Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has said that work on the International Airport Project has advanced rapidly over the past months. He made the statement while addressing a press briefing this week.
“Mobilization works advanced in earnest with the arrival of the shipment of construction equipment earlier this year,” he said.
Skerrit said since then, the clearing of the almost 500-acre site and the development of roads have been completed.
Additionally, he said various soil disposal sites are also complete.
“Mobilization is about 99 percent advanced with the completion of accommodation, offices, workshops, storage facilities, utilities, and the concrete mixing plant,” he noted.
Skerrit indicated that the asphalt mixing plant and crusher are currently being worked on.
“We are now entering a phase where you can begin to see focus on runway development with work commencing on the primary runway which will be utilized for both takeoff and landing,” he stated.
Furthermore, Skerrit said a key component of the platform development is the management of the water and waterways on the site.
“To this end, up to over five major culverts have been identified to ensure that this will be done safely,” he said.
Skerrit pointed out also that major design updates requested for the terminal building have been made.
“These updates are in response to feedback received from review sessions conducted with International Air Transport Association and American Airlines,” he noted.
According to Skerrit, the main changes will provide increased capacity as well as flexibility of the apron parking, and changes were also made within the terminal to increase the capacity of the gate sitting area in the departure lounge to improve both the arriving and departing passenger experience.
He went on to state that his government continues to meet with major airlines and keep them updated about the project development as well as the interim development at the Douglas-Charles Airport.
The international airport is said to be among several major projects in the works for Dominica which will have the potential to transform and sustain the country’s economy.
A one-billion-dollar contract between the Government of Dominica and Montreal Management Consultant Establishment (MMCE) was signed on June 9, 2021, at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium, signaling the official commencement of the construction of the highly anticipated international airport.
Meanwhile, Skerrit said in the New Year Dominicans will see continued progress on the Cable Car Project which is rapidly advancing in the Roseau Valley, and commencement of the Cabrits Marina in Portsmouth.

All I can say, Uncle Sam is watching the construction of ‘Dominicas International Airport’ with great enthusiasm, make no mistake! Anybody still remember the Cuban missile crisis? Deja Vu – Russia out, China in. If the Yanks see anything untoward being dug out or constructed in this place, I assure you the next day, the Crime Minister of Dominica will wake up with a few additional craters on this side. Having said that, HE might not wake up at all. The patience of the US government is wearing very thin.
I would use that money to build the dreaded geothermal plant ourselves, rather than wait 25 years hoping it’s handed back to future generations who are now 40 yrs old and will be 75yrs old before handing out back for us to save a penny.

Building an international airport is one, but maintaining and sustaining one is another. Every time that I ask that question, the answer that I get is “build it and they will come “. The only place in the Caribbean Dominica agriculture produce might sell is in Antigua, Barbados, and perhaps St. Kitts Nevis; maybe St. Martin all of the other islands in the Windward islands to Trinidad, and Guyana in South America; Jamaica in the North, produce the same same thing.

What happened to the Douglas-Charkes runway extension? I believe it was scheduled to have been completed by November but I don’t remember any fanfare.
