Work continues on General Post Office building; Sorting Section condition addressed

Wet conditions in the Sorting Section of the General Post Office after recent heavy rainfall

The project to renovate and extend the Public Service Training Centre located on the top floors of the General Post Office Building recommenced on November 19, 2018, after some delays.

The Establishment, Personnel and Training Department states in a release that the contract to undertake this project has been signed between the Government of Dominica and Mr. Tony Claude Andrew of Soufriere and is expected to be done in twenty (29) weeks.

“One of the priorities of the Government of Dominica is to ensure a safe and comfortable working environment for all Public Officers and a secure area to the general public that visit the offices to conduct daily transactions. The flooding of the General Post Office and in particular the Sorting Section served an unfortunate deterrent to accomplishing this priority and severely affected the level of service delivery.” the release said. “To date, this matter has been addressed and Public Officers have resumed daily operations in a dry and safer environment.”

The project scope entails but is not limited to the refurbishment of the General Post Office which includes the re-placement of ceiling tiles and air conditioning units.

“It is envisaged that the improvements will bring much relief to the staff and clients of the General Post Office,” the release adds.

The Establishment, Personnel and Training Department has express sincere gratitude to the management and staff of the General Post Office as well as the general public for their understanding and patience over the past years.

“We look forward to the final project deliverables; namely a state-of-the-art training facility and comfortable office environment for occupants of the building which will engender excellent service delivery,” the Personnel Department said.

I am an employee of the Post Office.

We have been made these promises for many many years and none of it has been fulfilled. CPO, Ministers and PS have all made that same promise to make the condition better. I am glad that the situation has been exposed on DNO so the world will see the condition they are expecting us to work under.

The roof leaks and water enters the electricals and cut off power
The elevator shaft has a pool of water 3 feet deep full of mosquitoes
The drains are blocked and are also full of mosquitoes
The shorting section and many area of the Department is full of rubbish
The sealing is exposed since after post office protested
The environment is so unclean people use it as a toilet daily
The windows are not adequate to allow proper ventilation
The heat in the building is unbearable
All this with an inexperienced Post Master General.

Just more promises and lies. Violating our rights working in an unsafe and unhealthy environment.

All public buildings should be thoroughly inspected for leaks, molds, rodents and insects droppings, paint peeling and other abnormalities. The health of public servants should be of the highest priority. Too many public facilities and infrastructure have been left to fall into a very sad state of disrepair, disrupting crucial services and endangering the lives and health of workers and ordinary citizens. The government’s priorities are upside down. Frequent overseas travels, extravagant concerts and the Red Clinic are given priority over the restoration work to hospitals, health centres, high court building, roads, bridges, post office, etc. Whoever points out these anomalies is subjected to a host of belittling, insulting and dismissive terms from parasitic supporters of the DLP who are just looking for a meal. The interest of the country to these freeloaders is of no importance.

The ETA on this project is 7 months so work should start ASAP. Good news for the post office workers and their customers. NOW, please address the nurses issues. They are the ones taking care of those that can’t afford to get regional and international healthcare.

I wonder what the state of the art hospital is for. I thought it is for better health care services and better working conditions for health care workers including doctors and nurses . I will say no more on this issue.

Above there is a post of Dr Christian being admitted to the PMH ; second time this year. He never complained of conditions, but some people cant wait with a little patience for work to be completed on the state of the art hospital. They have to try their political polarization against the government. Where have dedication for taking care of the sick went ? Where is the work ethics. In some places there are no hospitals or health centers, but health personnel are taking care of the sick in tents. In war torn areas they are risking their lives for the sick. O M G are we regressing into uncivilized existence. Are we advocating a walk out by nurses to let our relatives die in their sick beds so we can point fingers at the government. Only hard hearted haters advocate such actions.

@Joseph John. Your trend of thought seems to be more political, it does not sound philanthropic at all.
We can only compare present Dominica to past Dominica, not to any other country. That’s how unique our island is.
The two main concerns for a parent is to ensure that their child is Healthy and Educated… everything else comes after that, the same principle should be followed as the Govt to the people.
After two decades there should’ve been a State of the art hospital before a State house…. and just to clear the air before you try to make it political, It could’ve been Papi in power he would get the blame because he would’ve been the current Govt.

“In some places there are no hospitals or health centres.” When we want to defend the indefensible we compare our situation with the absolute worst in the world.. Ridiculous! Why not compare ourselves and our country with high standards. Why we have to compare to the lowest standard to make us look superior? Some Dominicans never fail to amuse.

“Only hard hearted haters advocate such actions.” So every Dominican who wants better for their country has hatred in their hearts? We have been promised this state of art hospital as part of the MOU with the People’s Republic of China for how long now? Isn’t it time for us to develop the capability to treat our own at home? What’s in the Kool Aid that Skerrit is feeding the masses. Every higher power take the wheel.
