{"id":102996,"date":"2013-09-09T09:58:57","date_gmt":"2013-09-09T13:58:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/?p=102996"},"modified":"2013-09-09T09:58:57","modified_gmt":"2013-09-09T13:58:57","slug":"business-life-effective-leadership-liats-summer-meltdown-ii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/homepage\/columns\/business-life\/business-life-effective-leadership-liats-summer-meltdown-ii\/","title":{"rendered":"BUSINESS AND LIFE: Effective Leadership &#038; LIAT\u2019s Summer Meltdown II"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_83298\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-83298\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-83298\" alt=\"Dr. Valda Henry\" src=\"http:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/valda-henry.jpg\" width=\"160\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/valda-henry.jpg 160w, https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/valda-henry-100x150.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 160px) 100vw, 160px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-83298\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Valda Henry<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This week, we continue our focus on Effective Leadership and LIAT\u2019s Summer Meltdown.\u00a0 The remaining four principles of Peter Drucker\u2019s (2004) effective leadership we will be addressing this week are:<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Take responsibility for communicating<br \/>\n2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Focus on opportunities, not problems<br \/>\n3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Run productive meetings<br \/>\n4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Think and say \u201cWe\u201d, and not \u201cI.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s analyse the LIAT\u2019s situation in context of the remaining four principles:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Take Responsibility for Communicating<\/strong> \u2013 Communication is the oil that keeps the engine of the organisation working.\u00a0 Effective executives ensure that their vision and action plans are well communicated and understood by all in their organisation and key stakeholders.\u00a0 Communication is clearly one of LIAT weak areas.\u00a0 The Chairman has even conceded that LIAT should have communicated much earlier to the public of what LIAT was attempting to do. I daresay, not only the pubic but also very importantly the employees.\u00a0 Workers in Dominica and Barbados staged \u201cwalk-outs\u201d as they did not have sufficient information to relay to customers.\u00a0 On a more regular basis, LIAT is also poor in communicating for they know in advance that a flight will be delayed and say nothing to the travelling public.\u00a0 They sometimes make an announcement, two hours after a flight is delayed and often after customers have made several trips to the agents to ask for information.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Focus on Opportunities, not Problems \u2013<\/strong> Problems have to be taken care of, however problem solving does not produce results.\u00a0 It prevents damage.\u00a0 Exploiting opportunities produces results.\u00a0 In this current \u201cSummer Meltdown\u201d, LIAT focus has to be on the opportunities, the silver lining amidst the storm.\u00a0 What are the opportunities for LIAT?\u00a0 I see the opportunity to build a better relationship with employees and public by communicating better, soliciting ideas and solutions, which engenders buy-in and ownership.\u00a0 I see opportunities for building a more efficient and effective organisation by not just identifying what went wrong and what could have been done differently, but importantly by embracing and implementing change successfully.\u00a0 I see this as an opportunity for a rebirth and renewal by making the needed changes from the board to the executive to the staff and operations.\u00a0 It is an opportune time for an effective overhaul of operations.<br \/>\n.<br \/>\n<strong>3. Make Meetings Productive \u2013<\/strong> Executives are in meetings regularly and sometimes, if not often, these meetings lack purpose or deviate from their stated purpose.\u00a0 Effective executives must make meetings productive; they must ensure meetings are work sessions and not \u201ctalk shops.\u201d\u00a0 The key to running an effective meeting is to decide in advance the type of meeting it will be for different meetings require different forms of preparation and results.\u00a0 Making a meeting productive requires self-discipline to keep to the agenda and to terminate the meeting once the purpose has been achieved and it also requires good follow-up.\u00a0 Good follow up identifies the tasks to be done; the people responsible for accomplishing the tasks; the deadline and reporting on the completed tasks.\u00a0 As I indicated last week, I am not privy to the inside working of LIAT, so I cannot speak to the quality of its meetings and follow through.\u00a0 However, from the outcomes of some of its decision, one can surmise that meetings and follow-ups are not always effective.\u00a0 Mr. Nassief, in his second letter to the LIAT\u2019s Chairman wrote, \u201cAnd despite your promise to reply to my letter \u2018in some detail in the very near future,\u2019 to date you have addressed none of the issues raised.\u201d\u00a0 This speaks to lack of follow-up and failure to communicate, vital practices for effective leadership.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Think and Say \u201cWe\u201d \u2013<\/strong> Don\u2019t think or say \u201cI.\u201d\u00a0 Think and say \u201cWe.\u201d\u00a0 Effective executives know that they have ultimate responsibility, which can be neither shared nor delegated, but they have authority only because they have the trust of the organisation.\u00a0 They think of the needs and the opportunities of the organisation before they think of their own needs and opportunities.\u00a0 Drucker argues that this principle \u201cmay sound easy; it isn\u2019t, but it needs to be strictly observed.\u201d\u00a0 LIAT board and management need to think about LIAT and not themselves. They need to think and do what is in LIAT\u2019s best interest.\u00a0 Do they have the trust of the staff?\u00a0 Do they have the trust of the shareholders? Do they have the trust of the travelling public? Do they have the trust of the stakeholders?\u00a0 If the answer is \u201cno,\u201d then they need to do the honourable thing and as Mr. Nassief opined, \u201cshow true greatness and resign.\u201d\u00a0 If the answer is \u201cyes,\u201d they need to think and put first the travelling public, staff, shareholders and stakeholders, and take and implement decisions that will meet the needs of the customers and fulfill LIAT\u2019s mandate.<\/p>\n<p>Drucker throws in what he calls a bonus and because of its importance, he has elevated it to a rule: \u201cListen First, Speak Last.\u201d\u00a0 Effective executives listen to their constituents and they act.\u00a0 They, in the words of St. Francis of Assisi need to, \u201cPreach\u2026 and if necessary, use words.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Effectiveness is a discipline and like every discipline, effectiveness can be learned and must be earned (Drucker, 2004).<\/p>\n<p>Until we meet again, May God Continue to Keep Us in the Palm of His Hands.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"This week, we continue our focus on Effective Leadership and LIAT\u2019s Summer Meltdown.\u00a0 The remaining four principles of Peter Drucker\u2019s (2004) effective leadership we will be addressing this week are: 1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Take responsibility for communicating 2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Focus on opportunities, not&#8230;","protected":false},"author":16,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_cbd_carousel_blocks":"[]","footnotes":""},"categories":[89],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-102996","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-business-life"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>BUSINESS AND LIFE: Effective Leadership &amp;
