Can brain exercise prevent or delay dementia, such as Alzheimer\u2019s?<\/p>\n<p>To know for sure, more studies are needed. But a number of them show the benefits of staying mentally active.<\/p>\n<p>Mental engagement is consistently linked with a decreased risk of a decline in thinking skills. So games, puzzles, and other types of brain training may help slow memory loss and mental decline.<\/p>\n<p>Many of you have questions about the impact of brain exercises on memory and dementia. Maybe I can provide some answers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0Can brain exercises prevent memory loss or dementia?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>More research still needs to be done. But there seems to be a consistent link between brain training and a decreased risk of mental decline.<\/p>\n<p>Some studies have shown brain training can have long-lasting positive effects. One such study involved 2,802 adults aged 65 and older. Participants attended up to 10 brain training sessions over a five \u2013 to six \u2013 week period. These sessions included training in strategies for:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Memory<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Reasoning<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Speed of processing information<\/p>\n<p>People who took the training showed improvements in those areas that lasted for at least five years. Even better.\u00a0 This translated into improvements in their daily lives, such as the ability to manage money and do housework.<\/p>\n<p>So what about prevention of Alzheimer\u2019s and other dementias? Does brain training help? A study in 2010 looked at this very question.<\/p>\n<p>It found that staying mentally active delayed cognitive (thinking) decline. However, after the onset of Alzheimer\u2019s mental decline accelerated in people who were mentally active.\u00a0 How could this be true? It\u2019s possible that being cognitively active initially bolstered the brain, so symptoms didn\u2019t show up until later in the disease process after it reached a kind of tipping point.<\/p>\n<p>What is the silver lining here? People who are mentally active may spend a shorter part of their lives in a state of decline, even if the develop Alzheimer\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How does brain activity help?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Animal studies have shown that mental stimulation may help protect the brain by:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Decreasing the hallmarks of Alzheimer\u2019s, such as increases in certain proteins (plaques and tangles)<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Supporting new nerve cell growth<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Prompting communication between nerve cells<\/p>\n<p>By keeping your brain active with brain exercises or other engagement, you may help build up a reserve of brain cells and connections. You might even grow new brain cells. This is one explanation for the link between Alzheimer\u2019s and lower levels of education. Experts think that extra stimulation from education may protect the brain by strengthen brain cell connections.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, neither education nor brain exercise provide an insurance policy against Alzheimer\u2019s. But they may help delay the onset of symptoms, prolonging a higher quality of life. And that could be worth a great deal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What kinds of brain exercises should I do?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Researchers know even less about the best types of exercise for your brain. It may well vary from person to person. But the main idea seems to be keeping your brain active and challenged.<\/p>\n<p>Learning something new makes new brain cells grow. You could even try something as simple as occasionally eating with your nondominant hand.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s some brain training you might try:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Learn something new \u2013 a second language or a musical instrument.<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Play board games with your kids or grandkids. Or get your friends together for a weekly game of cards. Mix it up by trying new games. The extra bonus of doing activities like these? Social connections also help your brain.<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Work a crossword, number or other kinds of puzzles.<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Play online memory games or exercises or video games.<\/p>\n<p>Simply surfing the internet may be a great way to \u201cstretch\u201d your brain into new territory.\u00a0 By using MRI scans, researchers have even seen this activity trigger centers of the brain that control decision-making and complex reasoning.
