that they are better than everybody else in the Caribbean, unless your from Barbados or Jamaica, they don’t respect you. If they don’t respect their local black people, who else will they respect. This shows us how we are perceived in the Caribbean, the beggars of the Caribbean. Instead we try to achieve self sustainability, we keep focusing on foreign policy and keep talking about what people have given to us, and how we have china giving us money. No one respects someone who are a beggar. We must change our imagine and policy and stop depending on people for our survival. By developing our productive sectors and forget about the Chinese and Venezuela. The only friends we have, is the European European Union, because when they give us money, they don’t rape our economy in exchange for this free money, unlike the Chinese. Caricom is a big joke, do you know that Students from the Caribbean countries need a visa in order to attend Universities in Trinidad. Think of it, if you have a Uncles, and one always begging, you expect the children from the uncle who has money, to respect the uncle who is begging, that child will always look down on the beggar and always want to have his own way, else he will remind you who feeds you.

There lies the need to think criticially:

It is a satirical piece as many learned minds are quick to point out; however, satire is not an end in itself, it is a means to an end. The writer is criticizing… he chooses to use satire to mask his criticism but the fact remains, he is criticizing.

Persons have a right to react when they feel they are being criticised, regardless of the technique used; so do not call persons who are lashing out “unlearned”. In this article there is much to be “disgusted” with.

See beyond the humour and exaggeration; its really just a man criticizing!

By the way Narine is no mysterious spin bowler. Look at his performance off late. Batsmen have grown accustomed to his bowling. He is a good player and with more training from his Trinidadian counterparts he can regain his position as a great wicket taker. We are all West Indians and would surely love to see everyone perform to their best

It is us….that is the reason.

People take things on face value and run with it and in the end makes us all look stupid.

The man was writing satirically and in the language of the street (like Nabes and I in The Chronicle), as already suggested by previous bloggers.

This, I suspect, is yet another case of the so-called “big islands” thinking they better than us the smaller islands. It is symptomatic of a delutional strain of thinking that crippled the West Indies Federation, that continues to prevent a united CARICOM. I’m not sure if this guy understands that we small-islanders contribute significantly to the Trinidad economy. We purchase significanly more stuff from them than they do from us. We do that out of obligation to the rules of CARICOM, but let’s face it, we can get equal and higher quality goods from ex-CARICOM countries at lesser prices, which suggests that their product may be overpriced, or they charging us more, i.e. they riping us off. In a sense, it’s our allegience to CARICOM that got us in this position. Look at how long we’ve all been calling for CARICOM unity, with little progress on that. It’s been decades. Now look at the small islands of the OECS – in the short lifespan of the OECS, we’ve accomplished more unity amongst ourselves that the wider grouping has done since it’s inception. We need to be independent of these people – do more for us, less for them.

I am also puzzled why Windies selectors not picking Pollard as a test player. This would help him improve his all round abilities as a cricketer and not just a limited over specialist. If Chris Gayle is classed as a test cricketer then why not Pollard?

Your comment makes no sense! Spot on about what exactly?

DNO you doh hearing the article is satire and therefore Fazeer should be held accountable for NONE of the thoughts expressed????

For the record, for everybody singing the satire song..writing a satirical piece does not exempt you from responsibility for the sentiments expressed therein.

Further, satirical writing is written with the purpose of masking true meaning and prompting the reader to think and analyze. So we have analyzed and we are reacting. Therefore, those people who suggest that we should just dismiss it because it is satire are being intellectually arrogant if you ask me…Recognizing that the article is satire alone does not give you a better grasp of it’s content!

Yea…so you know what is satire…so do we. In this case, we choose to interpret from the satire, that Fazeer disrespected Shane. I do not see any such descriptive terms used to describe Permaul, Deonarine and Chanderpaul who are also identified in the piece.

The reaction of the Dominican people is NOT MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING!

I greatly agree. It seems to me that some Dominicans want to show that they are intelligent above others by calling this article ‘satire’. Did the writer of the piece tell them so? Let him defend himself.

This guy’s command of the English language is despicable. It’s hard to think that he is operating as a professional journalist or sports broadcaster with his lack of comprehension of subject/verb agreement, & tenses among other things. At least he was right about three things: Shillingford’s selection nearer to the 2nd test in Dominica (as evidence by the last time around even with a superb performance for which he was inexplicably benched afterwards), the demolishing of the team by WI and not breaking a good side, and finally Dominicans filling the stands(although win, lose or draw we support out own). As for Pelting and the other issues about Caricom e raised, he should simply be quiet for Donkey has no right in Horse race. Caribbean people are resilient and hard working and Trinidad is anti Caricom!

My dear don’t be foolish. He is writing using local lingo. He has placed himself in shoes of the typical Trinidadian. Alas.

Not many pple know of the different language registers and in what context it can be used. just educate them briefly. The language register which was is the informal register. Its fine to use it this context.

This man is just ashamed that Shillingford is a better test bowler than Narine who went to Banglasdesh and took only three wickets for almost 300 runs. Shillingford has proved his worth taking 10 wickets against Australia in 2012, the first time a West Indian spinner since Lance Gibbs took 10 wickets for West indies. Narine will only take wickets in T20 games where batsmen don’t take time to negotiate balls but just swing their bats.
I hope Fazeer does not show up in Windsor Park to commentate because he will not be welcomed.
Go Shane . All Dominicans are proud of you.

While Mr.Mohammed may have been attempting to be sarcastic in his article, he comes off as a typical biased Trinidadian. He should be careful in attacking Shane Shillingford who has proven himself to be a first class bowler and a true inspiration to the Dominican public and in particular our cricket fans.

Careful Fazeer, it’s not always how you say it… sometimes it’s what you say! Dominicans are a proud people and we don’t appreciate bing mocked by our supposed “big island” brethren.

Look at Shane’s record in the Windsor Park and his recent accomplishments in B’dos and tell us he shouldn’t be a regular member of the West Indies team! His stats speak for themselves!

    What a ridiculous interpetation.

if you read CAREFULLY you will see that Fazeer is parodying the typical Trini response to the situation and not making a commentary on it ‘himself’ as a journo.

Its responses like this which make people outside of Dominica wonder if we have any smarty.

    Sacway sot.

that’s how Trinidadian think about the small Caribbean islands they always think they know the best when it comes to cricket ,then again is the West Indies board that have them thinking so because while we the small island suffer to make it on the team weather they perform or not they play
