
Tyce “Mighty T” Faustin of St Mary’s Academy has been crowned the 2023 Junior Calypso Monarch.
He outdid 9 other junior calypsonians at a competition held at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium on Friday, to capture that title with a song entitled, “I want to go overseas”.
Mighty T who is 13 years old is the son of Bouyon Artiste, Ambassador Wayne Benjamin.
He told the media following his win that he knew he had the potential to win.
“It’s always so exciting hearing your name being called as a winner of a show,” Mighty T said.
He continued, “My song tonight was basically bringing forward that the education system in America is way better than here and we should probably try our best to bring it forward…”
Mighty T said it doesn’t stop there as he plans to participate in more junior calypso competitions in the future.
Ojahro “Mighty Kai” Philbert of the Dominica Grammar School secured second place, D’ Andre “D Legend” Rolle representing the Pioneer Preparatory School placed third and Jairah “Mighty Jairah” George representing the Roosevelt Douglas Primary School placed fourth.
The other competitors were Amelio “King-Lio” George of the St Mary’s Primary, Jodee-Marie “Luxuriee” Leatham representing the St Martin Secondary School, Bryce “Mighty Bryce” Alexander of the Community High School, Kai “Empress Kai” Lawrence of the St Luke’s Primary School, Terricia “Teri-C” Lavinier of the Pierre Charles Secondary School and Mersa “Mighty M” Andre of the Pierre Charles Secondary School.
Meanwhile, Josiah “DJ Siah” Fagan of St Mary’s Primary School was crowned the first-ever Junior Bouyon Monarch.
His winning song was entitled, “Bring Back the Bouyon”.
“I am feeling excited and I feel good,” he told the media shortly after being crowned. “The song is saying bring back the original bouyon, like the WCK kind of bouyon, stop the cursing, stop the fighting, stop the killing like how these other types of bouyon artistes sing.”
His song was composed by Diane Charles, teacher at SMP.
Dane “Dwavete” John of the Dominica Grammar School placed secnd, De Andre “Dre” Darroux of the Pierre Charles Secondary School placed third, and in fourth place was Quan “Quandary” Bunche representing the Community High School.
The other competitors were Bijon “Mighty B” Charles of St Luke’s Primary School and Curnel “Million Dollar Boy” Charles representing the Goodwill Secondary School.
The show was organized by the Leo Club of Dominica.
