What is a Brazilian wax anyway?<\/p>\n

Bondieu! Are you kidding me! Do that to any animal in the civilized world and you bound to get arrested for cruelty\u2026<\/p>\n

Can we talk calmly and scientifically about body hair, what is natural? What is refined? And what are the medical ramifications, if any, for men and women? Who said we should not shave nor wear antiperspirant? Why is it that a woman parading the beach with a neglected bikini line seems so severely scorned by the sisterhood? And why is it from most guys\u2019 point of view, that\u2019s no big deal. How is it that most hair removal leaves behind amazingly smooth and sensuous skin? And why do others develop bumps and lumps and get down in the dumps.<\/p>\n

Rastas have an advantage. Being all-natural, they don\u2019t waste money on razor blades and shaving creams. If Jah didn\u2019t want us to have it, why would he put it there? Good point! No disrespect, but I wonder if some ever tire of carrying all those long locks around. Does it keep a lot of heat? Does the scalp ever want to free up itself a little bit \u2013 but that\u2019s another story.<\/p>\n

Professionally, I\u2019d prefer no hairs on my chinny chin chin. However, I get shaving bumps so I savour a sabbatical more often than not. As a matter of fact, in the US Army, I had a \u2018profile\u2019 (medical excuse) allowing me to wear a beard. Yet one couldn’t help feeling you were still viewed with a jaundiced eye. It is as if you had not fully submitted that rigid military authority, one which reveres the gladiator oath, \u201cWe who are about to die, salute you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some contend that the skin gets sensitized as an indirect consequence of children mimicking their parents. While little girls are tottering in their moms\u2019 high heels, little boys rummage for their daddy\u2019s discarded razor blades to scrape their chins. \u00a0The prevailing wisdom was: shave the fuzz and the beard will come faster. Since we could not wait to grow up, then I\u2019m guilty as charged.<\/p>\n

The fact of the matter is that this folliculitis barbae thing is very troublesome, especially among men of colour. It is clearly genetic. Men on the Delices side of my family, their faces shave as smooth as a baby\u2019s bottom. On the Senjo side, shaving bumps have resulted in even in life-threating surgery. Which part? The back of the head is where the condition gets most resistant.<\/p>\n

Like acne, products proliferate like benzoyl peroxide, shaving creams and \u2018Bump Patrol etc.\u2019 The list goes on. In my experience, they may work for a few rounds of shaving, then comes the suffering with ugly, painful bumps that takes weeks to clear up. Let\u2019s face it. The shaving bumps business is a good one to go into because sufferers will try these products at least once. No doubt someone will testify to something that really, really worked and literally changed their lives. Pray tell, because inquiring minds want to know.<\/p>\n

The recommendations to minimize shaving bumps are not rocket science. Some suggest that hot, moist washcloth treatment to the area loosens up the pores. Generously apply shaving gel or cream. Do no stretch the skin. Shave in the direction of hair growth using as few strokes as possible. Rinse with cold water and apply moisturizing lotion to the shaved area\u2026and, voila!<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, at some point medical intervention becomes necessary by a doctor with an interest in such concerns. Effective antibiotics, anti-inflammatories and minor procedures may be prescribed. Just the other day, a teenage girl presented to the office with recurrent boils in her armpits. More than the pain, she felt a social outcast, believing the condition to be the result of shaving. When Venus and Serena Williams seized control of the tennis world, armpit hair was not high on their agenda. Gasp! Sophisticated fans felt shock at being hijacked by barbarians. After all, even the few lucky European champions had become civilized (read Americanized) by the time they reached the top. Maria \u2018Sugarova\u2019 is a prime example. The William sisters eventually groomed in accordance with the mainstream culture. But that has not stopped them from still mashing up every opposition. A generation ago, few Dominican women shaved. Today, would it be fair to say that there are few with good jobs who don\u2019t?<\/p>\n

There are always two sides to a story. The year that Elvis died, church members were giving an American missionary a hard time about wearing a sleeveless dress. She sought refuge by asking my opinion, fully expecting a favorable casting vote on the controversy. However, I instinctively ruled with my compatriots, declaring a sleeveless dress to be inappropriate in a worship setting. Why? Because (my words at the time) \u201carmpit hairs could be suggestive and distracting to young men.\u201d<\/p>\n

Way papa!<\/p>\n

Have I come a long way! \u00a0Society is ever changing. The debate never stops. Hair can be one\u2019s glory or the bane of their existence. Suffice it to say, there are few real medical reasons to retain or disdain body hair. It\u2019s whatever floats your boat. By the way, that calypsonian who popularized the expression \u2018hairy like a fairy\u2019 obviously had not seen one. Can\u2019t say I have either. But if truth be told, the very thought of that Brazilian wax still makes me cringe.<\/p>\n
