Hendrica Smith, Dominica’s representative at the Miss International Elegant Mother’s Pageant (MIEMP), has arrived safely in the neighboring island of St Martin and is all set to represent Dominica at the 6th annual show.
The mother of one who was previously facing the possibility of disqualification from the upcoming competition due to her inability to pay for her airfare and accommodations informed Dominica News Online (DNO) that she was able to secure the necessary funding and make her trip a reality.
The 25-five-year-old Salisbury native is Dominica’s second representative in the event, the first being Dominica’s 2016 Mother’s Queen Erna Edwards who secured the 2nd runner-up position and the award for the best thematic wear at the event.
During a previous interview with DNO, David Williams, the MIEMP’s National Director, highlighted that the goal of the event which debuted in 2016, is to empower, uplift, and recognise mothers through pageantry; but most importantly to “honour and shine a light on mothers for their humanitarian gift from God.” In addition to Dominica’s representative, the other five ladies contending for the throne are Miss Dominican Republic Yissell Florentino, Miss Jamaica Nyisha Martin, Miss Grenada Tricia Grant Lewis, Miss Guyana Alicia Bess Anderson, and Miss St Maarten/St Martin – Diveltah Wilson.
The two-part contest will begin on May 12 with an all-white event in which the ladies will compete in their first and second judged rounds – interview and traditional culture wear. Night two, May 13, will comprise four rounds, including African clothing, Sunday best wear talent, and elegant evening wear, followed by the crowning moment. According to
the organisers, plans are currently being made to have the event streamed online.
The show will be held at the Belair Community Center in Cay Hill in St Martin.
On a serious note, shouldnt the representative of this “international” show be the winner of our last mothers queen? This person would have been groomed by out best, properly sponsored and chaperoned to go out there and use our name. Hendricka just burst out of nowhere and decided she is representing Dominica? Next thing she is out there begging for assistance and making it look like Dominica is so poor they cant even sponsor their rep? What rubbish is this? Stop supporting nonsense. No offence to Hendricka but you dissing the country girl, thats not how its done.
I like dominica
Glenita Daniel also went up for Dominica
That’s a shame cause Dominica could support all kinds of things and not their own . Some one who is willing to represent the country if you could pay for Burna boy why can’t you assist and embrace your own
Just want to wish Miss Smith the best of success in her attempt to bring back the crown to Dominica. Your determination to overcome all odds is awe inspiring.
I agree “1000%” with you. If as a people we were as determined as this young lady, our country would have been much different. We fight the wrong things! Ms. Smith was not deterred by the negativity. As a people we should not be either….let us fight for our country.
