RayAsta foundation hosts health fair this Saturday to promote awareness about stroke

A Health Fair themed “A Race to Wellness” will be held on Saturday, June 4th, 2022, in Roseau adjacent to All Saints University from 8AM to Noon in partnership with the Primary Health Care Unit and other private sector partners. Medical personnel will be available to speak to persons on matters relating to their health, diet, and emotional wellbeing. Blood pressure checks and diabetes checks will be undertaken. Special aides such as large grip feeding utensils and other special tools for stroke patients will be available for sale in support of the work ahead.

The RayAsta Foundation was established to focus on Stroke Care; rehabilitation services, training, advocacy and education for persons in the community affected by Stroke.

We recognize that earning the trust and respect of the community is dependent on our commitment to these ideals.

Cecilia St Hilaire, CEO of the RayAsta Foundation stated “the statistics of stroke in Dominica is alarming. “There are two (2) stroke patients admitted to the Dominica China Friendship Hospital weekly. This is alarmingly high”. Full recovery outcomes for these patients are limited at best because:

  • The public does not recognize the symptoms of stroke
  • Understand the importance of early detection, diagnosis and treatment
  • Understand the disease and how it affects patients
  • Understand the importance of prevention, care and full recovery
  • Understand the importance of prevention, care and full recovery

Even some medical professionals, believe that there are particular symptoms of a stroke; nevertheless, that’s not always the case. A symptom or “disease” symptom imply a physical or mental feature which is regarded as indicating a condition of disease, particularly such a feature that is apparent to the individual (patient).
Different parts of the brain control different parts of the body, symptoms will depend on the part of brain affected and the extent of damage.

    Some believe:
.Paralysis or numbness or inability to move parts of The face, arm, or leg -particularly on one side of The body
    .Confusion- including trouble with speaking
    .Headache with vomiting
.Trouble seeing in one or both eyes
    .Metallic taste in mouth
    .Difficulty in swallowing
    .Trouble in walking (impaired coordination)
All of the above may or may not constitute a stroke: i.e.; one morning my wife and I were driving talking planing a trip to Louisiana to visit her aunt:

One morning my wife and I were driving talking, planing a trip to Louisiana to visit her aunt, incapacitated by a stroke, while speaking it got to a point where she was suppose to respond with an answer; I got none, I looked over my shoulder, and saw her slumped over, her mouth opened.
I pulled over, and called the paramedics; what I am saying is that 99% of the people who suffered a stroke had absolutely no symptoms. If that was true in every case my orthopedic doctor would not have suffered a parasitic stroke costing him his life.
As a medical doctor he would have recognized some form of a symptom.
In any event, if one notice the speech of a person is slurred, or their mouth is twisting to one side; or the person appears to be disoriented those are common symptoms of a stroke.
People need to visit with a doctor periodically for check-up even if they are not felling sick, in Dominica that is not on the agenda of our people.
An 81 mg aspirin daily helps prevent strokes.

” have suffered a parasitic stroke costing him his life.”

I need to correct the above: I meant suffered a “paralytic ” stroke!

Regarding taking an 81 Mg aspirin per day, which do help to prevent strokes; before one starts the regiment, they should consult with a doctor, because it causes some people especially Black people to bleed internally.

In any event after a stroke, the most likely, most common treatment are blood thinners including Aspirin and physiotherapy.
