{"id":105056,"date":"2013-10-14T12:44:06","date_gmt":"2013-10-14T16:44:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/?p=105056"},"modified":"2013-10-14T12:44:06","modified_gmt":"2013-10-14T16:44:06","slug":"business-life-indecision","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/homepage\/columns\/business-life\/business-life-indecision\/","title":{"rendered":"BUSINESS &#038; LIFE: Indecision"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_83298\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-83298\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-83298\" alt=\"Dr. Valda Henry\" src=\"http:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/valda-henry.jpg\" width=\"160\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/valda-henry.jpg 160w, https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/valda-henry-100x150.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 160px) 100vw, 160px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-83298\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Valda Henry<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I hope as you went about your day in the last two weeks, you have given a little thought to your energy management.\u00a0 I have been practicing what I preached and I can tell you, I feel more rested, alert, patient, alive and I am certainly more productive.\u00a0 Yet, I have been thinking from Friday about the topic for this week\u2019s article and while a few ideas surfaced, none held me, so here I am still without a topic.<\/p>\n<p>How can one write an article on no topic?\u00a0 This makes no sense.\u00a0 But as I write this, this brings to mind something.\u00a0 Are there times in our lives when we do not know what to do?\u00a0 Are there times in our lives when we do not understand what is happening to us?\u00a0 Are there times in our lives when we are confused about the meaning of life?\u00a0 It can get to even more mundane things; like what to wear, what to eat, who to visit and where to go.\u00a0 We are undecided.\u00a0 What does indecision tell us? What does it mean?\u00a0 This is the topic for today.<\/p>\n<p>Indecision is a state of flux.\u00a0 The Oxford English dictionary describes it as, \u201cLack of decision; hesitation.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 As Steven Berghas stated, indecision is never about making the correct choices, but rather, about being blocked from action.\u00a0 Whenever we are in a state of indecision, we need to stop and get to the root of it.\u00a0 What makes me indecisive?\u00a0 Why I am not making a decision?\u00a0 What makes me hesitate?\u00a0 The reasons are many and include fear, incomplete information, inadequacy of knowledge &amp; skills, fatigue, anxiety, apathy, fear of offending others, depression, perfectionism.\u00a0 Whatever the cause in order to get beyond our indecision, we need to confront the cause.\u00a0 It is not always easy to get to the cause, for we are sometimes afraid to confront the truth about ourselves.\u00a0 However, it is vitally important that we do so to be able to move on and to get out of our indecisive state.\u00a0 Sometimes, Professor Ian Davidson, my PhD supervisor, once said to me, \u201cYou just have to act.\u00a0 Just begin writing without thinking whether it makes sense or not.\u00a0 Write and afterwards you will edit.\u00a0 You can achieve nothing without action.\u201d\u00a0 So true!<\/p>\n<p>So if you are in a state of indecision, how do you get out of it?\u00a0 How do you begin to act and thereby achieve result?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Steven Berghas in \u201cSeven Ways to Combat Indecision:\u201d<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Forget about always appearing smart \u2013 Sometimes we are so concerned about always being correct and perfect that we are mobilized by that fear and anxiety.\u00a0 We have to know when we have done our best and let it go.\u00a0 We have to stop competing with ourselves and with others and focus on doing our best.\u00a0 In 1991, when I was heading off to study, my friend, Helen Mellow Pascal, gave me a mug with an inscription, \u201cI do my best and leave the rest to God.\u201d\u00a0 I have taken this to heart and continue to live it.<br \/>\n2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Trust your guts \u2013 We have to listen to our inner voice and trust that it\u2019s directing us to the best outcome.\u00a0 How many times do we say or hear other say, \u201cIf only I had listened to my mind,\u201d or \u201cEvery time I go against my mind, I leave to regret it.\u201d\u00a0 That is our inner voice speaking.\u00a0\u00a0 Yes, we have to analyse the facts and figures, weigh the options, however these do not preclude us from listening to that inner voice.\u00a0 Proverbs tell us that our inner voice is better than seven watchmen.<br \/>\n3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Beware the Paradox of Choices \u2013 There are so many choices we do not know which one to choose.\u00a0 We are overwhelmed by the options before us.\u00a0 We then need to eliminate and narrow down our choices.<br \/>\n4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Prioritise your Demands and Fears \u2013 Our indecision is sometimes caused not because we do not know what to do, but we are afraid to act.\u00a0 We are often afraid to act because we don\u2019t want to offend.\u00a0 When we are placed in that situation, we need to ask which is more important\u2026our fear or our need.<br \/>\n5.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Channel Winston Churchill \u2013 Our indecision is sometimes caused, as Marianne Williamson so aptly stated, \u201c\u2026Not that we are inadequate.\u00a0 Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.\u00a0 It is our Light, not our darkness that most frightens us.\u201d\u00a0 We are afraid people will say we are \u201cshow offs\u201d and demand, \u201cWho does she\/he think she\/he is?\u201d\u00a0 I tell you we must never be afraid to let our Light shine.\u00a0 In the words of Winston Churchill, \u201cThe only guide to man is his conscience; the only shield to his memory is the rectitude or sincerity of his actions.\u00a0 It is very imprudent to walk through life without this shield, because we are so often mocked by the failure of our hopes and the upsetting of our calculations; but with this shield, however the fates may play, we march always in the ranks of honour.\u201d\u00a0 In other words, we must always let our conscience be our guide.\u00a0 This is why it is so important that we keep this guide, this inner voice unsullied, and we listen to its wise counsel.<br \/>\n6.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Accept the Limits of Analysis &#8211; This is what is called \u201canalysis paralysis\u201d. So while, it is important to seek advice and to research, we have to know when enough is enough.\u00a0 We have to understand that we must make a choice for by not making a choice we have indeed made a choice!<br \/>\n7.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Flip a Coin &#8211;
